October Cottage Garden Tour | Gardening Tips, Inspiration and Advice | What to Grow in Mid Autumn

As we enter mid autumn, our cottage garden is still very much a colourful haven. In our main perennial border, this month we are greeted by the flowers of Aster 'Little Carlow' and A. 'Winston Churchill' which are helping to feed the late pollinators along with the bright yellow Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii which has been flowering since September. There is definitely an autumnal feel however now as mid October is approaching.
October can be a mixed month weather-wise but so far we have enjoyed the odd few warm sunny days which hopefully will continue as the month goes on.
We are now beginning to prepare for bringing inside our tender perennials before the frosts come, which for us includes the tender salvias and pelargoniums. We will also be ensuring that any cuttings taken from tender perennials and ones that are not fully hardy such as penstemons, are also stored in a frost free place until the spring.
We will allow the dahlias to catch the frost before we bring them inside for storing over the winter.

Really gorgeous, I can't believe you've still got all that colour in your garden. Love it!

Thanks! We like to grow plants that flower into the autumn as it really lifts our moods as the weather starts to get dismal. Asters are rudbeckia are the stars of autumn!

Thanks so much James, it's still very colourful at the moment and we're making the most of it while it lasts. We had a few nice warm days last week so it was nice to be outside.

Thanks for the tour of your beautiful garden. You've still got loads of colour haven't you? I really like the Cosmos Double Click Cranberries. I've got to grow that next year. I follow a lady on Apple Pea Fernsea channel and she has it in her garden and said the bees have loved it this year. I was like you, thinking the Cosmos would never get going but it's doing so well in my garden now. Everything else is winding down unlike your plants which are looking amazing. Surprised to see that you still have Zinnias. Mine were knocked out by the colder temperatures we've been having so I ripped them out a couple of weeks ago. Although we've had some lovely weather lately my back grass is absolutely water logged, just like it was in the Spring so I don't think it'll get another cut this year. The front garden is a lot better so that had a cut last week. Hope you're both okay. xxx

Still plenty of colour flowing through your garden right now, looks wonderful but frost snaps approaching soon, I've already had a couple of frosts up here. Grasses, I still can't convince my father (78yr) that there is more to grasses than just a lawn 😒 I had a strawberry a few days ago like that, looked ripe until I touched it and tossed it away too! Your passion and enthusiasm for the garden shines through, thank you both of you! Enjoy your weekend and I hope the weather is kind, Richy 😀👍

Thanks Richy, we're enjoying it at every opportunity when the weather is okay. It took a while for me to catch on to the beauty of grasses but I love them now. As you know, stipa tennuissima is my favourite 👍 We've had some cold nights but no frost so far 🤞Thanks for your support Richy, enjoy your weekend 😀

@@MadAboutGardening Thanks. I have multiple Miscanthus sinensis now, 1 x Flamingo, 2 x Ferner Osten and 3 x Kleine Silberspinne. 1 x Stipa tennuissima(many seedling!) 3 x Carex 'Frosted curls', 1 x Uncinia Rubra 'Everflame', 1 x Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' and 1 x Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Black Dragon'/'Niger' which I split into 4 as it had 3 small plantlets in the tub 😁 Frost, not had any yet but had some on my car window, tonight is supposed to be 2C but feels like -2C so I've covered my 4 x 4ft tall Salvias up with an XXL 2.4m x 2m frost protecting zipped jacket tonight after work. Only for 2 nights as it'll be warmer again. I took photo's but not uploaded yet. They're too good to lose this early as loads of blooms. I have no problem supporting the channel as it's my go-to for gardening, suits my yard fine so thank you to you both and enjoy the rest of the weekend, Richy 🌼😀👍 P.S I've just noticed you have over 5K subs now, congratulations! 🍺😀🙌

@martianleaderrichy1520 That's quite a lot of grasses! We love Miscanthus too. You will already know we have the carex Frosted Curls but we also have Imperata Red Baron in the border with Ben's tree. We always overlook it for some reason in the tours but we should mention it as its a great grass. We're not a fan of the Ophiopogon grasses, the ones we've seen always look a bit scappy, but can see the appeal. We had a busy weekend with chores so didn't get out much in the garden. It's quite mild this week here but rain has come today. We are delighted to get to the 5K milestone, thanks 😊. Hope you're having a good week. Let us know when you've uploaded more photos. Take care 😀👍

I planted a rudbeckia last month and the slugs have eaten it 😮

That's a shame, it was touch and go with ours, and we still had to buy some more to make up for what we lost. The variety we grow is usually OK as the leaves are furry but this year has been awful! Better luck next year.

Love Rudbeckia! Yours looks great! I just got Rudbeckia Early Bird Gold to boost my October colour next year. I bought it at Winston Churchill's house (Chartwell) funnily enough. I already have R. Herbstsonne and R. Anthony Waterer!

That's amazing, I bet the visit to Churchill's house was memorable. We have grown R. Herbstonne before but don't know of the others. You can't beat the long lasting sunshine yellow flowers to lift the garden 👍
