Madam Yip Ming Choo, 90 and her daughter Veronica Hah, 69 give new meaning to life long learning with their vocal prowess.
This mother and daughter team has established themselves with their regal cantonese opera performances over the past decades
Veronica who was not literate in Chinese started to learn the art when she was 50. She took on the arduous task by Romanising the script and memorising it.
“My mother helped me with executing clear diction as this is especially pertinent for singing cantonese opera,” says Veronica who welcomed the challenge and went on perform 7 times.
Her first performance was for a charity dinner which she sang with her mother. She received many compliments and this encouraged her to take on more elaborate song scores.
With adrenaline pumped up for learning the art, Veronica also took on the art of making the intricate headgear for the costume.
“I love learning new things and I always look out for opportunities to do that,” she adds.
Madam Yip is sharp and alert for practice and memorise lyrics for songs that are as long as 30 minutes. On Aug 31 she will perform for a fundraising charity for Chung Kwo school in Kuala Lumpur.
