Thank you for your review! Being that the product is so new and there are no demos near me, I was really searching for an honest test especially on tracking. As you mentioned, the rift with sensors is very precise in weapon tracking and overall accuracy, but you did notice a difference in the tracking of the quest. Being that I have tweaked my rift setup with 3 sensors, I would probably get irritated quickly at the downgrade in tracking however slight. Thanks again for the information!!

the quest is the first and only VR headset I have used and I don't think it's a big problem that it's front heavy. I’ve had an oculus rift cv1 since launch and absolutely love it but then I just got my quest yesterday and it absolutely blew my mind! I really don’t see myself using my cv1 very much anymore. I really don’t have any negative things to say about the quest. Sound is great, screen is great, tracking is way way better than I expected, graphics are surprisingly good, ease of use is just unmatched. The only nitpick I have is that it’s slightly less comfortable than my rift.
@vincentjonesvr
@vincentjonesvr 5 лет назад
I haven't gotten a quest yet, but as a social VR user (VRChat almost exclusively), the tracking seems plenty competent. However: specifically for VRChat, there are a lot of limitations on avatars and the likes. Since I use a personal avatar that I made myself, and have for a few years now, that's a huge pain. I'd have to make some major concessions on my polycount, and my avatar isn't actually THAT complicated. Not to mention that none of the people in my group would have supported avatars so I'd just see them all as the default PC user.

What are the visual differences? I wanted the CV1 for sim racing. I had the Dk1 and 2, both were not good enough for it. The quest I have can do it but I can’t hook up to PC for my sim, so it’s meh.

Comments about the vertical sweet spot and comfort are spot on. No matter how I faffed about with the straps the unit ended up slipping down enough to ruin the focus. I also find the face padding quite harsh against my skin after a while. I've found that by wearing a thin sweatband under the headset has helped all the issues a lot! I should caveat that the quest is otherwise fantastic.
@ericblack2252
@ericblack2252 5 лет назад
I agree with the padding being harsh. It’s uncomfortable after 30 mins with head movement. I was planning on taking it back and getting the S, but my family fell in love with the oculus quest so I’m gonna be keeping it. Hopefully the S is more comfortable

I agree with pretty much all of this, although I'm not that fussed about the hand tracking for the style of games I'll be playing on my Quest. However, the lack of cross play titles pissed me off a bit. I kinda understand why developers would charge (especially smaller dev companies) as it does take some time converting and optimizing a game from a powerful platform to one that is not as powerful. Software devs aren't cheap either. I am, however, in agreement with you about paying FULL price. They can at least take 50% off if said user has already purchased it on the Rift. They're not paying devs to create a whole NEW game.

They should have just made this a hydrid system where u can use it in portable mode or change it to tethered mode to a PC. You could have the best of both worlds without having to buy two different vr units! There so much possibility with this technology but of course compromises have to be made with the first few generations to get it out to the general masses even then for most people 400 to 500 dollars is still way to much. Hopefully subsequent generations can drive the price down with more options if only the sales allow that to happen! Hopefully the masses truly adopt this tech!

@SamChaneyProductions
@SamChaneyProductions 5 лет назад
If you haven't heard, Oculus is releasing Oculus Link which will allow you to plug the Quest into a PC and allow you to play Rift titles (and SteamVR) on it. Unfortunately, it uses a single USB C cable rather than the display port + USB cable the Rift S uses, so they had to make a complex workaround that includes compressing every frame of video and decoding it on the Quest its self which introduces latency, artifacts, and generally will make the video lower quality than on a Rift S or other dedicated PC headset. Still, it might be good enough for most.

Sensor tracking + wireless HMD will be the more likely immediate future. Being tethered to a certain area wasnt a problem when we sat in front of our monitors and it isnt now, being tethered is only a problem for the HMD itself. A dedicated room with sensor tracking will always (or at least for the time being) be superior to inside out tracking if you want the best possible experience. Inside out is only the future if youre talking about casual VR.

You're wrong about the tracking. I have the Rift S and the tracking is SO much better than CV1. you are the only person that I ever seen complaining about sweetspot... everyone says that it has by far the best sweetspot of any headset ever, same goes for go and rift S that uses the same lenses. StarVR and xtal are the only exceptions, but those cost 4000 dollars. Also they say that the hand tracking is more accurate and precise than any hand tracking to date... the only problem being the two blind spots, which are holding it up close to your face and behind your back. So you give people wrong ideas. It has actually even being measured by software, and it's more accurate than on the rift and much more accurate than on the vive.
@GamerMuscleVideos
@GamerMuscleVideos 5 лет назад
Maybe they don't have very good aim because though the tracking is good it's not as good as the Vive with the quest having way more smoothing on the hand movements. Also the horizontal sweet spot is bug but the vertical sweet spot is still very small when it comes to getting maximum clarity and not that different from the rift.

I have PC VR (Vive / Rift ), but am limited on space now. Since I picked up the Quest, I am perfectly happy switching to only using the Quest. The portability, playing outside 300sqft (cloudy/nightime) and in any room is a better trade off than the slightly - and I mean slightly better tracking than PC VR and the better graphics. The immersion to me is higher in the Quest than tethered VR.

You wish the Quest had the same screen the Oculus GO has? Why? The screen is one thing everybody loves about the Quest and one reason many people (including me) wont upgrade from Rift to Rift S, the Rift S screen doesn't even have hardware IPD adjustment. The Rift S screen is also lower resolution than the Quest screen. Other reasons to not upgrade for me are: lower refresh(90hz vs 80hz), worse sound solution, worse tracking (i have 3 sensors for my CV1), (imo) worse controllers Dont get me wrong. The Rift S is a good HMD with a good price, i just like the CV1 more. Could be because i am a little nearsighted and play without glasses so SDE is not really a factor for me since i pretty much cant see it anyway.

This headset seems like about as close to a perfect balance between the full room-scale PC VR experiences and the convenient portable solutions like GearVR and Daydream. Even with the downsides you mentioned, I think I'll really like this headset. The only real issue for me will probably be keeping the headset properly in place on my head to keep that sweet spot. Definitely gonna try it at a Best Buy before buying it. Thanks for the solid review.

I really don't find any of your negatives to be an issue for me at all. I actually like the new foam better than the harder cv1 neoprene although sweat proof leather would be more ideal. The nice thing is it is far easier to detatch and blot out and then just spray and blot with some rubbing alcohol. I like the open audio as it sounds pretty spacial plus gives the simple OPTION to use the headphone jacks. It's far easier and more fun to share with others around so they can actually hear what's going on if you're not streaming to a screen rather than just moving around looking goofy which is still part of the fun anyway. If this Rift Cat thing really pans out for my PC titles I will probably just ditch my CV1. I can't believe how great this new device really turned out to be. This is the best excertainment VR device made yet. So on that note the cost justification is half for gaming fun and half for the fitness stuff like Box VR considering how much can be spent on a boring tread mill or other exercise gear this thing is a no brainer. Your initial pros were spot on so nice review although I would just hate to see people latch on to your negatives as the takeaway. I have been playing with VR since DK1 and this thing is legit if you want wireless freedom VR fun and don't care about photo realism gaming but want to run around in awesome cartoon worlds at scale.

I really want to want the quest, but the headstrap thing really kills it for me. The design and fit of the Rift S is basically perfect, so I don't know why they didn't use the same design for the Quest (cost savings I'm guessing). Also, Oculus link will allow people to plug into a PC to play Rift titles, but since the video is compressed then decoded on the Quest it will have more latency and artifacts than the Rift S, so I'm worried it would still be a sub-par experience. If it had the same halo head band from the Rift S and had a detachable tether just like the one on a Rift S it would be a no-brainer.

Personallly, changing from OLED to LCD is a terrible decision. It's 80fps as opposed to 90fps on CV1 and losing the ability to render the colour black is a pretty big quality drop. Aside from cost it's mostly negatives
@bluepill8077
@bluepill8077 5 лет назад
They say the LCD can render far more sub pixels than OLED. I'm not an expert on the subject, but that may be a good reason to switch it up.
@GamerMuscleVideos
@GamerMuscleVideos 5 лет назад
The quest uses oled the rift a uses LCD , LCD has better perceivable Rez sue to pixel layout + faster pixel switching and higher frame rates at a.comprmise to contrast. I think led is probably a good choice to be honest have to test things out properly to know for sure.

First of all, thank you very much for your honesty. I have been following lots of people who have tried it before release, and only very few commented on the vertical sweet spot issue and none about the hand tracking and the judder. In Fact, they complimented the hand tracking and claimed it was perfect except for when it's completely blind spot at the back or when touching the headset right in the middle. But as I am a completely newbie to the VR world and this was my first VR headset, I can tell you that I did have tracking issues from time to time and I have only used it 3 time so far. I had this issue from the start when my hands are next to my hips or resting on my knees while I'm setting and sometimes even when my hands are in front of me. But truth to be told yes it rarely happened and for the most part it was good. Though, need more testing.

What I’m about to say may be an unpopular opinion on this but as impressive as this device is, I was expecting more and I’ll elaborate as to why. The library of games being the reason. People seem to be treating this like it’s the first headset that’s completely wireless and they’re in awe of it and I don’t blame them because this has been marketed heavily making people believe that this really is the true first wireless headset but what they don’t realise is the oculus go came before this a year or 2 ago which WASN”T marketed as heavily and went under the radar which you can still buy for a cheaper price than the quest at about £250. Not to mention you can get the majority of the amount of games that’s currently accessible on the quest store and MORE for cheaper prices again on the oculus go store! For example on the quest store there’s many games over £10 whereas the same games and the same titles are on the oculus go store and they average around £2.99 maybe £7.99 at a push for some. For anybody who’s new to wireless VR that doesn’t already own an oculus go I wouldn’t blame you for getting a quest and to be honest I would recommend it but as somebody who already has an oculus go, for me to pay £399 at the minimum for a device that may have about 7 titles exclusive to it (such as Vader immortal, Robo Recall and superhot) which you can’t get on the go because they’re slightly more high end quality and for the 6DOF aspect it just isn’t worth it. The library of games I’m appalled and disappointed with to see so many repeat titles you can already get on the oculus go for a more expensive price I’m a little lost for words. The only way I would upgrade is if they were to release more high end exclusive titles to the quest, enough for me to want to go out and buy it to make it feel like a true upgrade to the oculus go I already have.

The screen of the Rift S is nothing like the Quest screen. Its an LCD screen (not OLED) has a higher refresh rate and lower resolution. Its actually the same screen the Oculus Go has. Another thing, what do think about the Rift S tracking compared to the original Rift? Does it have the same problems this interview mentions on the Quest? The tracking cameras on the Rift S seem to be placed better and it has one more, so i'd think it should be better - but is it?
@ParadiseDecay

@@bobbyb6053 Well the Rift S looks bloody amazing, I can't play on my CV1 anymore. Tracking on Rift S has been perfect, I played Beat Saber for 2 hours on Expert and not 1 issues. Not anymore with Rift S. :) Replaying all my favorite VR games again feels like I have a new PC.

You really need the top strap adjusted so it rest low enough on the back of your head. I agree with the vertical sweet spot it makes a huge difference in picture quality and its hard to get right. Hopefully with future software updates 2 of the three issues you mentioned will be fixed. Really enjoyed your video a very fair assessment of what I have experienced as well. The audio is fine for being built in but you should be able to make it 25% louder.

The tracking is better than PSVR but not as good as VIVE or Rift CV1 - It works really well for the most part but its not "perfect" Plugging headphones in is great but it would be better if out the box it had something more like CV1 which sounded really nice and was super comfortable.

Very interesting hearing that you weren't happy with the facial interface and comfort, every other review I've heard said that it was actually better than the original Rift. huh. Must be because of head shape.
@GamerMuscleVideos
@GamerMuscleVideos 5 лет назад
The interface feels nicer and blocks more light than the old ones, but the headset, on the whole, feels worse to ware mostly due to the head strap design and the extra weight and the fact the facial interface has the front of the HMD further away from eyes.

Nice summery- it is pretty much what I thought it would be. Having had VR myself since the DK1, going through the DK2 and owning a CV1 from release; I'm going to wait at least 6 months before I purchase one as I have learned to wait for minor issues to be ironed out. I agree that it is mind boggling that there is now a fully standalone untethered complete VR headset less than half the price of the CV1s initial price. Next you need to review Quest using Riftcat and SteamVR.
