You do should learn Kata=1sided/edge & ka=blade & so any 1sided sword like a Dao, Talwar, sabre, cutlass, falchion etcetera is a katana. Nihontou katana would at least imply a traditional Japanese single edged sword. Another thing most are not a aware is a Katana is compound word for from kata=1 edge/1side implying a single edge & na=Blade as in any blade. Katana meqns any single edged blade & so a chinse Dao is a Katana, so are sabres from Eurasia, Talwar from India, falchions from Europe etcetera. Information I have saved from prior writings as it got tedious as follows: A shaku=11.9 inches roughly & this old Japanese measurement before the Meiji restoration is what ever thing including nihontou=traditional Japanese bladed weapons that is every bladed weapon so Yari or naginata to name a few besides swords. A blade length under 1 shaku to 1/2 a shaku is a Tantou that are are either large daggers or very short swords depending on perception. From 2 to 1 shaku you have 2 types of sword being the wakaazashi & Kodachi which differ in construction because of how they are mounted worn. Wakazahi's sheath is smooth with no added obstruction for the stuba/guard was none or very small so the sheathed blade to be slipped out of the period clothing like sash or obi for instance while kodachi is worn slung from a cord in the same manner as a tachi. A tachi is the same as a kodachi but is 2 to 3 shaku long. An Odachi is 3+ shaku though only on rare occasion did they reach 5 shaku. O & wo is a particle that act as an object marker so an object of important or presence/concern though it can be used for any object as long as something makes it notable with this case being the size. What most in the west universally call a Katana is from the later potion Senguku jidae in the 15th century but mainly used post sengoku is the Uchigatana which came from a specific sort of tantou called a sasuga. Uchi=company & home as Japanese business always tried to imply both are the same due to their work mentality. Gatana=dull-edged sword'; Gatana from katana rendaku upon with comedic connotation (jidaigeki= a specific Theatric genre) for a dimwit as a self-appointed samurai. Uchigatana basically implies the home society/organization of dimwits playing as samurai/retainers. Uchigatana are 2 to 3 shaku in length as well. You don't try to avoid paying the British crown what you owed as it never ends well the indebted! The Japanese found self-appointed samurai annoying in their own land let alone foreigners that do so! Actually, I think a Samurai's main weapon (Much like with Knights) was mostly determined by the samurai themselves. Some excelled/preferred the Yumi (Bow), others the Yari (Spear) and even some would use the Kanabo (Yes, that giant bat was a weapon of war. lol) As for the Odachi and Notachi well, they weren't given the nickname "Horse Killers" for nothing.

I saw a special about the comparison of longbow vs. Yumi and they looked about comparable but the draw is different as well as where you put the arrow.

The tachi was the mounting for cavalry sword use. The uchigatana was the mounting preferred for infantry sword use.

Sure the iron sand used by the Japanese were often heavy with impurities(something true to a somewhat lesser extent in Europe as well until the invention of the blast furnace), but after a lengthy period of time the steel was rid of a great deal of the impurities and you’d have a sword made of steel with similarities in content to swords in medieval Europe and other places.

Naturally, yes... A blade of any sword can only be so long before you have to increase the length of the handle/pummel half hand. Otherwise, it will become unwieldy. The benefit of the claymore, unlike the Odiachi, weight wise... Is the cross guard, if we're being traditional about it. The cross guard + pummel can counter balance the blade's weight much better the Odachi. Giving the Claymore better momentum for heavy swings if needed. The Odachi is sharp but comparatively. It doesn't hit as hard.

@@nothim7321 Center of Gravity... You would know this by just holding the Odachi and the Claymore. The Odachi is sharp but it doesn't have the momentum strength compared to the Claymore against Full Plate Armor. And depending on the Claymore Model designs, it can hit harder than an Odachi. You cannot alter an Odachi too much, beyond its cross guard, handle, and Pummel/lack there of. But you can alter every aspect of the Claymore. Even if both swords were made from spring steel. Case in point... Both the Odachi and the Claymore can weigh 4 lb. But the curvature of the Odachi and the center mass being near the cross guard with a proper long handed handle, makes the Odachi hit less harder than a Claymore. While a Claymore is often times, more top heavy above or on the False Handle. Giving it more bite/blunt damage Vs Armor if it does connect. The center of gravity for a melee weapon and the total momentum efficiency is key to how hard a weapon will hit, regardless if it has a blade or lack there of. Sharpness is only useful if you can cut through the material of Full Plate Armor. Which is, extremely rare for these types of swords. Excluding horses.

You don't, if you can avoid it, want to hit armor with either of these. Neither are actually anti-armor weapons. Neither would be all that more useful against armor than a similarly sized and weighted stick. Why can you alter one and not the other? It's literally not the case. It's a massive debate as to whether they were used against horses at all. Nothing you've said is based in fact. It seems to be anime tropes and fantasies.

@@absolstoryoffiction6615 The claymore does not hit harder than the odachi, what the claymore's pommel generates is that its center of mass is lower, making it more maneuverable. However, I would say that the weight of the odachi that is further forward on the blade contributes to the momentum of the sweep. There is another sword called nodachi that has a huge handle that takes up half the length of the sword, which is much more maneuverable, like the claymore.

You're not wrong. Without the extra handle length it seems more an O'Katana to me. An O'dachi is roughly two thirds blade to one third handle. Metatron has one that's 1.76m or so. In saying that, the guide for O'dachi is 3 shaku 3 sun (90cm or 3 feet) is the shortest length (blade only) to qualify as one. Tyranth is correct on the weight being strange though because of the curve.

God dammit, they kept that piece of crap instead of getting a better one... Sorry. You're 100% correct, and to get a feel for what this would be like to handle just grab a sword-ish length stick. Swing it where it feel comfortable to swing. Now, put your hand lower on the stick (Towards the pommel/not whacky end). Now try swinging it a few times. It's slower and harder to control. You may feel like you get more power, but with swords raw physical power isn't important compared to things like edge alignment (Or structure). A heavy swing without edge alignment is significantly less dangerous than a light swing with good edge alignment. Since control gives better edge alignment, the extra length on the handle would give it more accuracy and thereby "power" So basically, what they have is a slow clunky piece of sh-... I mean, I would really like to see these guys get a legit Odachi and actually experience and enjoy what that sword archetype should be.

Leverage. A longer handle gives you more leverage.

They're easy to use in one hand, can be thrown, and are often readily available in urban environments should you ever find yourself caught in a skirmish. And Odachi or Nodachi, as they are the same, would be (>90cm). The minimum blade length to classify one is 90cm, or 3 shaku.
