I've seen all the reports y'all have about aid delivery interference and have heard several that have been communicated to me privately (discussed in video) within the last 24 hours.

Here in NC, there were multiple government people telling us to not send supplies, dont volunteer. If you want to donate money or supplies give it to us. I was stopped by the National Guard who refused to let me pass with a truckload of aid items, even though I have family and friends in that area. I finally gave in and unloaded my truck of all the items and drove back to Copperhill TN. This is happening to everyone, I understand their point, but locals are best equipped to render aid initially as the government has to figure out the area and they are swamped in red tape making their efforts pretty much useless from what I have witnessed. FEMA has always been a joke and as a retired Emergency clinician I have dealt with them too many times to count....

Don't blame the USPS! They have no recourse but to hold people's mail at the Post Office if there is no possible access to their customers, and that's if there are postal facilities still standing. You have NO idea how much mail can accumulate in the local Post Offices during a disaster. Carriers do their utmost to deliver the mail, regardless of anyone's personal opinion. They DON'T send the "junk" mail, they just deliver it! Additionally, they have no say whatsoever in where voting does or doesn't take place. That's a function of local government.

It was the same thing during Harvey I took loads of supplies to Sillsbee and Vidor the red cross and fema were in Houston and a couple places on I10 for the cameras the small towns weren't getting a damn thing everything they were getting was donated

Mike, this was developed at least partially after Hurricane Katrina. After riding it out here in Biloxi, MS, I was the beneficiary of family members who were able to drive in with a generator, window A/Cs, gasoline, and supplies. They also brought huge diesel tanks on a trailer to fuel generators at local hospitals. A veterinarian colleague of mine came from north MS with supplies for a makeshift acute care clinic. We were later informed that "the government" had developed new protocols and in the future would be blocking access to similar disaster sites. Their cover story was that they wanted to keep people from just piling into disaster areas "for their own safety," but it's really just about control. We do need help from large government entities in cases like this, but once again the private sector is proving that people with good hearts can get things done faster. Ronald Reagan got it right when he said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help."

There is a guy they threatened to leave or be arrested. The guy was flying a helicopter and was flying in water and food a flying people out. The fire chief told him he was interfering and was going to be arrested. The guy had left his son on one of the mountains so he could fly some people out. The cheif told him if he flew back up there to pick up his son he would be arrested. The guy sain fu and went and picked up his son and had to eave an old man there as his wife was already flown down.

I'm just going to say - I've deployed with certain well-known disaster response orgs to natural disasters around the world and I have heard many of the same things unofficially, of course, from the advance / recon team that is on the ground in WNC now. They've been there for a couple days and have experienced this "friction" - even as a couple of the team members literally LIVE in the affected areas. There's whole swaths between Boone, Black Mountain, and Asheville, that are barely getting assistance at this point as resources are focused on populated areas. PLEASE do document this - it needs to be shared far and wide!

I watched a video yesterday where a guy with his own private helicopter flew in and tried to rescue folks. He was initially told he was all good, that is, until local fire chief showed up and told him to leave or he'd be arrested. So he left. I hope these folks who are affected by this storm are able to vote next month. Don't think for a moment that the current party in the White House won't try to take advantage of these folks and their situation.

I live in East Tenn about 20 minutes from Erwin and if I were the government I would highly advise against getting in these peoples way (trying to get food, water, supplies to people in need) It will not end well. The governments response to this was very slow and people have taken up responsibilities with not 1 single complaint. Guys in the mountains are already building roads/clearing roads, make shift bridges, etc.

Remember during Katrina, volunteers were held up in a biiiig traffic jam north of New Orleans for days. A lot of the rescuers needed rescuing because they ran out of fuel. They were threatened with arrest, despite being sent by their respective state governments in response to a request for aid by local NOLA-area officials.

I just took a box truck full of aid to Western NC and had no issues whatsoever. No problems from pickup in Tennessee and no problems on delivery. They did tell me they are having an issue with looting, but it is out of area people who come with trailers. When they ask what they are doing they say just looking around and they refuse to leave. Other than that I’ve seen a lot of good people working hard to help others.

Filming in public is a constitutionally protected activity. As is filming government agents in the course of their duties. There is no expectation of privacy in public. You don't need anyones permission, it doesn't matter what state you're in.

You have to understand. The government would be held liable if anything were to happen to the resuees or the rescuer. I think its great that avg people wanna help. I really do, but if there was an accident I.e. the helo crashed and killed the people he tried to rescue or somehow had a mid air crash with another helo or crashed and instead of 2 people to rescue now there's 3 or 4. It just got worse. Its more of a liability issue than anything. For example, my cop friend even off duty but still carrying. If he witnesses anything going on.. They are told to just call it in on radio or 911. Better to let uniform officers deal with it. Unless its imminent. There was a vid where a citizen helped the cop cause she was getting handled by the sus. Citizen got injured . iirc bruises, cuts and I think a broken wrist. Ended up suing the state and won. Granted the dept. Shouldve covered medical costs cause it was possible the cop would've gotten killed. But there was no guarantee that wouldve happened either..

This had its origins in hurricane Katrina back in 2006. Private organizations descended upon the area *after* FEMA was slow to provide aid to residents. The papers, e.g., Wall Street Journal, picked up on this-this being the fact that such organizations were providing relief faster than the FEMA Behemoth! My suspicion is that FEMA has decided to never again be embarrassed as they were then. Best way to do such is to deture these “private” efforts in any way possible. Don’t be fooled. FEMA has only the good of FEMA in mind.

I moved to TN 3 years ago. I showed up near Jonesborough to help with the clean up. During a break some guy found out I wasn't born in TN so he knocked me on my ass and said" We don't need your kind around here" I picked myself and my chain saw up and walked the 3 miles back to my car.

The gov overreach in that area is staggering. To keep mountain bikers/hikers from using trails the Federal and State Park agencies just shut down the public gravel roads leading to the trails. They boast about it knowing they can't be challenged legally due to the average mountain biker/hiker not having tons of cash to oppose them in court.

Then what? You’re not going to be able to continue providing aid if things escalate anyway. Find a way around or move on. Record and report anyone who stops aid from going through. Escalation isn’t going to help any.
