Thank you, Rockbox was amazing. Similarly to mitxela, I scored one of the old monochrome iPods way back in a pawn shop, with an 80 gig hard drive. The hardware was absolutely amazing, that scroll wheel thing, so good. However on the software side it was barely useable with all that iTunes crap. Until I discovered Rockbox which made the player very very nice.

@@TheShadowArtCom I held onto an old ipod waiting for rockbox to actually be patched to support it for a long time and just FINALLY got it up because I had an older ipod that broke that I put it on and yeah I'm here because I don't use a macbook I use Windows or Gentoo Linux, I use BOTH operating systems as I run a network with multiple computers I own out of my family of origin's home and yeah It just sat collecting dust since 2012 and I finally decided to try to flash again and loe and behold it works. Now i'm thinking about tearing out its guts and putting an iflash in it with a microsd 1tb from sandiskand a 3800 mah battery to really give it a boost of battery life. 8 and 1/3rd days off a single charge. I'm even thinking about modding a few and throwing them up on Ebay with rockbox premodded into them or onto Etsy the same wa Itunes is insufferable. it just collected dust because i outright refused to use it for any length of time.

That was some really great animation! I remember having ROCKbox on a USB Stick MP3 player back in the day because I wanted to listen to ( what I only recently found out was a bootleg pre-retail version of ) Alive2007 by Daft Punk, and the MP3 player couldn't do gapless, or MP3s larger than 128kbps, but ROCKbox could play any file I wanted, in any way I wanted. And could even change the brightness of the backlit through PWM, something the original firmware lacked. Sadly the MP3 player died when my Nokia phone stored in the same pocket won in a battle upon me tumbling to the ground nearly avoiding a car that was not where it ought to be. I never did have another journey with it, but perhaps I should.

I use my Sansa Clip Zip with Rockbox on an almost daily basis, mostly for podcasts. Powering down then resuming later takes seconds, and doesn't require looking at the screen, making it ideal for starting a podcast in the car, continuing later on headphones, then plugging into a speaker to listen to a bit more. The device fits easily in a pocket, with no concerns of a big touchscreen to scratch or break. The only thing missing, for me, is Bluetooth (for easier connection to the car audio system or wireless headphones). If someone produced an MP3 player with a similar form factor (and price), Bluetooth built in, and able to run Rockbox, I wouldn't be able to get my wallet out quickly enough.

I was sorta late to MP3 players, only because of financial limitations, and my first was a cheap ipod shuffle clone in 2011. In 2012 I bought a Sansa Clip Zip with money I scrounged up selling garbage finds on eBay and I found Rockbox. I listened to so much music and played so many games on a device that only set me back $20, and I used it till 2014 when I finally could get enough money for a cheap Android device. Best MP3 player ever.
@Scrogan
@Scrogan 3 года назад
The Sansa Clip might be the best cost-optimised good little MP3 player out there, but there’s been a resurgence of new designs. Under the name PMP or “portable media player”, these new devices have some modern features to their name. Like Bluetooth, high-end DACs, or even supporting external DACs, or being able to be used as external DACs to a computer. Rockbox is the preferred firmware for many of these too. Of course, the niche market of them means they’re not too cheap at all. The screens are also a bit more modern, so you might have a better time playing doom on them.

that, and today electrical engineers learn to code. At least here in Germany, many, if not most electrical engineering jobs are about software development, (or VHDL coding, which is very similar to software development).

@@TheRailroad99 in my undergrad, for the first 2 years and the first half of the third, electrical and computer engineers shared almost their entire course load, so I totally see that, but there's also a fundamental difference between hardware description like VHDL and writing embedded software to run on a system
@TheRailroad99
@TheRailroad99 3 года назад
@@LynnK2000 yes there is! I just wrote that for people who dont know what hardware description languages are, because many software developers don't know about them. still using this combo almost daily.. you can have many microSD cards and swap them, which you can't on a phone. It has a versatile prarmetric EQ to pull headphones / IEMs flat (and you can save and load your presets!), also adjustable crosstalk. The cyan OLED display to me looks really cool and it's possible to replace the lipo battery (I did). Menu system is structued very logically, you can set shortcuts to often-accessed settings and the UI is very responsive / instantaneous. And there is no need for a "database" and scanning, just organize your music well in folders on the microSD and use it. Only the DAC inside the SOC sounds a bit mushy and the amp doesn't have that much juice for making high-impedance headphones shine. Also, my 3.5mm jack seems to get flakey now. I wish rockbox would be ported to modern DAPs, they may have nice UI but most don't offer as many truly useful features.

Sometimes we forget that it doesn't need a gigahertz to run great software. I am an electrical engineer, and I absolutely hate the attitude some software engineers (especially web developers) have towards software. Most modern software is absolutely bloated and 80% useless overhead. It is astonishing what a simple MCU can achieve, if you know how to code efficiently. I would highly recommend to any "high level" developer to start writing a few assembler (or maybe embedded C) programms, just so you can see that great software can be built for literally everything.

Hi @mitxela, I "caused" Rockbox, being the original firmware developer for the Archos Jukebox 6000. apparently the firmware I wrote was so bad around playlist handling and our CEO unwilling to open source the code so that the boys and girls wrote their own. at times it was one of the rather large open source SW projects in terms of users, developers, testers, translators, doc writers. I'm kinda proud to have caused that :) AMA
