December 2022 is the 30th anniversary of the MiniDisc's release in North America (it was November for Japan). Similar to my Ode to the Compact Disc - 40th Anniversary video released in April 2022, I take some time to talk about the MiniDisc as a format and my history with it, going back to 1992.
I do not touch on MD LP, HiMD, DataMD or even the loan MiniDisc video camera released by Sony. This video is purely about the compressed ATRAC audio format that is the original MiniDisc

I still use my MiniDiscs and I understand where you're coming from in listening to your Bluetooth and streaming music but, physical media adds that extra sensory element, the feel of the disc in your hand, the look of the discs and, on pre-recorded stuff, the artwork.
@roxics
@roxics Год назад
It does. I have vinyl records and CDs (DVDs, Blu-rays, etc) for that same reason. It's fun every so often to dive into the physical experience of these formats. I tend to drift in and out of periods of time where I get excited about this stuff and want to mess with it all and then other moments where I realize it's just not as convenient for me anymore. But there is no reason we can't have both. In fact in some ways it's the luxury of having easy to use digital streaming stuff that makes having physical stuff a fun escape. I'm not sure vinyl would have made the comeback it did if people were still stuck with only physical media. I think the luxury of having digital streaming at your finger tips mades owning vinyl records and CD sand Minidisc something novel and unique and fun. Now they are a choice to use rather than a necessity to get the content you want.

I don't use as many physical meduas you but I i do when I can. I've had USB drives that fail & many instances where Internet was down, making it unable to stream. Not ass songs I listen to are available on my tiny physical media collection so I stream those. I also love not having to switch on my tv, connect to a site, search whatever song and keep making lists to listen to in the background while I do things. I love popping in whatever media, hitting play and doing my things. Not to mention how very reliable most media are

Great video! I was all in Sony MD back in 1993. I used my income tax refund to buy a Sony stereo deck unit & a portable player bundle. I loved the portable unit as it had a AM/FM radio in it as well. I used to listen to the local morning show back then. What really sold me was real digital recording from CD's that I went in big time in 1985. I was an early adopter of the digital formats. Being a 16yo teenager in 1985, I worked at my local grocery store for 2yrs after school to pay for my $1500 stereo system that came with a CD player. My parents bought me that stereo system & I made double payments weekly to pay it off! lol Both my Sony MD stereo unit & portable still work to this day. I literally have just over 300 mixed MD's I made. I got back into the medium a few years back & love watching MD videos. Thanks again & much appreciated.

You are one of the few and rare people who have hit the nail on the head with this format, in the sense that it was the perfect replacement for the mixtape. Minidisc was perfect for making your own compilations and I can understand why people still enjoy going back to them in the way that you experienced. I still have a number of home decks and portables which are Hi-MD, and they are still used and I enjoy the ritual of recording onto them myself. Here's a crazy thought for you: Of all this Sony digital formats that they introduce after CD, Minidisc was the longest running of all of them. Outlasting DAT and SACD format (in its original standalone/dedicated form). And we don't even need to mention that Philips format DCC! I still say if Sony had brought out an anniversary home deck that was a Hi- MD, It would sell out!

Personally I would love to see a new portable player that incorporated some new technology. Such as a removable Li-Ion battery, USB-C charging, Bluetooth headphone/mic support, and also a clear lid to be able to see the top of the disc. Along with maybe a lineup of some nice artsy blank discs. Being HiMD would be awesome as well. I've never owned one of those. All of my units are the original MD format.
@IncognitoChild
@IncognitoChild 7 месяцев назад
@@roxics sadly Hi-MD was Sony's last roll of the dice. Sadly because it should have been the product that brought audiopiles to the format. It really had all the bangs and whistles and the most important feature of all: PCM recording. Even today there is something quite satisfying with manually recording music onto minidisc, whether it be from tape, vinyl, radio, or wherever. I loved "time machine" and the ability to edit to within one 80th of a second - It made remixing songs very, very, easy.
@IncognitoChild
@IncognitoChild 7 месяцев назад
@@roxics the Hi-MD portables had lithium ion batteries although they are now the machines to avoid because the lithium ion batteries are harder to source replacements for than the original gum stick batteries, so you have to be careful what you wish for. Bluetooth connectivity for headphones sounds interesting but again adds cost and kills battery life. Every single Sony portable recorder I had had good provision from hardwired microphones with the ability to attenuate the levels. Or are you talking about wireless microphones (something I certainly know nothing about) 😭

I still have 2 minidisc players and a minidisc full sized deck. I never bought prerecorded minidiscs (and I never bought prerecorded cassette tapes either). I even had a minidisc player in my car. I was all in on the format and loved it. Recording at double speed from CDs was a revelation- gone was the the tedious task of real time recording that took endless hours to compile a "mix disc". I still play them every now and then. Unfortunately cassettes and CDs had cornered the market and cassettes were a cheaper alternative. Mini disc was a fantastic portable medium but of course MP3 files and the iconic I-pod blew all competition aside in 2001

Yeah I really wish the prices of MD had been cheaper in the early 90s when it came out. I think it would have taken off more. It was the perfect little format for the time. Even if just for making mix discs or doing your own recordings, which is also how I used it. Plus the fact that my discs from 1999 still play back in 2023 is a testament to the tech. I wish I had recorded my iTunes playlists from 2003-2009 on MD, I would still have them today.

Do you mind helping me out with something that has been a mystery for 30 years. I once owned two MZ-1, right at the very beginning of the format(purchased new) both of them appeared to me to have a recording bug where it wasn't able to record for more than 60 minutes of music on a 74 minutes disc without displaying a disc error fault. So bothof the machines went back and I waited and purchased an MZR3. Can you record more than 60 minutes of music on a 74-minute disc or is there a design issue with this model. It plays back perfectly ok if you record the content on another machine first.

Thanks for watching! Yeah I was listening to my little Sharp MD player the other night and it's great that those discs I have even from 1999 still play fine. Many are a snapshot from that period. In fact I remember using iTunes around 2004-2010 and losing many of my playlists over that period of time, but my MDs are like playlists on disc that still work great and I'm so glad I made them. In fact I wish I had recorded my iTunes playlists from 2004-2010 onto MD, then I would still have them. But sadly that was the iPod era for me where I had stopped using my minidisc player/recorder. The MiniDisc was for the CD, what the Philipps minicassette was for the Reel-to-reel bands. A really great standard, very convenient, killed by the 1.8-inch hard drive based players (think iPod). And contrary to the following MP3/AAC player, it is a stand-alone player and a stand-alone recorder (for recorders), no need for any computer, all play pre-recorded discs, recorders could record from Mic, from you analog equipment and your digital (CD) equipment. The magic was the ability to reorder tracks, delete any track and then add new tracks, and name them: nor the CD nor the minicassette had these abilities with so much flexibility!

Great video! Such a shame MD didn’t take off more. I bought mine in I think 1999. I never liked burning CDs. They often malfunctioned and were just not as nice objects as cassette tapes or minidiscs. Minidiscs were basically superior cassette tapes to me (and cassettes are the medium MD should be compared with). MD didn’t wear out as you listened to, sounded better, you could easily skip songs and they were lighter and more durable. I bought a nice Sony stereo condenser mic for my Sony MZ-R70 which made incredible field recordings when I was backpacking. And the minidisc was just amazing for picking up music while travelling. I would bring a couple different audio cables so I could record from headphone and aux outputs. So in hostels and cafes the owners would often let me record a cd I liked. Or when meeting fellow backpackers I would connect my MD Walkman to the headphone output of their Discman and get new music. So amazingly portable for travelling. Much more so than mp3 that requires a computer. Even today I can’t plug a discman straight to my iPhone and record it. Much less make a mixtape to give away. Plus minidisc runs on AAs which I could buy anywhere. Greatest travel format of all time.

I think we lived parallel lives. I too drove tractor trailer OTR and used MD on the road. I always hated tapes and vinyl sucks (sorry golden ear audiophiles but snap, crackle, pop & skip blows) but it was all we had in the 80’s and 90’s. I used to record my vinyl to tape to try and preserve the record. When CDs came out I was in love and spent a ton of money rebuying all my records on CD then selling the vinyl to used record shops. I have zero regrets about that. Good riddance as far as I’m concerned. The introduction of MD recorders and players were the answer to all my musical needs. I just wish they came out before CDs, everyone would have loved them as much as I did. Nobody “needs” MD anymore (I guess) but nobody needs a 65 mustang either. A Tesla is better in every way but I’m sure the Mustang lovers wouldn’t agree.
@roxics
@roxics Год назад
As much as love the CD as a technology, I kind of agree. Standard Minidscs are supposed to be inferior to CDs because the audio is compressed, but I'll be damned if I can hear the difference, honestly. Plus if you're listening on the road or pretty much anywhere that isn't a perfect listening environment with perfect headphones or loudspeakers, I don't think that difference really matters. Even then I'm not sure I could hear the difference. But the smaller size, the ability to record like a cassette, the protective shell, the metadata on disc, all of that made MD better than CD. So I would have gladly traded CD for MD as the standard format back then and like you kind of wish it had either come out first had at least been affordable enough when it did come out in '92 that more people had leap onto it. (including myself in '92 instead of '99)

Portable CD players were abysmal. Breathe too heavily next to one and it would skip. You need to compare the MiniDisc with it's portable counterpart. Factor in the type of headphones that you used on a portable device and there is virtually no audible difference in quality. The buffer, initially of 10 seconds but latterly 40 seconds, meant you could actually use the MiniDisc on the move. I lived through the era and most people didn't upgrade from cassette walkmans to CD walkmans because they were so unreliable and bulky. The cassette quality was far inferior to the MiniDisc but the reason to not upgrade to MiniDisc was the high price of the hardware, nothing to do with the sound quality.

It's just an older, much shittier way to compress music. It's digital. Bad digital. There's no magic to recapture. At least an argument can be made for the cassette and vinyl record as those two formats provided a lively sound experience. CDs and MDs are just digital on physical media.
@roxics

I think that if you're looking for a unique sonic experience you can buy from a store, you're right. You're better off with one of the countless analog formats. Their imperfections add a certain character. Like an old worn out leather jacket. I think Minidisc is about the physicality of the discs and the nostalgia of the format from a time when it made more sense than it does today. That said, my favorite minidiscs are actually the ones I recorded myself using an analog input. I didn't always get the levels right so sometimes it was a bit hot, and there were other imperfections that have lead to an interesting sound quality that falls somewhere between a CD and a tape. I never got that experience on a CD-R. So I think minidisc can offer something a little different even sonically when you use it like it was an analog tape deck.

@@roxics Fair enough, I mean don't get me wrong. Back in 1998 when I felt Minidisc had matured enough and were sticking around, I made the switch from cassette. Held on to MD through the net MD era until I bought my first iPod (with video), the 60GB model. Today I stream, like everyone else but every once in a while I dig out my old records and tapes as they give me a much nicer sonic experience imo. I have/had decent analog equipment, so it helps. Cheers.
