CLIP DESCRIPTION:
George (Gary Sinise) takes a dead mouse away from Lennie (John Malkovich), causing Lennie to cry, but promises to one day buy him a puppy.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Gary Sinese directed this respectful re-telling of John Steinbeck's classic novel, with Sinese as the wily George and John Malkovich as the brutish, simple-minded Lennie. Set during the Depression era, the film opens as George and Lennie are running from a woman with a torn dress, who has sent a gang of ruffians to chase the two out of the county. After a long bus ride and a ten-mile walk, George and Lennie arrive at a migrant farm in California's San Joaquin Valley, where they seek work. George dreams of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land where he and Lennie can build a home; he hopes that in California the two can realize their dream. Unfortunately, the foreman of the ranch, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), enjoys tormenting Lennie, while Curley's frustrated wife (Sherilyn Fenn) entices Lennie with her sexual allure. George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley's wife, but Lennie follows her to a barn where a tragedy occurs and George and Lennie's dreams are shattered.

I read this book in high school in the 1970s. Never would I’d ever imagine I would be the mother of Lennie. I’ve shown this movie to him and he knows what is happening. I call my little grandson George because our Lennie is blind and deaf and autistic. John Steinbeck really understood and experienced the human condition in all it’s sorrows.God bless everyone.

I remember reading this at school. The movie was a good rendition, but I have yet to see the original. It is a film about loneliness and the need to belong in the time of desperation (it was the great depression), and the finding of companionship between two men that was rather like brotherhood. It is deeply moving and sad mainly because of the lack of understanding of Lennie's condition and the overwhelming danger it puts them in. John Malcohvich delivered a great performance.

I never realised there was a dead mouse in this movie...crazy. Here's why: the phrase "Of Mice and Men" originally comes from a poem about a farmer who is in the middle of a cold winter. He walks outside into the snow and sees something strange on the ground. He turns it over and it turns out it was a mouse nest. Being as it's the middle of winter and he's in the plainlands of America, it's below freezing, so the mice die almost instantly. The farmer doesn't realise what he has done until it's too late and the baby mice die. It is a metaphor for being stronger than you realise...having a negative impact on the world because you were stronger than you realise, even when you dont have bad intentions. It's a metaphor for the mistakes we all make without meaning to do harm. It is one of my favourite metaphors ever.

This is late but sometimes you have to be tough in order to get a point across. As someone who adores Lennie's character, this scene broke my heart. But I understand george had to do it because it's a dead mouse and Lennie could get sick. It could've also been perceived as strange by then boss and the other ranchers when they arrived to the ranch.

I first saw this when I was 8. Never felt that Lenny or anyone else with that condition was the object of ridicule. Thought nothing of it. Then my 10th grade English teacher told us all "Please. Be kind to Lenny." I tried so hard not to laugh out loud. I put my head on the desk and covered up. The teacher told me to watch the movie or get detention. I told him I'd take it.

Just finished reading this at school. It was brilliant! However we're not doing it in our exams because it's not "English" it's more American slang. 😒

We all imagined lennie to be bigger but if you think about it, if he was like above 300 LBS he wouldn’t work cuz he couldn’t move well. So I guess this is reasonable.

Gary Sinise is such a talented man was the perfect actor to play George...he is also an accomplished director as he also directed this I can remember reading Of Mice and Men in English Lit and I told my teacher about this film took me ages to find a VHS copy of it 😆 ffs now am showing my age 😂😭. Was a great film though and the critics loved it 👍
