Thanks! Nifty oven. I've got 2 rocket stoves for power outages that happen often. For baking I've been experimenting with dutch ovens/ camp stoves. I use briquettes because I can control them more accurately. For baking bread, the trick is to turn the top 1/4 turn in one direction and the bottom 1/4 turn in the opposite direction every 15 minutes. Twice as many briquettes on the top as the bottom, or twice as many coals. But, the Coleman stove is so much lighter and easier.... Good idea about the welding cloth!

Thanks - I just used my coleman oven on our rocket stove today for the first time after seeing your video. I made cornbread from a cheap mix - I don't like the mix but it was the cheapest I could find to do a test with - it worked great. I didn't use the blanket but I got one of those two to use on windy or colder days. I had no trouble getting the temp up - today I had to work on keeping the temp down some. I do have a pizza stone in the bottom of the oven and may try putting a baking rack between the oven and the rocket stove to keep the oven bottom flat

I just finish filling a 70 gal barrel with small Wood pieces cut to fit in a rocket stove. That was quite a job. All from pruning my apple and peach trees. So safe wood to use with food. I think that should last for some time don't you think? They seem to be very efficient.

Brilliant use of the welding blanket! You did it again! In order to go hotter, I would try either stitching the corners together to make it more glove-like, or maybe just clothespin them together making them instantly adjustable. Slots could be cut in the blanket to align with the vents and the thermostat. This could be done utilizing the entire uncut blanket for maximum coverage. The front could be unclipped and folded back to gain access to the interior. You might even sew yours back on, but just across the center/top to facilitate opening and closing the door. the ends could be clipped at whatever position you prefer. Love, Love, LOVE your videos!!

Very interesting and fun. I just got an Ecozoom Versa rocket stove. I haven't even used it yet. Already I'm interested in duplicating your experiment. I'd hate to think what would happen if that oven falls off of the stove, though. If I could cut a round hole in a flat surface and stick the rocket stove underneath it, I'd be able to set the oven on the flat surface without worry of it sliding off. I could repurpose a 3-tier metal cart to build an outdoor stovetop with a couple of these rocket stoves. Suddenly I'm interested in learning some metalwork skills. 🤔

If you decide to try the oven liner made of foil, it's available at grocery stores. If you make a clip at the corners diagonally, set your oven on top of the foil liner. Lift sides slightly and it creates a tray and protective screen against the smoke. I hope you try it sometime when you are not busy with flood issues.

Just a thought about off grid: [this video may not be the best place to post but here goes]…if we all really do face what they expect is coming, and i believe we will, dont forget another source of liquid. The liquid in canned veggies can be used in emergencies to drink or cook with. So what if your oatmeal tastes like corn juice or carrot water! This crazy world is really making me use my brain. All liquid that is from canned veggies can be very helpful.

I love how you are so thorough in your "investigation" into using things for emergency purposes. I've watched a few of your videos and I've now subscribed. Question, what do you think of canning water in glass jars to keep for emergencies? Do you think, if kept in a dark, cool place, that it will stay good? I know some prep companies sell canned water now.
@RoseRedHomestead
@RoseRedHomestead 3 года назад
Thanks for the complements. As far as the water for emergency purposes, we just wash them with hot soapy water, rinse, and fill them with fresh water, put lids and rings on them, and store them in the garage. If you have what you consider to be good water, why buy the water? And yes, some places, tap water is not suitable for drinking or storing and the other alternative is to buy bottles water and store it. On the other hand, if you store bottled water, make sure the water is bottles are safe for storage. Thanks for watching our channel.

I have an ecozoom and wanted to keep the soot out of the stove. I bought a steel plate, but it took so long to heat and didnt let the heat transfer very well....then I put heavy duty foil, 3 thicknesses on the bottom, flaring out the sides. Everything was doing well until the first thickness started to burn through...still trying to problem solve. Please let me know if you have. Ps. My chocolate chip cookie test was phenominal!
@RoseRedHomestead
@RoseRedHomestead 2 года назад
ES: W had not thought of foil as solution to the soot. I am not sure we can do anything about it. The major problem we have is keeping the fire stoked and even heat, and sometimes the smoke. Jim
@esmiller4926
@esmiller4926 2 года назад
So through all of my testing I have found out that the steel plate is the answer to not having the soot/smoke go straight up into the Bottom chamber of the oven... But then the smoke started to follow the square bottom of the steel plate. Yesterday I found my answer. I now use a foil of oven liner on the bottom bottom between the steel plate and the oven. The steel plate evens out and maintains the temperature... And the oven liner foil blocks the smoke/soot away from the oven. There is no smoke residue inside the oven. (I have a baking stone on the inside of the oven)

I bet you’d like the sun oven. It’s solar. A little pricey, but well worth it. Check it out. Sunoven.com

I do like the SunOven! I have one. I believe in redundency preparation, so I have several ways for cooking/baking off grid.

@@RoseRedHomestead I so appreciate you mentioning you have a back-up to your back-up in other videos! It is currently snowing where I live and I think you've mentioned it snows where you live too. If we rely on only a solar oven, we're in trouble! I was extremely happy to see you try this out! I was wondering just the other day if this oven would work on a rocket stove! Thanks so much for sharing! I see you did this video almost a couple years ago, but I just now saw it. Thanks again! 😊 Oh, and another thing.... why on earth does this video only have 500 something like when it's been watched over 8K times! Shame on everyone! 😆
