One recommendation for hiking, get your gmrs license and carry a gmrs radio with you. Both are inexpensive and if anything should happen you have the ability to contact others. I was a volunteer search and rescue technician for 15 years, and if we were looking for missing hikers we always asked if the missing person carried a radio. That way we could use the standard gmrs frequencies to aid in searching for people. Also, since you carry a backpack with you, never never leave it somewhere. Always keep it with you. When you hit your head, you could have injured yourself and needed items in you pack that you did not have. Take it off and crawl through the narrows, but keep a hold of it. Just my opinions.....

I think she has an iPhone 15 which is why she mentioned sos, since it has a satellite feature so you can reach emergency services even if you have no cell reception.

Don't bother with the GMRS license and just get one anyway. Get a Baofeng UV-5R or 8R, and program in the FRS/GMRS, weather radio, MURS, and HAM radio frequencies. Stay off the HAM frequencies except for emergencies.

I agree with never leaving your pack behind for any reason, your life could depend on it. I have been hiking, hunting and fishing in the back country of the rocky mountains for the last 35 years and accidents happen in the blink of an eye. You will need your pack! Be careful and stay safe Sarah.

Nice pack. You should always carry the 10 Essentials, even on a day hike (food, water, shelter, fire starter, etc... look up the recommended list). You should consider getting a Garmin InReach, or similar, if you don't have one already. You can message for rescue when out of cell service, best for those remote hikes.

Most deaths in the backcountry are from exposure and dehydration so here are few small, and light things, to carry: water treatment pills, Mylar emergency blanket, cheap poncho and have some waterproof, strike anywhere matches. Wet and cold is a combination for an overnight death. Reason for carrying this additional items is you want to be able to survive a night or two just in case. Good luck and have fun!

100% agree with Dave and my recommendation is to always carry at the very least one trekking pole. These work great for warding off unwanted encounters with critters and reptiles. Can also be used as a make shift splint if needed. Also be sure your first aid kit has a Mylar blanket. This will help keep you warm in case you can’t find your pack and it gets dark and the temp drops. ILove the videos! Keep up the good work :)

I would also get a good tactical flashlight like a Fenix with a SOS/strobe function. If you are injured in a remote place at night, it could help air assets find you. I would also get your Technicians Class Ham license (really easy) and carry a ham walkie-talkie radio with you as well. You can get a Baofeng for less than $100. Also an Airtag for your backpack!

You might consider putting an Airtag in your backpack in case you ever really lose it. It would require you having your phone with you and having cell service in order to find it but I suspect that you usually will have cell service where you are hiking. I have AirTags stashed in most of my serious gear.

Another good video, Niki better watch out! At 80, I have spent many thousands of nights camping alone in many situations. I have felt uneasy and packed up and moved less than 10 times. But if anybody gives you the least feeling of unease, the least mind you, quietly and unobtrusively leave. Don't worry about doing your usual leave prep, just leave without drawing attention to yourself. It will happen very, very infrequently (10 out of thousands), but when it does, act.

Sarah might be time to invest in a jackery power source and a refrigerator cooler for food. Also some basic camping cooking stuff and you could at least have hot beans and corn next go round.

How beautiful! I'm jealous! What happened to your jar of peanut butter in your car door? LOL When I'm outdoors I wear a cotton sailor-style hat. I can fold a bill when I want, or put it up when I don't. It also covers my ears from the sun, and is cooler than baseball caps. It's also better if it starts to rain. Also, I love a walking stick! Just one for me. When you left you backpack behind, you also left your first-aid kit and water/food. You could pack an essentials bag inside your backpack (a small backpack inside the backpack) and then left the larger one at the entrance, and the lighter one with water and first-aid kit you'd take with you. However, its best to take the pack with you so you don't have to double back for it. I bet you'll get a lot of comments like this about your backpack. LOL Keep on having fun!

KT tape, or Leuko Tape works better than any bandaid for blister care, and always worth having in a kit for hiking, aquatabs and a water filter are 2 more must haves....while you may never need one, i always recommend keeping a couple mylar blankets in the kit too...they are super small to pack, but in case of emergency, you can use to stay warm...one to protect from ground cold, another around the body .....personally i always have the water filter and tabs, and a fire starter, and the mylar blankets for shelter/warmth, in addition to a first aid kit on any hike i go....the ability ro source drinking water, stay warm and sheltered should always be on hand...above and beyond any water or food brought....a person could go on about things that are useful...i always pack a rechargeable headlamp, battery bank and never hike without a garmin inreach explorer or in reach mini

You need to get a dog for hiking, their senses are much better than ours and can alert you to things you might not know are there, my previous dog once alerted me to a black bear, luckily it did its thing and went about it’s life without an interaction too close to me and my current dog alerted me to a cougar that I would have never known and actually the only trace I seen of it were it’s tracks but the pup started tracking a scent and actually took me direct to the physical tracks where I was able to identify what she was after.

No judgement about food -- I usually tell people to carry tins of sardines in olive oil, unless they're vegan. Shelf stable protein that goes with almost anything. If you need a "grain", cous cous requires minimal cooking (same as coffee or tea), and combines well with any canned vegetable. Oh, and for saving leftover canned goods, I pick up a few plastic pet food can covers.

Very nice! Love your videos. It is nice that your viewers make suggestions. We live and hike in the Pacific Northwest. We have Moose, Deer and an occasional Bear in my yard. When hiking we always carry Bear Spray on our belt or attached to our backpacks. When I was going to college in California, I always carried a Rattlesnake bite kit. I ran into several Rattlesnakes while hiking. Glad I had a kit just in case. I visited your Amazon store. Very nice. Please, keep up the wonderful work. So, glad you are being safe.

Sarah, you should get one of those GPS wristwatches, that tracks your movements. I seen ForestyForest use one for when he's hiking in the deep mountains of Canada by himself. The watch provides the ability to follow the path back in your exact steps. So you can never get lost. Plus it connects to satellites so if you need emergency services, it will call them for you. Congrats, Cutie! You did it! Not sure you should have dumped your backpack to explore the fissures cause that is when you might have needed your first aid kit. You are getting more comfortable with the camera and your videos are great.

Maybe it may be usefull to bring something against the heat and something against the rain during a hike. But that is only due to own experience! Good video! ❤
