Off Grid Couple | Our New Life - Canadian Wilderness, Day 11
• Off Grid Couple | Our ... - This is a mega VLOG of our Off Grid life in a British Columbia Rainforest on Vancouver Island. Nicole and I grow our own food our raised bed garden plots, finish the platform of our Yurt, cook vegan food, and take a short trip to visit friends and get supplies in Vancouver! Subscribe...there is more to come! We begin putting the actual Yurt up tomorrow (the platform is the hardest and more necessary part)!
This Yurt build and Yurt life will be a journey, we hope you SUBSCRIBE and come with us! Enjoy #yurt #offgrid #tinyhouse #alone #livingoffgrid #garden #offthegrid #gardening #DIY
Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

The ONLY downside: it is too cold to grow warm climate and tropical fruit, vegggies, herbs and spices if you are into growing that sort of thing (like you used to when you lived in Arizona). Unless you construct a greenhouse with a means of heating during the cold Canadian winters. I love the whole off-grid/self-sufficiency lifestyle, though. Growing your own organic and pesticide-free food so as not to be reliant on the big grocery stores, which our modern society takes for granted!

Awesome work guys! Phoenix desert to north Island rainforest. Intriguing difference. I was born in Douglas, Arizona but grew up in central BC. Similar but opposite to you Jake. My wife and I built an off grid mountain cottage in the Okanagan two winters ago and it only gets better every time we go back. We had wood heat, compost toilet and at the time one 100 watt solar PV panel which gave us LED light for 3 hours a night. Pleasure through hard work:) Presently we are back in Douglas planting a permaculture food forest in the high desert inspired by your work in Phoenix. So far plum, peach, apricot, lemon, lime, nectarine and today quince and fig. Enjoy the north Island guys. I helped build the 55 unit Vestas wind farm up there, went ocean sailing with a friendly local, ate a fresh salmon and faced down a big grizzly. I love how you rediscovered the old logging roads our grandparents built. It was the same up the mountain in the Okanagan. Be safe; good work:)

Jake & Nicole - another great offering and extra long too! So much happening in this episode it was great to watch as it never slowed down. We can only imagine how much time you require to film and edit everything and that the project would be going so much faster without the camera's. . . but then there would be no youtube channel documenting your journey. So a BIG thank you for taking the time to film everything and share you journey. It's true about the weather comment in the live chat as Lance worked out of Bear Cove for many years so we really know the entire island very well. In the summer there is a line around the Sayward Junction it is cool, misty and 15 degrees to the north, while the south island has sunshine and 25-30 degrees. Enjoy the sunny weekend and we wish you all the best for the yurt assembly. If you need any help drop us an email; we're in your inbox. Lance & Carol - Victoria

I live in MD and have native pawpaws all along my lot. They have unusual blooms now and then the leaves come. The wildlife loves the fruit so I have competition to get it when it's ripe. The taste and texture are similar to bananas but they have several big seeds in the fruit. Great in smoothies.

Wow, that’s so cool that you were able to find pawpaw and sea buckthorn at the garden centre. No one carries them here in Toronto... I have to order mine from a specialty nursery outside of the city. Just a tip that you are probably already aware of, but pawpaws need to be shaded for at least the first three years. Direct sun will be a quick end for them. Good luck!

I LOVE watching this channel and trying to mimic all of the vegan athlete’s dishes. I was wondering if you’ve ever cooked with Puerto Rican sofrito. It’s a traditional delicious base for soups, stews, beans, etc and it’s 100% vegan. I’m not sure if you have access to some of these ingredients up in the Canadian wilderness but if you do you should try it. I promise you won’t be disappointed. To make sofrito you will need, fresh coriander leaves, fresh cilantro, fresh garlic gloves (lots of it), onions (I like to use a variety but just red or white is fine too), Puerto Rican sweet peppers (called aji (singular) or ajices (plural) in Spanish) sweet bell pepperss work as a substitute. I also like to add a jar of charred red bell peppers for a little smoky flavor. You take all of these ingredients, rinse them, chop them up and place them in a blender until you make a paste. Some folks add a ittle EVOO for a smoother consistency. It’s super easy to make and super delicious. In preparation for a stew, add some oil to the bottom of a pot and heat, sauté 2 or 3 heaping tablespoons of sofrito in it (and prepare yourself for the heavenly smell) then add the rest of your ingredients. You many never go back to NOT using it. Haha.

Make sure you weed the buttercups diligently around those Egyptian walking onions or they won't walk. The buttercups will suck the lifeforce from the soil and the onions won't grow tall enough to walk. I was hoping to feature the Egyptian walking onions on my main channel (titantoplist) but the buttercups thwarted my efforts to make them walk but not this year!

There's so many rookie errors in this build it really is a shame they didn't do more research before they started , it's not rocket science to do it right ,but yeah he doesn't like any criticism pointing his errors it seems it's the Blind leading the blind here.
