All the keyboard warriors telling another man how to lift things. Pipe down you boring muppets.
@twestgard2
@twestgard2 3 года назад
I had a client with a spinal cord injury caused by improper lifting that made it impossible to sit, stand, or lie down for more than 15 minutes at a stretch. Obviously he couldn’t work or even really care for himself, his personal relationships deteriorated into nothingness, and while opiates provided some relief if taken in volume, it’s not much of a life to be nodding off all the time. His was the worst situation I saw but I had hundreds of other clients whose lives were utterly destroyed by spinal damage caused by lifting injuries. I don’t yell at people who lift improperly because I know it doesn’t do any good, but there’s a living hellmouth yawning for people with spinal injuries. FYI.
@DaveDaveAlanAlan
@DaveDaveAlanAlan 3 года назад
@@twestgard2 I didnt see him lift improperly, nothing wrong with deadlift. 'lift with your knees they say' - yeah fuck that, my knees are fucked from lifting with knees. proper form is legs + back. Look at any pro doing a deadlift, hinge at waste, slight bend, straight back.
@KrisHarbour
@KrisHarbour 3 года назад
I have actually been lifting heavy things for my entire adult life. My previous job involved a lot of heavy lifting, i have fitted over 60 elevators from the point they arrive on site on a lorry to a functional lift and i worked alone doing this for over 6 years. I have done power lifting for years and used to dead lift 155kg i then went on to rock climbing at a pretty decent level for a few years. in the last 5 years built most of these buildings mostly alone. Just this workshop alone weighs over 150 tons and i have moved most of it myself a few times over. I would not know where to even start in working out the total amount of mass i have moved working alone but its in the thousands of tons. And in all this time working alone moving things heavier than i am i have had just a handful of muscle injuries and none of them were while lifting. the worst one was from pulling a bramble out the ground and the last shoulder injury i had i woke up with having no idea how i did it. that is over 17 years of heavy lifting and no bad back. Being young helps of course but im 34 now so not exactly a spring chicken, i dont think heavy lifting is the thing that hurts backs. i think its lack of heavy lifting and then lifting heavy things that hurts backs.
@twestgard2
@twestgard2 3 года назад
@@DaveDaveAlanAlan Yeah, I hear that. Your first comment sounded to me like “it doesn’t matter how you lift,” whereas your second comment sounds more like “it matters but he’s doing it right.” There are a lot of people who say the first thing and I’ve had to deal with the consequences of that bad advice. The second thing is much more reasonable.
@twestgard2
@twestgard2 3 года назад
@@KrisHarbour I appreciate the response. Sounds like you have a lot of experience and training, and most importantly you’re paying attention to safety. Obviously one could always say more about lifting but hey, RU-vid has all kinds of videos on that topic too, right? 😀

@Kris Harbour Natural Building I know you prefer an organic look but have you considered the strength of your walls in this project? Several projects I've seen that use a vertical earth bag wall have had shear failures. Did you consider doing your lower course in tire walls then upper as bags? This could give a more conical wall cross section & improve stability.

I wonder how much all those bags cost in comparison to the cost of traditionally insulated stud-walls and sheathing? I would assume the R value is going to be a bit higher than fiberglass insulation. Also, if those bags are made from polypropylene they usually do not last more than a year or so in direct sunlight, hopefully that won't be an issue for you..
