In reality, it's way less than 59.5% when you take into account the embedded energy in all of your equipment, vehicles, and any other purchased items. But it doesn't matter, we don't live in isolation from the rest of the world, we are all part of it whether we want to be or not. What's important is how we choose to spend our precious time in this world. It's sparklingly clear how much you enjoy your homestead and that is 100% priceless.

Admittedly, I was amazed by the girls building their cabin. I will say, of all the projects you've shared with us, the root cellar was the project that convinced me, this is the family who knows self-sustainability. I truly look forward to every video Gridlessness produces. You have raised excellent daughters.

When I was a kid in the 1970's we use to go to the Ottawa Valley where my grandfather was born and raised, his childhood home was "off grid". And so was everyone else's because there was no electricity, gas, or plumbing. We cooked on a wood burning stove, we used an outhouse, and read by candle light and kerosene lamps. Time was a grandfather clock and wrist watch that we had to wind everyday and I can't remember if there was a phone. Hard to imagine just 100-120 years ago we were all off grid. I believe if we still lived like this life would have more meaning.

Don't ever change. Your young women are the strongest, smartest, prettiest females I have seen in a long time.

The only person I know of, who is more off grid than you, is Martijn Doolaard (who also has a RU-vid channel) who is currently renovating 2 old stone buildings in the Italian Alps. Factoring in fuel for his vehicle and a few things like that, he is likely 95 percent off gird. You all are one of my Most favorite channels. Your content is educational, inspiring and funny. Your location up north hampers you. Providing heat is the north's biggest draw back. Here in Mexico the hardest commodity is fresh water. And gardens use Alot. But everything is easier in warm climates. From a former Canadian.

Random suggestion. Kaz can move to the top bunk, repurpose the lower one, and make it a little lounge relax area. Wall decor can be rearranged higher toward the ceiling for a more spacious feel.

Absolutely amazing lifestyle; Would definitely take baby steps but well worth the cost and struggle for the INDEPENDENCE and FREEDOM ! This may be one of the best video's you have ever produced Jeff. I really enjoyed seeing the vast abundance that represent the fruits of all your families labor. I wonder how The Amish would fair in regards to your Gridlessness index. I think that The Amish would want to give you a few minus points for the electronics and the WIFI. But lets face it... The Amish have never been on-the-grid. It has to be easier to be off- the-grid if you were never on-the-grid in the first place. I'm also curious in regards to the girls tiny house. The two oldest (Sarah and Abigail) built it. So it would make sense that Julia would have been next in line to live there when Sarah got married to Ethan and moved off the property. But if I remember correctly Christina moved in with Abby after Sarah left. Did Julia make the decision that she would be more comfortable in the original cabin? Or was there some other factor that came into play? Perhaps Julia owed Christina some money and she paid the debt by passing on living in the coming of age tiny house this time around? Anyway... I'm always a little curious about a lot of things and I have always wondered why it worked out the way it did. With that being said. I really am very happy about all of the wonderful blessings that have been bestowed upon all of you. It couldn't of happened to a nicer, a more energetic, or a more deserving family unit. Losing Sarah was not unlike when I was a little kid and Farrah Fawcett was written out of Charlie's Angels. While losing Dave is akin to when Radar O'Reilly was written out of M*A*S*H*.

You should rig the solar to dump excess power once the batteries are full to heat your hot water/heat the shop.

when you posting the gasifier generating power i would love to see it up & going. the last time i operated one was in the 1970. . when i left home & got marred. dad let it go to rack & rewind so i Got him an old iron horse 300 amp dc genie to crag his battery bank . imover70 now & it good to see the gasifier return to use,

Don't forget to cut out your Scapes. I make pesto from the scapes the same way you'd make Basil pesto except I substitute the scapes for the basil. It's delicious and by removing the scape you get larger bulbs.

I really enjoyed this video. You have me beat on total gridlessness. My electricity is off grid, as is water and sewer. Garden water is supplied by a 2” ram pump that will run a rainbird sprinkler, however, I cannot use overhead watering except to fertilize bare earth because the water is so rich in minerals that it puts a brown coating on everything and kills all but grass. I therefore use drip line and that is prone to plugging. We use gas to go to church and occasionally the grocery store. We get eggs but have to buy chicken feed. We have a pack of dogs 8 and two cats so we have to buy large quantities of dog food and some cat food. We hav just started gardening in earnest for chicken feed and groceries and perhaps some dog food. The dogs love figs and we should have an abundance of figs next year from our grocery row gardens. I’ve also have about 7 apple ,4 pear, a few peach, almond, nectarine, plum, and various other fruit trees and 100 acres of forest. But at this point I and still working too. I would put my score at about 18% gridlessness by your standards even though I am 100% off the electrical grid.

You can toast bread by buttering it and putting it in a frying pan on a stove and flipping it a few times. I do it when I cook bacon and eggs for breakfast. Since the skillet is full if bacon fat already I don't need any butter. Don't really care about having the toast mostly I do it to use up the bacon fat. Makes clean up easier.

Used to live in PG, moved to Alaska just over 2 years ago. I think I'm moving back to BC. Alaska sucks. Been all over BC, No roads or access to Alaska. Winter is terrible and very long. I miss BC every time I watch your videos. Just a wonderful family. God Bless you all. Alan

Those 1/4 round slabs with bark on them work great for the planking on a shed making it look like a log cabin. But needing gasoline to run engines is still technically on grid, and even if you ran alcohol (grain or wood) or a veggie oil powered diesel, it still needs motor oil, but cutting as much reliance as you can is a better way to live. You could run a generator, or even a car off of digester methane gas or even wood-gas! Eventually you can dump the automobiles for horse and a buggy transportation. As for the pigs, you can have a field where you grow all kinds of root crops like beets and turnips along with cattail roots that the pigs can even dig them up themselves.

Hey, I Homestead in North Texas and I use small PV panels to run air compressors, then I store the energy as compressed air. Very simple; works like a champ. I have many things that operate using compressed-air "motors". 37:38 Hot Water I use solar to dI rect-heat my water 9 months of the year and solar-to-oil-to -water (heat exchanger) in Winter. Easy peasy

Geoff and Rose, enjoyable video as usual. You could reduce your propane use by having a water jacket mounted on both the slow combustion stove and the fireplace and feeding the under floor heating. Both the stove and fireplace would be burning most of the colder months each year so would be capturing some of the heat for floor heating.

There are so many other “grids”. What about education? Medical? Clothing? Etc… but still, you’re doing better than most and at least you’re learning about it and helping others to as well. Great video!

What's the reason you don't have a better shower set-up. 12 volt pump with a propane hot water unit, you can get a instant hot water unit that will ignite when water runs through its internal wheel.

i just subscribed and hit the thumbs up. im around 90% with this, just the water system. have you thought of trying to dig a well? your wife and daughter going along with every thing is awesome! it sure helps. the out house with the view is the best ive seen. maybe not thou in the winter. 5

We are looking to purchase an additional 112 acres here in Patagonia soon. We have a homestead but now we are going to up our game. Hydro Electric and all part of one price. We grow all our own food. No grid available. No phone service. No public water. NO TAXES>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SEAFOOD and BEEF.... No government interference. Jim

As someone whose kinda stuck in an urban environment Im grateful for you guys sharing your amazing slice of the world. What about biogas? The shitter and animal manures would probably be enough to supplement a chunk of that propane reliance maybe, or use it to heat a hotwater system and hobb for the main house. Anyway, your homestead is basically perfect well done to you all!

Have you thought of wood gasification? Storing the gas when you make your own charcoal. Then running your small engines off that wood gas.

Man, oh man, what an awesome home stead. A little suggestion, if you want to eliminate your gas and propane. Build a still and replace gas with alcohol. And a steam pump. Also, your ram pump could be running over a water wheel. There's way more you could do to get more off grid. My last little Nugget of info is replace propane with bio gas using Compost bladders. OK I love your place PS I've never done anyone the things I suggested, but the still.
