Off-grid hydro installation with rocks in pipe

Very midgy installation, also with many small rocks being drawn into pipeline by the vacuum from closing the intake sluice. Some good pipe flushing action. Turbine is sited outside old shed to be on top of tailrace.
Ultimately frustrated due to record drought conditions. Only enough water in storage pond for a few hours of operation. Waiting for rain now. New Sunny island inverter and batteries and legacy Lister diesel. Some breeding Falcons and a collie dog.

@corsomail1 The pipe was installed by the owner of the system to save money. There were some issues there for sure. The payback is quite rapid in a situation like this where he is relying on diesel power. I am an amateur in the true sense that I love my work :-)I have installed quite a number of low budget hydros and they don't always look slick or professional. But they do the job and deliver low-cost reliable electricity.

This was originally a diesel generator powered site. I helped the owner to install hydro and I supplied the inverter. I believe that the hydro can displace most if not all of the diesel power but I hardly ever hear any news and am not sure how effectively the system is actually managed at this time.

Hello Hugh. I am a big fan of your work. I bought a video 20 years ago on making a windmil out of a truck axle. I came up with my own system and I have been charging batteries that run my refrigerator. I have it on youtube too. Search Working home made hydro Generator/ Runs two refrigerators free electricity I have another video showing how I make it. I start with a new axel that is used for trailers.

@AlternativePowerMan The rocks were beign sucked in through gaps in the pipe joins because the turbine was being shut down by closing the top end of the pipe and this created a vacuum.

Look at the video at approximately 1:minute. THe rock and debris level in the pond is almost to the top of the sluice inlet. This might pose a serious problem. I stronly suggest that someone excavate this to below say 50 cm below the slice gate. THis will form a trap for the crap that always rolls down stream in the winter time.

I am setting up a system that looks close to yours in size and effect and would welcome a conversation on the do's and dont's - I am in Lancashire (N.W.) I have all licenses and I am at the pipe installation stage.

we are a small community in the philippines and wanted to have our own hydro generator as we are based on a small water source we are very interested to know how much the total cost for the whole system, better yet if you can also provie us to where we can get also them.

He had enough water to do a flow over sluice. Would have kept the rocks out of there. Not a good design on the intake side.

hi John, sorry but you don't get the picture. The water entering the penstock came from a nice big pool (fed by an washover screen) and was clean, but the client did not buy a valve for the bottom end (expensive) so it was controlled by closing the top end of the penstock. It turned out that he had not done a good job of joining the pipes and when the flow was stopped it created a vacuum that sucked small stones in through the gap. It took a while to figure this out (thanks to Jamie Wallace how had seen something similar before) and dig up and fix the loose pipe connection. Since then it has worked very well for many years although the falcons have sadly departed.

This is a low-head site with about 4 metres as far as I can recall. it was a few years back and my part of it was basically the electrical side. The customer did the "civil works" along with the digger driver and hence the creation of a vacuum that sucked rocks in through the gaps in the pipework somehow. The turbine was from ecowavesystems.co.uk/ and a very professional job. Controller was by www.sustainablecontrol.com

@scoraigwind
@scoraigwind 5 лет назад
hi The sand and rocks were drawn into the pipe by the vacuum created by putting the valve at the top, and not having a vent. This video is supposed to be a helpful illustration of how not to do it that way. The pipe was dug up and fixed together properly with no gaps for entry of debris, and they put a vent on it I think, or put the valve at the bottom. Either way that issue was fixed and it has worked really well ever since.

Hello can i ask what type of motor they used for mini hydro.i want to build mini hydro for the future.thank you
@scoraigwind
@scoraigwind 6 лет назад
This turbine uses an induction motor (most common type of motor in the world) with 3-phase winding and C-2C capacitor network to give single phase AC output stand-alone. YOu need a voltage regulator unless you are running it into a carefully sized fixed heating load. Electrical controller was by Sustainable Control Systems. this includes the capacitors and regulator. Excess energy is fed to hot water and space heating.

Hugh Piggott do you need a recirculating hot water tank for your dump load or can you just go to a larger tank depending on calculations? Thanks
@scoraigwind
@scoraigwind 6 лет назад
In this case I used relays to transfer the heat from one tank to another and finally to a panel heater. The relay coils are wired through thermostats. When the water is not the relay coil turns off and the current is diverted to another load. it works well but you need a lot of wires!

I see a lot of things safety wise that trouble me. Standing under loads, and that uncontrolled discharge of water in the turbine house 1:48 could have easily damaged the building and causing an accident.

It's not intended to be a technical training video. It's a real life story. Actually there is a lot to learn but I you need to ask the right questions or read the comments and my answers to them to get some of the background to it. I am not making money from this so you can take what you want from it or go elsewhere.

here is some very very very late information for you and your subs. the design of the turbine seen here, like the design of an ossberger turbine that it resembles, is Seriously Flawed. and Should Not Be Copied. assuming that a true cross-flow design is desired, certain factors dominate: a certain minimum rotor radius is necessary; perhaps, one meter; the width of the rotor is determined by the flow rate; the optimum number of rotor vanes is, perhaps, 23; the optimum operating speed is, perhaps, 20 rpm. a cross-flow turbine is, essentially, an enclosed overshot waterwheel. cheers
@scoraigwind
@scoraigwind 6 лет назад
Thanks for that opinion, David. There are plenty of small, higher revving crossflows like this around, and they work well. I am not in any way prejudiced as I have never sold one or installed one or made one. (My part in this job in the video was on the electrical side.) But I recognise that they have their place, and I think your comment is overstated. In my opinion.
@daviddavids2884

well, thanks for sharing. cheers
@alabastardmasterson
@alabastardmasterson 6 лет назад
David Davids why? Is due to air layer, cavatation, etc? And, for the application on the video would you recommend a bulb propeller setup or something else
@daviddavids2884
@daviddavids2884 6 лет назад
why, what. my comment relates only to the hydroturbine. without knowing the head and flow rate, analysis of the site is impossible. cheers
@alabastardmasterson
@alabastardmasterson 6 лет назад
David Davids your commenting on someone else's video to all their subs that the design of the turbine is flawed. You give no argument to why it is flawed, only state how it should be. What causes these flaws and what are they?

1:48 WTF ?
@scoraigwind
@scoraigwind 5 лет назад
At 1:48 they were flushing out the pipe to remove stones that had been drawn in by the suction. The closure of a valve at the top had sucked stones and debris into the pipe. This was sorted out, and then the pipe was being flushed out to clean it. I have to say that despite the alarming events portrayed, this system has worked really well ever since. The pipe design and installation by the client was the initial problem. The lesson to learn is that closing a valve at the top creates suction which can draw stuff into a poorly sealed pipe at low head. I regret that most viewers do not seem to read the notes and understand this.
