I think there are people that feel something is not right...that something is about to happen. I know I do, I feel it in my bones. I live in the country. our plan is to stay here and be prepared, we have most everything we need anyway. little by little we have been preparing for an off grid lifestyle. But yes, I feel its an emergency to be prepared...Thanks
You're right, and things are already happening, silent weapons for quiet wars, our skies are sprayed with chemtrails, our weather is being controlled our air, lungs and soil are all being contaminated with heavy metals and this is just one thing. We all need to be prepared.
You were right. Besides all the stuff that happened last year, the pipeline they've been building is almost done. It's gonna pollute most of the water in the u.s. but I guess nobody cares about that
I am someone who absolutely feels it is time to return back to the share cropping lifestyle. I feel like knowing how to grow and harvest is way more valuable than any PH.D... My issue is the mentaity is there but the finances are not. Buying land (or finding owner financing) is not cheap.
Cicely Carroll Getting out of debt is the first step to living like this. I grew up on a farm and being in debt along with the stresses of upkeep is very stressful. I wouldn't buy land with financing; unless I had the skillset to work in a job that could work along with homesteading.
Great video starry, I think people get caught up in trying to find perfect piece of property. When they do that they dont think outside the box. we bought property with no water, to find out the area has 52 inches of rain a year. Plus we only have to dig a few feet to get into ground water.people passed up the property because the got pigeon holed into thinking they need a spring or stream. thank you for your videos you have inspired us a lot.
I had a plan, and now I'm 37 years old, disabled, isolated and a slave to the medical system, ssdi, government housing and my body and mind is breaking down. I lost everything. I brought myself up by the bootstraps, and lost my hard earnings and control of my body. . If you are healthy enough and especially if you have a partner or family, you have no excuse to not be free. Run and do it. If you can move your body and are blessed with vision, do it!
In my opinion as someone who was raised on a "semi" off grid homestead, this channel is among the best if not THE best advice i have found, they cover all the bases, solar, hunting, chickens, wood heat, food preserving, water, gardening, etc. Great advice and insight. One thing is if you are serious about homesteading, as Starry mentioned in another video, start gathering your resources, buy good second hand tools at garage sales etc. and squirrel them away. Think about the "toys" you have or are contemplating buying, are they going to further your goal of going off grid or hinder you. How are you spending your money, are you being wasteful or spending intelligently? There are lots of people on the internet who call themselves "off grid" or "homesteaders" but they are not, the Hilders are really doing it and giving real world practical advice (if i may quote...?). I think i have watched every vid Starry (and Mr. H) has/have made. Thanks to the both of you !
+rain coast Love what you said!!! LOVE it!! You are getting it!! There are lots who CLAIM to be off grid or homesteaders..and it is frustrating that they are anything but. AND they are giving out information that is BAD.....There are good channels..and others..just in it for the money...and thats where the made up stuff comes from..all editing and angles and fake..it drives me crazy! WE REALLY genuinely l want to help people...I CARE about my viewers and want to empower them..I am so glad you see that! Thanks for the awesome comment!!
I just wanted to write and say thank you for all your amazing videos, and this fantastic channel you have created here on youtube. I just stumbled onto your channel last night because I have recently been thinking of the idea of homesteading. Well, your channel is just so much more! Since finding you I have subscribed, and have been watching one after another of your videos. You add a spot of joy to the day, no matter what it is you're talking about. I have found every single video interesting, and uplifting. Keep up the great work, and always remember there are most likely many, many people out there who are blessed by this channel that never take the time to write in. Thank you again for taking the time to train, teach, and tutor so many people you will most likely never meet in person, but who you are having a positive impact upon. I already consider you a dear friend, though I will never have the opportunity to share a cup of tea with you. You have touched my world and I am grateful!!! Your Friend, angela-kay~~ {P.S That egg roll recipe of yours!!! I can't wait to try it.... I'm on the hunt for colored rice! ~wink~}
+Angela Kay Parker Well thank you sooo much! How kind of you!! I love it when people find the channel and find it helpful and inspiring! I try really hard to share what I know and to uplift and empower! WE need more happy faces and joy in the world.!! So I try to share everything with a smile too!! Its amazing how God brings so many of us together and how small the world becomes by these connections!! Thank you again and welcome!!
+Starry Hilder I so agree! The best connections are God created! I'm just across the border from you here in Montana. I will be continuing to watch your videos, and praying for your continued success.
Love the honesty with building and frustration. We just finished building and luckily we were in site. They had to redo a lot of work in our request. Still have some things we can't fix. But, it's done now. Now ready to put in the gardens and chickens this Spring!
Yes Starry you are quite right in what you say about acting quickly when a nice property becomes available, we got lucky her in BC Canada after much searching and procrastinating. I'm semi-retired and will have to do a lot of hard work after years behind a desk, but I have learned a lot of skills from watching others. I have accumulated quite a lot of second hand tools over the last few years as I know they will be needed. It can be tough at times, but your dream and passion will mean that you succeed and find new purpose in your life.
I feel we are running out of time we are.we selling our house here in Tacoma Wa and moving off grid. You're videos sure are great thanks for all the info.GOD BLESS
Starry I've been looking for someone Who is living off the grid for awhile that knows how to make a video and you two are the ones I've been looking for! Can't thank you enough for your time. My wife and I have bought a off grid home in Colorado with 30 acres in the mountains. We have a well on the property and a 2800 kw power system that I think is enough for our type on living. again thanks for the videos and keep them coming. Billy & Fran from Texas
targets: shelter, food, water, clothing, healthcare and education to a sound homestead. if you stop to smell the roses in the summer instead of working on the first three, winter may be very tough. look at the weather maps, most of the country is cold if not freezing thanks for posting
great info.. also the key I think is to not be afraid to go to the unknown .. as in I wish I would have looked more in other states like Idaho and Alaska. but as you said being able to spend the weekend to get start does make a difference but the all out move also makes sense. be brave just do it.
Now, this is a great one, Starry! Since I found your channel, I've kind of binge watched here and there not in chronological order, and just found this one a years late! Good stuff here! We jumped on buying our 4.5 acres in the woods in 1975, as young couple with no money, had to borrow $900 down payment from wife's Dad! But, we made it, place with house now been paid off many years. We are on grid with electricity, a must have for air conditioning here in deep hot south. Even though we got county water a few years ago, I still like our 500' deep well water! Cold and delicious chemical free water. Keep'em coming...
Starry, my husband and I are preparing to move this spring or summer to some new land and are looking forward to starting our homestead. The problem we are running into, along with all the things you are telling us, is that more and more areas are changing laws, or developing covenants, or restrictions. It is awful how difficult this is becoming. So, we have been forced to spend more money on the land. So, now our motto is: big land, small house. Thanks for your encouragement with your videos.
I have been watching your videos for the past couple of days and am learning quite a lot! I just wanted to comment and say thank you for making and posting these! I am about to embark on a journey in my own life that could put me in the ability to afford to set myself up for homesteading and as a new grandmother I have been looking up this information furiously to learn all that I can and your videos are some that I will return to when the time is right.
Oh and, I would like to add that I love the bible verses that you include with every video! I love learning about "redoubt" real estate, I never knew such a thing existed.
New to your channel been watching a lot, LOVE, LOVE your homestead! I'm making notes on your suggestions. Thank you Starry!!! Peace to you and Mr Hilder!! :)
Thank you Thank you for this video. My Wife and I are in the process of buying our retirement home here in Texas. I have found that my original budget for this home and property would get us almost nothing. I have been so down hearted for the past few weeks thinking about the cost of a good usable home with some land. Your video showed me that I have to be realistic and purchase what the market has not what I want it to have. Your encouragement and example is so inspiring. God bless.
Just subscribed today. I look forward to watching all of you videos to gather as much info as I can. My husband and I look forward to retiring off the grid completely. I would like to do it now but still have 2 teenage boys that I dont want the state claiming we arent providing neede when wr are just not in the conventional way for them. So far two videos in. Thank you so much for this
Hi, Some very good points I like the suggestion about the trailer while building/renovating house. Here in South UK there is not many cheap land (not much land at all ;)) to buy not mentioning cost of building the house, usually renting is the only option especially for young people who did not manage to put any money aside for the deposit.
I just found your channel.. and I'm hooked. you are awesome, your lifestyle is my life goals. I'm still young but like you said im a different video, it feels like we're running out of time! You got me excited and hopeful that it's possible. I see a lot of people that live "off grid" but theu don't look like they have a normal life. It looks all ragedy and broke down and homemade. i love diy don't get me wrong, but I've never seen another channel here where they actually live off grid and it looks like this. Thank you so much for that hope :)
+Stephanie Benegas yes! you dont have to be a complete savage to live off grid! i guess your lifestyle is a direct show of who you are regardless offgrid or on. the end goal is to be independent. your comfort level can be simple but nice. thanks for watching!
Starry, good info. Would you do a video regarding how much the real estate taxes are in the area, also how do you get insurance for a piece of property like yours? I have been talking to county officials and insurance co. about a cistern and a wood burning stove. They think we are crazy since we have natural gas and city water....we just want a back up to these systems. You have much valuable experience. Thank you
could never live on homestead since am not outdoor person...but it's my dream to be close to the nature....think that's why am watching on You tube.. surely am learning many ideas and skills.
I had my plan for many years as well Starry. I had to put my plans on hold for 9 years to care for my parents so I had my last homestead in a location I didn't want and was NOT in any way ideal. I just as you know just relocated to my new property and found my 98 acre piece of property. I only spent 24K and yes it is on a railway at the front of the property but I do have 100 acres backed by crown land. 97 acres are bush and I have a well with septic and I do have a spring. I don't need septic as I use composting but it is there. It took me 1.5 years to find this property, maybe more. Yes I did purchase on my own and with cash and I recommend listening to your lawyer if you do it that way They will help you stay out of trouble. I didn't need a real estate licence at all, but I did need to listen to everything he told me. I'm still converting my reefer to a home and living in it as I do it. But for me I don't mind. I knew it would be like this. I knew to pay everything for cash and be totally debt free it would be like this. I'm still happy as a pig in poo. Even if I am startin over and things are a little harder again. But whats a little hard work? Pay off in the end. Or at least thats how I look at it. I did it once, I'll do it again. I'm just not getting any younger, so I'm doing it again now so it's done when I can't. As you know Starry I'm with you, Good info. I totally had a plan even if it meant a bit of hard times. A plan is essential and money is too. People will always need a little more than they think. I'm also a believer that the least amount of debt or no debt is the best way to success and should be a major part of the plan. Thanks again Starry. Can I just add Starry. Never be in such a rush to get your land and get it done that you get yourself something that will bring you more grief than benefit. Take your time. This is a big purchase and a life line more than just a place to live. It's not the same as buying a house in the city hooked up to services and the such.
+Red Tankgirl GOOD advice and appreciate you feedback...living and learning...that's all part of it. And like you said...whats a little hard work? AND yes I agree NEVER ever be in a hurry..being inpatient leads to costly mistakes and regrets! Patients is a virtue!!
Absolutely all respect when I say this, because I deeply admire my other fellow homesteaders, but many property parcels are available for well under $30,000. I paid far less than that for mine, and there is a water source and complete privacy. One only needs to look, and keep looking, until one finds it. That urgency you speak of, oh, yes. I feel it. Also, I've only ever bought a new vehicle once. Every vehicle but that one was bought used. ;)
First I thought the bell was on the chicken then I saw the dog. Yes my Sam and I are looking into that already. Just have to get her here and take it step by step.
I've seen one acre plots in Hawaii (on Craiglist) for between 10k-20k. Not sure about the viability for self sustaining living, but that sounds a lot better than paying 60k-90k for a few acres in the mountains, even if you get those fantastic views.
Starry, I love your videos, thank you for your advise. My husband and I have been in love with TN/NC area, love the mountains and love to be out of the city, we will love to get a property on that area. What do you think of those states? I am just learning to do caning, just got into dehydrating and also got some dehydrated food for long storage, I have been learning a lot on your channel. THANKS !!!! keep it up!!
Starry, no one touches base on job hunting as well, in the location they are looking to homestead, so they can obtain health insurance. What do homesteaders do for medical scenarios?
+Bruce Forster I am in the same boat as the rest of America..my husband doesnt have any income but he doesnt believe in Obamacare so we didnt take the insurance..I work 8 days a month so my job does give me insurance at a discount...its a difficult place our government puts us in with health care. Not even off grid can you escape that reality!!
+Starry Hilder Some companies have applied for exemption from BOcare, and I know that some people like the Amish have religious exemption. My parents use a Christian healthcare expense sharing service so that they don't have to use BOcare and their payments go to help other Christians. Be mindful that it is for MAJOR expenses and only kicks in after you have already paid a certain amount for your healthcare on your own every year.
+Bruce Forster That sounds like the usual corruption I've come to expect from this evil government. You should look into a Christian healthcare sharing service, or becoming Amish or just demanding religious exemption. :)
Snow melted very quickly. (Mister Hilder chasing hawks barefoot in the snow) I want to live off grid, build a new home properly placed for max natural energy, built like an ice box with a view of Gods goodness. I want to raise, heard, goats, sheep, cows, chickens, pigs a pony or two the Joel Salatan way. I'm ready and have the resources, My wife of fifty years wants to live in an assisted living community. My only choice is to stay healthy and out wait her.
i have been a carpenter for many many years and yes you dont have to be a carpenter to build your own home and be happy with it , i will also say that we dont need doctors or nurses or mechanics , the bottom line is you get what you pay for some people do better then others i have had people ask me for a price to build thm a house for them , then they say i cost to much and do it them selves , then they ask me to come fix it and i tell them i will for 20 percent more then what my bid price was , im not saying dont build your own , im saying you better know what your getting into their is a reason we have building codes , it is because young people building their first home then selling it and the buyer inheirits a mess built by somebody that didnt know what they were doing and created a fire hazord or a health hazored then sold it
All of the state laws and regulations of off grid living seems like a headache. The states clearly have found a way to stay in your pockets. if you buy land you must build within a certain time. You can't camp on your land.. all the crap. To really save just buy a small RV. Even then, states have regulations on parking and permits. And we thought we were free. God bless.
I don't know about Idaho but in Florida, the seller pays the real estate commission, not the buyer. It is in the sellers closing cost for marketing and selling their property. So use a Realtor in Florida...:)
OMG, Starry you have the same friends I have, lol. Im so sick of hearing. You can't build your own house. Log homes aren't effeciant, you cant use yellow pine logs, you cant saw your own wood, your ceilings are too high, your logs are too big. My goodness, people have become so dependent on other people to make things happen like building houses, planting food, doing everything for them. Now Ive become so determined that the earth will have to explode to stop me, lol. Ive been watching more of your videos. Good job. Keep up the the good work and God Bless you all. By the way, Im in North Carolina.
If we weren't a 1 income family due to my son's health we would be saving every penny to find property. It is so unfortunate to be stuck on the grid with no way to get out.
+Kira Baker Wow, complaining about your income, your child, and having to rely on available utilities (like 99% of the rest of us) online to total strangers - what a productive way to spend your day. By the way I sincerely feel really sorry for your son for having such a self-absorbed depressed and complaining mom. Count your blessings and GROW UP!
I'm not depressed nor complaining. Maybe you took it that way because of how you interpreted it when you read it. I was simply stating that I cannot work because my son needs me. Once he is older I plan to return to work. But yes I would prefer to be on a homestead and off grid. I don't want to be plugged in like the rest of the 99%. Good for you if that's your thing but I grew up differently. I also want more for my kids than to grow up plugged in. Maybe you should take your judging attitude elsewhere before attacking someone on what they write instead of asking or starting a conversation about something you might have misinterpreted.
+Kira Baker Maybe you had better read your own writing, because you come of like a self-absorbed, depressed, and complaining mom. Really, what good did your post do except for you to "air your sorry butt"? STOP WHINING!
And who are you judge me anyway? My comment was for starry. Who is a kind Christian and doesn't judge people. She often makes videos about finding ways to get off grid. Finding ways to make money. How we are pressed on time to get good land and homesteads. I look up to her. And someday when I can work and can save I will get my homestead and we will go off grid and be close to nature and my children will learn all of the things I did and have the skills to care for themselves and be prepared for anything life throws at them.
Kira Baker All that is well and good - just advising your complaining isn't helping or lifting up anyone, most of all it isn't helping you. Go ahead - ignore me and keep complaining online, hope that brings you great fruits of the spirit. I say this as someone who had health conditions and saw moms who sounded a lot like you. THANK GOD my mom didn't do that!
this is a great video there's another one which I won't say who does it. She has one valid point about going to the city and finding out whether it's agricultural property and that's about it. you are saying things that are real you did not get the flat piece of land that she's talking about but you have water because of that without digging a well. and you know how to make different areas on different levels and you've used your trees you've used your land I can handle different levels I think that works! we have a condo and an affluent neighborhood but I'm not sure that my other half is so into this as I am. His business is in the city. His other work and music is in the city. So he's afraid to leave the group of people he knows. I can't do it alone. but it's the only way I want to live I certainly can't live here I can hear the person on top of me using their bathroom and I get in trouble for growing food on the deck I'm used to having a huge yard but that's the past and I can't do anything about that it's not a mistake it was a hostile overtaking. thank you for these videos myself I cannot do it alone but I'm going to keep trying to figure it out because I have to get there I just have that urgency feeling too plus I'm not getting any younger! I want to get this setup so that the work I have to do is routine by the time I'm older. oh this is a bit stressful.
we are in the process of looking. I'm curious if you could elaborate on what you did when you realized the $30,000 wasn't enough to get the kind of land you wanted. that is how much we have saved up and am really curious what to do if that isn't enough. did you owner finance? get a mortgage? how did you get a better piece of land than the $30,000 allowed?
Rob Did you find anything? I was looking this past week with a similar budget. Maybe we should form some land group, buy a larger plot and set up couple of home sites.
Ken Lee tap on their name and then write to them and they'll know that you were talking to them. if you're on your phone of course tap if you're on a computer then use the arrow and click on their name at the bottom
If you can't afford to buy an off grid homestead and have to stay in your town, what can you do to become self sustaining? How can you become as self sustaining as possible without moving off grid?
Starry tell everyone to use a credit union if possible, they are not in it to make money, in fact they are not supposed to make money, Banks are, they sit around trying to figure out how to get your money.
i dont know about idaho but in oregon hydro power is not an option , you are not aloud to dam up creeks or drop water wheels in a river , at least not leagaly
if everybody dd what they thought was necesary for water then the streams would be permatly damaged and fish habitat would be ruined that is why its regulated , here in oregon we have seen it happen Stuart K
+grizz270 I don't know why its not happend in USA but in Germany you have to pay taxes for your solar and ask the tax office scince when they own the the sun HAha when will it come that we have to pay tax for the air we breath we pay tax for every thing els that they can live a life of luxury
Bruce Forster my wife is a seventhday adventist and has been one her whole life . i asked her about that and she said she has heard nosuch thing . as far as wood stoves are concered i heat with wood here in oregon and i wouldliketoreadthat law
I talked to a 120 acre secluded property owner this week who had a heart attack. He talked of getting to the hospital which was a challenge. What is your emergency medical plan? Thanks.
We are going to look at a property with a railroad. why is this bad? I'm not trying to be jerky. Just trying to see if there is something I'm not thinking about.
everytime a train comes thru...bad noise! when we were looking for property we stayed at several places where the train cam thru...several times a nite. no sleep!! but if that dosent bother u or some just get used to it. also trains haul alot of toxic things, chemicals ect. spills do happen. we had several in our area last year. so depending how close u are to the tracks, this could affect u. just things to think about before u make a big purchase. thanks for watching! Mr.H
+John Risch Lots of wood everywhere...that was one of our top priorities before moving.have renewable resources available..and since w rely on wood..it was a must watch this video..should help!!ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YdHOwxCJnTw.html
+Starry Hilder Thanks Starry, watched many of your videos, just didnt get to that one yet lol. I too left Wis to live much simpler life, in northern mn. not off grid yet but just started building my place 8 mo ago, so on grid for now. No debt tho.
+Guy Gregory we like it way better out here! way more year round outdoor adventure, way more quality hunting,. less people, less rules and regulations. less permits. less taxes, extremely mild winters, no humidity in summer! no mosquitoes or other pesky bugs! we had a wonderful homestead in wisconsin and finally realized for us...we were in the wrong region.
+Starry Hilder oh wow... would've thought I'd heard of that before now. Sounds like me. Too bad I'm too used to warm temps. When that happens I'll be in Texas....hopefully they'll be enough like-minded people still left in Texas at that time.
Time running out? Careful Starry people may be putting you in with the tin foil hat crowd :D Really the fact is people all over the country are feeling the same. Good solid advice as always. Thank you.
Starry is going to need our help, she has been in a bad accident. Details are here: www.gofundme.com/starryhilder A GoFundMe page was started on her behalf. Even $1 would go a long way to help her during this crisis in her and her family's life. I created an email address that I will share with Starry and her family, they will receive 100% of the proceeds by using this address. I have listed the address at the hospital where you can send cards or care packages on the GoFundMe page if you prefer send something through the mail, just so everything is in one central location. Starry has a daytime job as a nurse and needs our support to help with bills and running her homestead while she is recovering. As you all know she also contributes immensely to her homestead's upkeep and her contribution will be missed. If everyone donates only $1 it will go a long way to help her keep things running. If you can't donate but still want to help, here is a poster you can print and share: tinyurl.com/j988m54 Here is a link to an update video she posted yesterday: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Til0Cj-yKc.html Thank you for anything you can do to help.
I don't have acreage. What I have is a nice size backyard, but I'm trying to use the BTE method to grow. We do have some volcanic type of ground around the area, but in my yard, it's too hard to grow, so I'm trying a little at a time to get the yard to where I CAN grow.
