FULL Explanation of how a water filter and UV water sterilisation system works INCLUDING design Tips and Tricks about each part of the installation.
Your requirements may be different to mine and at the moment, this is what works for me... however you should still be able to use the information in the video to help with your install.
I would always recommend having your water tested to be sure it is safe for consumption.
Just a quick note on the ‪@DaveyWaterProducts‬ RainBank pump controller that I used (and it's a bit disappointing)... It requires mains water pressure in order for the controller to activate... so even if your water storage tank is full of water and for some reason the mains water supply fails / drops out / pressure drops really low, the controller won't activate which renders your harvested tank water useless. Looks like a good product let down by one aspect of the design that I think needs to be improved upon. Check out the pinned comment at the top of the comments section of this video ( • Installing a Rainwater... ) for a more complete example / description.
Main parts of the system:
⚙️ Davey Rainbank pump controller ‪@DaveyWaterProducts‬
⚙️ DAB pump amzn.to/3JMW2rL (couldn't find a reference to the exact pump I used but the DAB Minibox is also a great pump with built-in controller - I used the JetCOM 82M)
⚙️ 20" Filter housing amzn.to/3ZVjngx (this is the regular size filter - I used the 20" slimline)
⚙️ UV Steriliser amzn.to/3mVh9yZ
Tools used:
🧰 Pipe Cutter amzn.to/3YTPufi
🧰 Adjustable wrench amzn.to/3LvSn2E
🧰 Water pump pliers amzn.to/3YXjUgL
🧰 SDS Rotart Hammer amzn.to/3TvLZdW
🧰 Measuring tape amzn.to/40hXrM7
and a few other common tools like screw drivers, hammers, etc.

Hi Zakariyah, I'm already busy working on the next video related to rainwater harvesting... so that should be out soon.

Hi! Really great videos! Water prices in NL are that low that these kind of systems have a really bad ROI. Though I'm working on a system because I think it's a waste to use drinking water for toilet and washing machine. In this video you show and explain the filters and uv. However, considering one would use the water only for flushing toilets and for the washing machine (so not for consumption or washing/showering), is the uv and 2nd filtering even necessary? Or even the first stage for that matter? What is your/or others opinion regarding that?

Hi Glen, thanks very much. It's always good to hear others are finding the videos useful. I'm no expert though... just a regular old guy with a bit of practical experience.

Hi Grant, First of all thank you for the presentation. However it is utter frustrating trying to find a supplier for these products. It does help putting links down below referencing amazon and oversees suppliers. Could you please provide S.A. supplier if possible. Thanks

Hi Mr X, thanks for your comment. It should be pretty easy to find where to purchase these products... just walk into (or google) mostly any of the large hardware stores and agricultural / irrigation stores in South Africa and you should see them. I bought most of my stuff from Turfag and Spilhaus. I don't have any affiliation with them hence not providing any links.

Great video. I'm looking for a similar system. Please assist me here I have a question, If you have hard water coming from your main supply, won't it deposit on your UV sterilizer thus reducing its efficiency since you have installed the softener after sterilization?
@GrantBurton
@GrantBurton 2 месяца назад
Hi, thanks very much. The carbon filters after the UV steriliser aren't for softening water, they mainly reduce odor and improve taste. The UV light needs to be replaced once a year, at which time the glass tube also gets removed and cleaned off any debris. Many people also install three filters before the UV steriliser... Something like a 20 micron sediment filter, then a carbon filter and then another 1 micron sediment filter and this arrangement also works fairly well. To soften hard water, you may have to install a water softener system but I believe these require a bit of maintenance (but I'm no expert on these water softening systems).

How do you raise the rain water PH, to prevent corrosion in the metal pipes of the house?

Hi, how about the pressure tanks, planning to get one 60l or 100l to prevent the pump from kicking in often
@GrantBurton

I’ve also wanted to install a pressure tank and give that a try but haven’t got around to it yet. The bigger, the better and also as long as you end up getting a good quality tank… I believe the bladders in the cheaper tanks tend to fail over time. The tank should help a lot for turning on the taps for short periods of time… like when washing hands, etc. If you install one, please let us know how well it’s working.

cool setup, i have one clean incoming city water. My filter housings have a gauge on top to show the life of the filter. once the pressure drops bellow a certain point I change the filter. Do you have any knowledge or opining on UV filter killing good bacteria with the bad. Maybe its healthier to not have the UV filter?
@GrantBurton
@GrantBurton Год назад
Hi Slavik, thanks very much. Those gauges are a nice addition 👍 Just my (non expert) opinion... I don't see how it can be healthier to not have a UV 'filter' if there are harmful viruses / bacteria in the water. Simply thinking about it... drink water with both good and bad bacteria and you are likely to get sick... drink water with no good bacteria and also no bad bacteria and you are not likely to get sick. I know I would choose the second option. Technically it's not as simple as this because, depending on the standards used, water classed as safe for consumption can contain a small amount of 'bad' bacteria (Total Coliforms / Heterotrophic Plate Count) but still fall within safe standards.
