Off-Road Fun-in-the-Sun Comparison (But Not a Real Comparison): Jeep Wrangler and Range Rover Evoque

Can you name a true Jeep Wrangler competitor? Based on pure mountain goat levels of climbing ability, sure, you have vehicles like the Chevy Colorado ZR2, Ford Raptor, and Ram Power Wagon. Each an excellent off-road vehicle in its own way, but none a small body-on-frame SUV with a removable roof, doors, and windshield.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser was the last vehicle to come closest to the Wrangler’s recipe, but even the Japanese Jeep has a fixed roof. No, there is nothing on the market that truly offers the Wrangler’s combination of attributes. But there is one unlikely competitor that comes pretty close.
With a four-wheel drive system, plenty of off-road-specific driving modes, and a roof that opens to the let the sunshine in, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible offers most of the Wrangler’s attributes, missing the body-on-frame bit. And six cylinders. But the Evoque also comes with a badge steeped in off-road history, so we took a Wrangler to lead the littlest Range Rover through some light off-road obstacles (light for the Jeep, anyway) to see if the Range Rover could even keep up.

The fact that the LEAST capable Land Rover can even remotely keep up with with the MOST capable Jeep just shows you how superior Land Rovers are to Jeeps.

I have to disagree somewhat about the on road ride quality/experience with the Wrangler. I just did a road trip from Wyoming to California and back in my 15 Wrangler Unlimited and my back feels great. Something I couldn't say about my previous cars (Q3 and 335i). Wind noise? Yes. More work to keep in a straight line? Yes. But the seats supported my body like a glove.

Weird that the parking distance sensors wouldn't turn off. They turn off fine on my 2013 Evoque (the non-convertible one). They automatically turn on when you put it in Reverse though, but you can just press the button again and they're back off. Wonder if that's something they changed in newer year models? Or it's different for the convertible? The regular Evoque without the Dynamic package also had a different front bumper that gives it a better approach angle. The bottom part of mine still fell off and I lost it somewhere in the sand. Haven't missed it though. Just a piece of plastic without any function (other than looks).

I don't really get the criticism that so many have with the Wrangler on the road. I definitely notice that I have to be awake when I'm using my parents' Jeep, especially in comparison to their Sierra, but it's far from "terrible". I drive for the experience, so having something that I have to actually pay attention to is hardly a problem, and even still, it's a pretty nice ride for what kind of a vehicle it is. If you want a true experience of a vehicle just floating around, try taking a VW Bus over 60MPH...

Take away from any given Autoguide review lately... pretty good, pretty well, pretty nice, pretty capable, pretty intuitive, pretty spartan, pretty plush... ect. In other words no strong feeling either way. Just vaguely come to your own conclusion of what we are saying. Don't make us have have to form real opinions.

I wouldn't buy either. I like my Jeep YJ better for both on and offroad. It is also cheaper to own/maintain. As well as easier to maintain.

Everyone talks about RR reliability but no one mentions how the Evoque is actually quite good in that regard. Is it expensive to replace a FUBAR front bumper? Well yes, but so is any luxury SUV lol people just like to drag every RR down because of the companies history and then end up treating each make and model like they're all the same. Simply not true and pretty narrow-minded. it's akin to saying every GM or Ford vehicle is unreliable when we all know that isn't the case, yet it seems regardless of the video, so long as there is a RR, everyone will pam "bu-but RR unreliable garbage" without even stepping foot in one let alone driving one of the recent models. Companies grow and get better, perhaps not with all models at the same time,but it does happen unless the company is going bust. And since LR has a 1 year wait-list for the Defender, I think they're doing just fine.

Who says you can only compare things that are in the same price range? I think comparisons across different classes of cars tend to be the most interesting.
