If you can recall watching motorcycle scrambles and trials on your black and white TV during the 1960s, then this is the book for you. Its a trip down memory lane as the author recalls boyhood journeys in his big brothers ex-GPO van to watch the stars in action, some of the worlds best, including scramblers like the Sharp brothers, Badger Goss and Ivor England, trials riders Gordon Jackson, Max King and the Kendalls, and great all-rounders like Ken Heanes, Johnny Giles and the American Bud Ekins. Not only does it include the star riders, but also the main British manufacturers of the time like BSA, Triumph, James, Greeves, Metisse, Cheney and Wasp, the latter two of which are still in existence to this day. However, the book isnt just about bikes its about the people and their stories from illustrious and successful careers on two and three wheels, which makes for a thoroughly interesting and captivating read.

I remember as a kid in the late 60's in Newport Essex we had Dave Nicoll a Greeves works rider living at the bottom of our road. I got an old 250 Greeves twin that I rode around the field and going to him for a pair of old knobbly tyres.

Best years in the history of the planet. Never ever to be repeated. If you weren't there then you will never know. I was there with my DOT. I met Alan clough, John Griffiths, Frank Yarwood, Ernie Greer. Fred Spann, John Done and many more. The cheshire centre had some great riders.

I remember as a child watching this guy ride in Scrambles in and around Exeter, Devon. All these years later I cannot believe the skill and courage the guy had, and as always with genius's in their field. He made it all look so easy.

Fabulous video..I raced motocross in 1972 & 1973 when the bikes were still quite a bit different & a European motocross bike was the coolest thing in the world. Ake Jonnson was my hero riding square barrel Maico's. Maico is still my favorite motorcycle. Thanks for the video...

Anybody out there make it to The Motorcycle Show in 1974 , held in London , I think it was in Earls Court , there was a specialised stand inside with a competition being held on it called " Balance The Bultaco " , entrants had to go for balancing a fantastic Spanish Bultaco trials bike upright on the stand,s podium without having the engine running or touching the floor , you could rock it around all angles using your own balance & weight & the bike,s brakes but that was all , we watched a guy do it for about an hour , & he definitely could . Real entertainment , he deserved to win . For the uninitiated , a Bultaco is an excellent Spanish bike having great frame dynamics that just seem to co-operate with you , & an engine that has got as much bottom - end power from dead as Donald Campbell,s Bluebird . Open that throttle too quick on one of these & you,re going flying off the back ! A man,s bike alright .

Merci pour cette belle rétrospective de l'âge d'or du moto-Cross , mon papa a été champion de Belgique fin des années 40 et début 50 , et il y eu aussi le trail lamborelle , Djoek , July , Jossart , André Piron , moto Matchless , Triumph , Greeves , Jawa CZ etc , on ne trouve guerre de documents malheureusement , encore merci.

Wow... when I was a young girl in the 1960s, I used to watch the scrambling on TV with my dad. I loved it more than any other sport and remember names like Dave Bickers and Arthur Lampkin. Wonderful xxx

Me too! You'd have Murray Walker or Colin 'utchinson commentating about the above 2 ^^^ + Brian Goss, Arthur Browning, Jeff Smith, Vic Eastwood, Dave Nicoll... Do you remember the bloke with 1 leg & crutches who always saw off the start? After it'd been on the telly me & mates would all go off to the woods nr where we lived on our pushbikes, but all racing would stop in time for us to be home for the footy results.

@@Tranmere59 Wow... wonderful memories and I remember all of those names you mentioned. I loved the speed and the way those guys dealt with the obstacles and MUD! To me, they were real heroes. Haha... football. I guess that it passed me by, despite being a Liverpool girl. The moto guys were really attractive to me, but the footballers seemed a bit unimpressive on a personal level. I watched the wrestling at 4.00pm with grandma... haha. Pure theatre. Thanks for sharing your memories. Very much appreciated.

my dad took me to just about every scramble in the south during the 60s and remember them as some of the most enjoyable moments of my childhood and still remember the names like bickers,smith,goss,lapking,eastwood etc.

Spent most of my childhood at scrambles in the wessex region, mother ran the roman trophy event at bleadon for many years, great times!

Great Stuff. l was a teenager in the 60s living in North Dorset and these guys certainly were Titans, hurling those big heavy 500 4 strokes round dangerous and mountainous tracks . Anyone who saw the Rickmans and Co hustling along, down and up Bulbarrow will know what l mean - flints flying off back wheels to add to the excitement. lt was scary just to watch. l knew Gorgon Francis the photographer, he was the lab technician at my school and a very talented free lance photographer. His pictures brilliantly catch the action and character of the riders. ln those days cometitors depended on pudding basin helmets, thin gloves rugby, shirts and body belts for protection. The more well off had leather jeans while also rans wore riding britches. My favourite riders were locals Jerry Scott on the Cheney Gold Star and Badger Goss on the works Greeves. Tragically Jerry died in a racing accident. Truly memorable days with legendary riders.

In my humble opinion, the golden era of off road motorcycle racing ended in 1968, when Yamaha introduced the DT1...it all went downhill from there..

Check out me here on my 500 Triumph Mettise 2013 at Narbeth 2ed 1st,2ed had a nice trophy too snaped the bike in half '14 leading the championship missed 3 races still had 4th - my uncle rode the 1960,s on various mounts John Parker. Just bought '73 Elsinor 250 doing a different class now along with twinshock/evo 500 on 480 CR

The evolution point was not the big two strokes, as such, it was when the road bike based product slip away 'cos the M-Cross field became dominated by specially built Japanese & to some extent Spanish built products. The BSA / Triumph / Matchless / AJS scrambles product were what 3" taller than their road going stable mates, with smaller mud guards, we let the grass growing under the rolling stone & then wondered where the nail in the coffin lid came from.

They don't look like giants to me, they look like your average size man. Who is the one that thinks they're giants? I can plainly see that they ARE NOT GIANTS !!! I'm sure everybody else who watches this can see the same thing. WHY OH WHY have I been misled.
