Cool Jimny. You are very clear, calm & collected with your off-road explanations. I appreciate that. Good info too. I have a 2021 Jimny and love it. Cheers from Mexico. Subscribed.
Great walkthrough, I wish i was more mechanically minded but unfortunately i need to pay someone to do all my mods for me! The lower gear ratio sounds great, and it might be something i consider after fitting a winch-but i will be going for something small like a 4500lb. In your newer videos I see you had lockers fitted, would love a video that explains more about them as they are a mod i want to do also. Its been great watching some of your videos, my Jimny is in getting its engine reconditioned, (getting an engineers certificate in Australia to fit a bigger engine was going to be far too expensive) so I miss it very much.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will put a video about diff lockers in the future plans. 😉 Also, I think it's way easier and cheaper to have a winch than to conquer every obstacle under your own steam (which requires tires, suspension, lockers, regearing and so on)...
@@The4x4Lab Did you find going down hill in low first on engine breaking a lot different to standard low range? Have got a JB74 Jimny and low 1st engine breaking is very poor, don't want to spend a lot of money and find it is not much difference. have you seen the Russian Jimny with portal hubs? really made a difference to ground clearance!
Your wheel and tire setup is definitely heavier in weight correct? Did you do anything for the spare tire? As in like reinforce the carrier, as well as the hinges?
I think you should check out some modifications of the Jimny and other vehicles done in Iceland. We do minimal lift on the vehicle but cut into the body and wheel wells to fit larger tires and still have space for suspension travel. That way we are able to fit up to 35" tires on the Jimny. Other larger trucks and SUV's are fitted with anything between 33" to 54" tires. One Ford 350 is now being equipped with 58" tires. But also we do snow wheeling with an aim to sink as little into the snow as possible so we try to fit larger tires where we can...
Yep, I've seen 4x4s there and they look awesome! However, the Jimmy's small 1.3l engine is struggling even with these tires... I suppose you're fitting bigger engines?
@@The4x4Lab Most are running original engines with some tinkering to the exhaust and of course lower gearing. Some are making modifications to their engines to up their power. Some have fitted other suzuki engines like 1,6 liter and one even has a 2,0 liter engine.
1.3 to 1.6 conversion seems to be very common form what i see on the internet. However, I dont know how's in Iceland but here in Bulgaria it will be difficult and expensive to get the necessary papers to be street legal again after an engine conversion.
@@The4x4LabLooks like a simpler process. Most privately owned vehicles are registered by their chassis number. Meaning you can switch pretty much everything out and make it street legal, that is if you build it in accordance to the regulations. One instance of creative thinking is a Jeep Wrangler body built on top of a Land Cruiser 60 chassis. Engine comes from Wrangler but almost everything else comes from the Toyota. He had to fabricate an extension to the rear of the vehicle to accomodate the longer chassis. Looks like a long Wrangler but according to authorities that vehicle is a Land Cruiser 60.
Well, what you have there makes way more sense to me compared to here, where the authorities check both the engine and chassis number... I get the chassis - to check if the vehicle isn't stolen; but why on earth the engine :D Anyway, I'm glad you liked the video and hope you will stay and I'll see you again on the channel for future videos :)
Great video. Nice well considered modifications. A bit more capable than most Jimmys I'd say. (definitely more than mine) I'm going to look and see if you have any videos on driving techniques.
I did have a look around and didn't find much that was Jimny specific. There are plenty of videos on making them more capable and lots showing what they can do but not so much on how. Something that concentrates on the driving differences between a light, small 4x4 like the Jimny compared to more traditional vehicles would be interesting I think. Thanks for replying and thanks again for the video. Good luck from Panama.
Hello mate, nice channel. Just a question for you, with the winch, it looks to be a factory front bumper just cut down. How do you mount the winch? I heard you say about the 3mm plate, but what does that mount to, just directly onto the chassis? Any info would be amazing. Thanks from Australia.
LOVE the little Jimny and the video, I am in BC Canada and need to import one of these or several, because Left hand Drive is available there, all the Japanese ones are Right hand drive, I think I can get them from Brazil only as Left hand, not positive on that though, still researching. I can get up to 2007 or older.
It's great to hear that even mates from North America sometimes enjoy a tiny vehicle! I think they are not that common over there, especially in the 4x4 world. :)
Thanks mate! To your question, one can get a winch plate like this www.jimnybits.com/media/catalog/category/jimny-winch-plate-1.jpg Personally, I went for a DYI version (hence the improvised tow points) offroad-bulgaria.com/filedata/fetch?id=5806328&d=1572113196
Thanks for this George, I am thinking of buying a Suzuki Jimny and slowly modify it for off road as well as daily driving, but I am being told a lot that it drinks a lot of petrol so not sure about it at the moment, especially with the petrol crisis going on and the prices already high as they are. What is your opinion on how much of petrol per week when driving it daily about 5/10km would cost?
The Jimny is small and light but I believe aerodynamics play a bigger role in fuel economy. That is why the Jimny drinks so much for such a small vehicle. My fuel consumption in the current configuration is 10 liters per 100 km (fixed driving)
Hi, George. Thanks for this video. I just bought Jimny and was lost in all information about it. Your video helped me to focus back again. Im experiencing some difficulties riding on sand with Jimny, i run simple winter tires 205 65 r15 now. Mostly when Im stuck, one side wheels are spinning, other dont. Possibly because of open diffs. What could you suggest? Lower tire pressure, or some more serious tires or just air compressed diff blockers?
Hey, I think you just gave me ideas for several future videos :D how to choose the proper tires, what air pressure to run for different terrains, how part-time 4wd works, and when do differential lockers help. Thank you! The quick answer to your question would be - lower tire pressure (~1 bar) and a rear diff locker.
Hello from South Africa. It you really want to do 31s on a Jimny look at 235 85 r16s it's the standard tyre size used on land rovers. Basically same width you have on that set up. But that extra 12mm higher axle height.
Nice video! We just bought our jimny, its a really good, small car. I will learn to drive on this. After learning we also want to make some modifications. Its a green soft top from 2001 Nice video, greetings from hungary😅
Hi George and congratulation for your fantastic Jimny! I have a question for you: with 24% Trailgear reducion and 30" tires, at which speed can you drive on highway? How many RPM?
4k RMP shows 90kmh, which in reality is 100 kmh. And that is pretty much the maximum speed that feels comfortable and still not crazy fuel inefficient.
Hi George, nice video. Have a question: do you have any drawing, sketch of front and rear axle protection covers? Can you share it? I want to have same ones for my Jimny. Did you make them by yourself or bought it ready to install? Regards from Poland!
G'day I love what you've done with your jimny, could you please tell me what tint your windows are what % darkness,I want to do the same with mine. Thank you.
Appreciated :) The rear windows are the darkest they had, I think that was 100%. The windows on the 2 doors, on the other hand, have a film with no tint but with a UV filter protection.
Nice jimny ! I got my jimny shortly after I got my drivers license and the jimny is stock , I will modify it and I am thinking about installing harness seats would you recommend?
Size and more importantly weight are crucial in every motorsport - offroad or on the road :) I like the viper too when it comes to speed... I used to have a Mitsubishi Eclipse 3G before.
Hey man. Nice car. I was wondering what mud arch guard do you have? (the black ones :) ) from where have you bought them or how are they made? Thank you.
Hey, thanks! Just welded a 2mm steel sheet to the inside and glued the otherside to the plastic. What i've done is probably not the best option but I have seeing the gaps that are left behind the front wheels.
Thanks for the support! Here is a link where it has been explained in details www.bigjimny.com/index.php/forum/7-jimny-technical/55627-how-to-fit-ignis-sport-recaro-into-a-jimny Cheers!
Hei man! What do you mean by reduction on transfer case in %. Do you change the transfer case lile others do on jimny by using a Samurai transfer case? Or do you just modify the interior wheels? Thank you!
Nice build. Does the K&N filter make any difference in car sound? I tried the cone filter once and it was sounding like a sports car. Best regards, Žan
No, not really I think. The sound is pretty much the same... Or at least I didn't hear any difference, because all I can hear are the mud tires humming :D
@@The4x4Lab Hi man, I know a little about the physics of gear reduction and its output result in theory. I wanted to know more about this kit you mentioned and its mechanical requirements and procedure and driving experience. Thank you for caring about the question.
Just bought a Jimny (2007 model). Im still in university so money is quite tight. What mods would you recommend when you are on a budget? I intend to only green lane with the jimny and don't do any hard core off roading for the next 2/3 years until i buy an other dailey driver. Also i question about reduction gears (for later on) a 24% reduction in high range, does that mean the car becomes 24% slower in 2wd as well. As in, 24% more rmp at the same speed on a high way?
Perhaps just get some All Terrain tires (one size up from stock) and enjoy your vehicle 🙂 Yes, it becomes 24% "slower" but when you have 24% bigger tires, it evens out.
Мерси много! Темата във форума придоби доста популярност и там подобренията се описват по подробно, но реших да пробвам и във видео формат да го има :) Ще оставя един линк тук за другите: www.offroad-bulgaria.com/showthread.php?t=223962
I would be very grateful if you could write me how much this pleasure cost you? I plan to buy myself a Suzuki Jimny and build it into something resembling your car.
Thanks, man! The wheels are 7-inch wide. I have tried with 8" (again with 9.5" wide tires) and it wasn't the best experience... The narrower the wheels the better :)
@@The4x4Lab Thanks for your answer friend. What is your opinion about rims 16 x 8 and tires 225/70 R16 with 25mm spacer? That's the set of my jimny from beginning but I thing it consumption more petrol on the road.
16" wheels give you more tire size options, so that's a good thing. However, I wouldn't use spacers (they are even illegal in some countries). Get the maximum negative wheel offset without spacers :)
Hello from Romania! I am please by your passion and willingness to share your experience with us. Thank you for this! I have 2 questions: first, for suspension lift I am thinking to 4xfourart 4" kit, can you give any opinion about it, reliability, effectiveness on&off road? second, for gearing, I plan to replace axles with diesel 3,417 ratio, use a Samurai SN413 transfer box with a new 4,16 low range gears set (-12%/-84%). For tires I plan to use 215/80/r15 for street and 215/80/r16 for off-road. Could you advise me on this combination of axles-TC gearing-tire size? Thank you, Dan!
Thanks for the support! :) 4xfourart are the yellow ones from Turkey, aren't they? I know 2 people have used many parts from this brand (bash plates, panhards, and shocks, etc) and they are happy with them. However, when I saw them myself... I think the build quality is poor (just my opinion). It doesn't fit properly, the welds are bad, the paint falls off... I don't know how long the shocks will last.
Hey man, one question: So i just banged my gearbox, lost reverse and its really hard to find gearbox for my G13b engine. But i do have another jimny with a m13a engine, do you know if it will bolt on directly? and will there be any different in ratios? im running 235s now, and different ratio would be good, as i cant use my 5th gear lol
Insurance rules will greatly vary from country to country, so I cannot help you with that (had no problems in Bulgaria though) ... P.S. thanks glad you enjoyed :)
It should be simple and effective procedure. However, the Vitara/Baleno engines that fit are now 30 years ago and it would be quite difficult to find a decent one.

I think that would require a whole other video to explain that topic. However, it usually comes down to unbalanced tires, bent wheels or worn parts like bearings...
If the wheels are dynamically balanced and there is still a wobble, check your universal joints in the drive lines, replace all needle rollers in tail shaft and front shaft.

The front radius arms are more important to make sure the wheel self centers better. The rear ones help to make the coil springs straight again but that doesn't really affect anything. (no spacer needed at the back)
Great review, thanks for sharing. My Jimny is relatively standard except for wheels/bull bar, removal or rear seats & insert false floor. They are a very reliable & capable 4WD. I use my 2001 soft top Jimny a lot in outback Australia & in the mountains here. Going to fit a long range tank (70 litres). A change to a lower gear ratio in for the transfer case will be done when I eventually change the clutch. I feel you. It's quite unfortunate that you only have big beasts :( Australians are more fortunate in this regard. Besides, aren't there very few 4x4s with a solid front axle in North America? No Jimny, no Patrol...
