One of my favorite things about off-road culture is the people specifically the entrepreneurs. There was never an “industry” for off-road racing until is was built by many small businesses who were passionate problem solvers. Off-Road radios were mainly for racers, a very narrow market, but when you solve a problem like “Communication” the whole world notices.
How do you talk to the person next to you in a loud vehicle?
How do you talk to your friend in the other vehicle?
How do you call for support? Help?
How do you rock out to your favorite music and still communicate?
Gregg Cottrell saw the problem and created solutions. He did not just re-sell other people's products, he began modifying and manufacturing all while building the Rugged Radios brand from the ground up.
When you go into his headquarters in Arroyo Grande it resembles more of an Apple Store than a warehouse. Open and airy with lots of smiling people ready to help you have a better off-road experience.
It sounds pretty simple because it is. Communication is key to having a better off-road experience no matter what vehicle you are in.
