In 2010 Tavo Vildósola with his father as his teammate became the first Mexicans to win the Baja 1000. The then-president of Mexico, Felipe Calderón had designated the year as “Año de la Patria”, or “Year of the Nation” because it marked the 200th anniversary of its Independence and the 100th anniversary of its Revolution. But Tavo was not from mainland Mexico, he was a son of Baja, A “Cachanilla” from Mexicali giving the win to Baja, opening the doors to other Baja-born racers to win the epic race.
