I used to work at Stewart and Stevenson in Sealy, Texas as a Welder and helped build these vehicles. I remember the company changed to Armor Holdings and then now its BAE Systems.
FYI, the broken headlight is a blackout headlight. It uses a 12 volt bulb and a green filter. Not IR but for night vision goggles. Also, the panel supports go in the small box with the double pins. You can reset the transmission computer and switch to atf to make it shift easier. Check the maintenance manual. Finally, don't raise the cab with door open. You'll warp the cab and it's not fixable.
I drove around 300 brand new LMTV's over a week when they where fielded at Ft. Stewart. The lowboy's delivered them to a giant field a few miles from main Camp and Maint had to relay them back to the units motor pools. We took a few on detours to see what they would do! All most got one stuck so yes we had fun. Hope you never need to do any electrical work on it...
I have a funny story about a truck like that. Once upon a time in Korea a infantry guy left his kevlar in the front seat, and when they flipped the cab it busted the windshield out. It was winter time and this happened out in the field. he had to drive it around for like a month and drive it back to base, lol.
Hey Wes I know it's been a year but, if you happen to know, what would a blank letter plate (maybe was painted over) and 11 for the numbers. does the 21 mean it's heavier?
Your "Turret Cover" is were a Ring Mount is fitted for those vehicle selected to mount either a FN M-240G, 7.62x51mm NATO (308 Win) or a Browning M-2HB .50 caliber 12.7x99mm heavy machinegun for convoy protection.
Watching you two dorks fumble and joke around this goofy vehicle was the most entertainment I've had with morning coffee in a while. The jokes just write themselves. Best quote of the vid? @18:16 Save the JP-8 for the theoretical helicopter that you'll be lifting this with. I think those lift eyelets would be more for putting this POS on a cargo ship bound for a peace-keeping mission in some Mid-Eastern or African shjthole. LMTV = Low Maintenance Toy Vehicle. Glad you plugged the podcast, I'll be tuning in for the non-stop laughs.
We remove and store the panels for loading palletized equipment, the framework can stay in place as long as your truck didn't have the jump-seats in the bed installed you're good to go. We also only use JP-8 (close to JET-A) if we're refueling from a military fueling point-- in the NG you refuel from a civilian fuel point about 70% of the time and run #1/#2 ULSD. 88-M
35' is the radius, from turn center to outside front corner of the cab. your wall to wall distance is really going to be about 65' (70 for continuous circles between walls, but you can clip one side by starting out flat against it and pulling away)
hey guys I did pause on the weight spec and they are some pretty serious numbers you have.I don't think any one alive would carry 8 tons of camping gear, but lol imagine the amount a cold beer you could carry ,never get thirsty again lol thanks for sharing ,kind regards Kerry
Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) I had guessed Light Military Tactical Vehicle. When the bed of the truck is 5 feet of the ground it's not a sissy ladder it is a necessary piece of equipment unless you can jump like Spud Webb.
Talking about the tires, a friend of mine says his father gets the military surplus tires because ther cheap. He said when a tire gets a nail or goes flat they tend to replace the whole set and the good ones go to the used surplus stores
This trucks were designed in Austria by Steyr Daimler Puch in Steyr. But they had to be built in the US, and Stewart and Stevenson was the partner doing that. But the quality wasnt the there as expected.
I work on these in the 82nd, we still use these all the time because they rock! Let me know if you need any help with wiring schematics or pneumatic schematics. Have fun 🤘🏼

When i got out of the active army, i joined the guard and reclassed from a 14S to become a medic. It was a year long, one weekend a month NG training course. I met a 82nd grunt in the course and we were buddies, at the 2 week field exercise before graduation, he asked me how to start a HMMWV. i laughed and talked shit thinking he was joking, but as an airborne 11B, he REALLY had never started a HMMWV. My MOS was based on the Avenger system, so i incorrectly thought every soldier had driven and maintained vehicles. It was a good life lesson.
hey guys love your video,Im a kiwi living in perth western Australia and do remote camping a bit.Great informative video guys keep up your awesome work mate.
Years ago Stewart and Stephenson used to be the rebuild facility for Detroit Diesel. They were in Houston Texas. With Detroit Diesel stopping of their two stroke diesels years ago they started building military vehicles
In our Iraqi LOG Base, a young lady drove her LMTV the wrong way off a cocrete slab & nosed down into a some muddy sludge covered with a generous layer of often damp River rock. (Our Batt. Commamder spread that slippery shit EVERYWHERE as 'eye candy', and, as it turned out, secondary projectiles for our nightly mortar barrages). ANYWAY, We ended up using our old reliable Duece to drag her truck back up onto the slab as the LMTV's front axle wouldn't engage at all, ultimately leaving her stranded with only one wheel turning. Personally I'd LOVE to get my hands on one with the command van, to camp with.
I love the seats for your kids. My Mom would have loved this truck for when my brother and I were teens. She would have thought, I could get an months load of groceries in the back of the truck!
Good basic informational video. Looks like a bit more work to go. I hope your buddy keeps going it. I flew Chinooks, so it is easily lifted by helicopter. Cheers!
looks like you have a few inches of adjustment on that wiper blade. you can get it to wipe more to the left (looking out). just detach it and reattach it a little further on in the travel.
Will not "RUN" is the Motor T techs saying "It'll run, but we don't jump them or do anything more than press the start button for auction sales". Didn't see that mentioned, may have been, just wanted to note it. Great video, looks like a great vehicle!!!!
Enjoyed your video!! This company made this truck for a number of manufacturers but the grill with the offset slats was common of the Steyr trucks from Austria. This is the the US version but with the Steyr grill
The front light that is broken is the a "black out drive light", just puts out a tiny bit of light for night maneuvers, don't run out of the cab tilt oil the system burns it as it works and its supposedly pricey.
damn nice truck , I''ve always loved military vehicles and currently own several retired military trucks ,, I DON'T own a Deuce yet but i have something better in 2001 before the military started recapping used trucks and rebuilding them i bought an original M977-A1 cargo truck it hadn't been driven in years ,,paid just $8000 for it and had a friend with a 50 ton wrecker tow it home for me 5 years it took to fully rebuild it ,, it's one of the most fun vehicles i have ever driven in 2015 i broke the original allison automatic transmission which led to another complete going over because i could not get a replacement transmission and mine was unfixable this resulted in my completely replacing the 2 stroke detroit diesel and the automatic transmission the engine i chose was a cummins ISX coupled to an EATON 18 speed autoshift ,,it made a massive difference in the way this huge truck drives ,the 16 liter cummins engine has 575HP and it's all automated even more fun when you start pulling something cause i haven't found a truck that can out pull me
Well done Buck I was looking at one of these on BAT "bring a trailer auction site" With one day to go Th current bit is $13,500. Just to give people a idea what they could buy one for. Now we know about the "S & S M1079 it's not a Unimog " all one word. tks
Can confirm, these trucks are badass off-road. Former 88M in the Michigan Army National Guard. These trucks were my bitch. Have 3 witnesses to me taking my 1078 LMTV airborne going down-hill at steep grade, landed straight, and kept chugging without a hiccup. Sure as hell woke up my co-driver.
Love it! Thanks for the thorough overview. Quite an amazing and capable machine. I'm going to have to look into this...I wonder about registration/licensing (the vehicle and the driver) and insurance. I guess it shouldn't be any different from any other industrial truck. The machine gun would be a nice option. Very nice job fitting center seats in there.
It is a FMTV which is Family of Mobile Tactical Vehicles made by Stewart and Stevenson. It is a company out of Texas if it still exist. That truck is the version of the two and half ton and the six wheel version is the five ton. The fuel is diesel, JP8 is the military designation for diesel fuel. The horn is weak for a large truck.
I have put many miles on LMTV's . Most notable experance was when i had one brake its transmission with less than 6,000 miles on the odmeter. I drag raced a 1078 with my M35A2 and left him in the dust. Not that eather truck accelerate very fast not fast enough to make the MP's think your trying to race to 35mph.
my father worked at the factory where that truck was built from some time in the mid to late 90s to the day they closed the factory he was one of the mechanical engineers that made that truck happen great trucks grew up around them and me and my dad plan to own one in the future I'm sure he would love this vid the next-gen after the S&S model like u have armor holdings own the factory and later around 2007 to 2010 BAE systems own the factory but through the company changes the same guys drew up and built those trucks
Thank you, i was thinking of putting this flatbed on my 68 IH Loadstar 1700 4x4 but the original plan was an extreme off road camper. I couldn't find that box or its name so now maybe i can still pull it off.
You should take that rig on Trooper Tyree's 2022 Great Smoky Mountains Convoy in October. See HISTORY in MOTION magazine 'Events' listing of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association.
LMTV = Light Medium Tactical Vehicle. BTW: The Unimog can go 1.2m (47")deep into water, and there's an armoured version of it called "Dingo" in the german Bundeswehr. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATF_Dingo
But the Unimog was invented mainly as a civilian vehicle. The military use came later, and it's still much in use in the civilian sector. It was invented as a multi-purpose vehicle for farmers (tractor), coal suppliers and so on. Unimog = Universelles MotorGerät which is literally translated "Universal Motor device". And it's really universal, for example you can use it on railway tracks or add several tools on it like snow blowers, jaw crusher or lawn mowers: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2c/2Mercedes-Benz_Unimog_mit_M%C3%A4harm.jpg
If someone else hasn't already suggested it, the tailgate panel i believe is stored on the headboard of the bed (appears to be channels on the headboard for that purpos). Thats how the MTVRs do it and id be suprised if the idea wasn't stolen right off the FMTVs
Bro, that's a screamen the trucks built to military spec, so you know what your getting, The cat C7 had two problems first being the HUEI hydraulic activated electronic injection, not the best design ever, but yours is mechanical injection, half the problem solved, the other issue is the ecm can half a short life. But all in all a solid motor that's been around a long time first 3116 then the 3126 that was replaced by the c7, If this is truly a mechanical pump you should be able to turn it up with Cat software and get more ponies out of this engine.
The goodyear tires on that are rated up to 87mph under load. The Michelin XZLs like your spare are only rated for 60 mph. But the Michelins have cooler tread and better offroad traction.
Is the winch hydraulically operated and not off the pto? Why is it so far back? Just so it can pull from the back as well? I've seen that on some Russian trucks and always wondered
As a big fan and future owner of a Unimog, DON'T insult either truck please!!!! Both trucks have their strengths and weaknesses, HOWEVER, the Unimog can do MORE than the S&S.
I will however say, that you MUST know what you're doing when traversing off-road with these trucks, as, unlike the old Deuce and a Halfs... these are VERY top-heavy, and will tip without the slightest warning... especially if you have any load on the back. Almost rolled one on an expressway exit-ramp after installing a mobile-office compartment on the back... basically turned it into a giant mobile home without amenities... and I was going well below the "recommended" truck speed limit for that turn. When you think you're in control with these trucks... you're not. Just assume your cab latch will fail at any moment and you'll flip over the front-end. So yeah... the biggest thing I can tell you... is to make sure your cab latch and jack are always functional, and that your limit chains are always in good condition... because if they're not... well... let's just say it's going to be about 40x more expensive than it would be to service and/or replace every 3 months or every off-road trip/as needed... Basically... look at it wrong... and it'll go face-flat before you can understand what is happening.
My M923A1 goes flat out at 60 mph also at around 8 mpg and the tire speed rating is printed on the tire sidewall and if you open the fuel screw you may burn a piston and or burn you tranny. There are alot of truck rollovers when our brave service people try to hot rod these trucks, You mite be surprised how easy it is to flip. The ABS is a maybe on a good day. Good video.
Is an amazing truck I have the luck to drive an Unimog when I was in the army also Engesa is brazilian truck looks like yours .and they are amazing real 4X4 they can go anywere .thanks for an amazing video
Great tour! I know this is an older video but I want one of these things so bad!! Like every other jackass, I want to make an overland rig and head south. I spend a fair amount of time racing down there and dream of just going down there and maybe points even further south for an extended period of time.
I drove around with him for about 20 minutes and we got numerous honks and waves. It didn't hit me right away why they were doing that, LOL. Thanks, Scott!
