No one will ever convince me that this is not one of her best songs. The background vocals during the verses alone are incredible. I hope she uses hard-hitting drums like in the pre-chorus again in the future.
Alot of people Say ultravio is her best work, but this right here is the Real shit, the incredible dark lyrics, the pure genius production, and of course those majestic violons.
That's because she's definitely a demented angel. She used her body and looks to ride to the top and now she's singing about it, it's beautifully eerie.
It's so interesting how young and innocent she sounds while singing "I'm your little scarlet, starlet..." But then the rest of the song it sounds very mature. I love that contrast.
Mm…not that she is innocent but mature at the same time..its more like…she is very mature and smart. She's seen quite a bit throughout her lifetime, so she knows how to get her way and all that. BUT she has the qualities of an innocent girl (Alt. sweet voice, beautiful, soft looks) and thats good to have. She can get what she wants with that "innocent" side. Its like a cover up for the "bad girl" It actually comes in handy if you ask me ;*
My dad is a 50 year old man, he is the leader of a biker gang and always dresses in black with chains, has a lot of tattoos and is very into metal and hard rock. Oh, and also he is the biggest Lana del Rey fan I've ever met
It's simple, because she hits those places, real, gritty, sexy, no BS and not afraid frankly to curse and be real. Metal above everything in my world, but yes, addicted to her music and has little to do with her looks. Music that affects comes from many places.
i love the quote from Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita, “light of my life, fire of my lions.” The protagonist refers to Lolita this way often throughout the book. Basically the whole song is a Lolita aesthetic and theme anyway, but I still adore that she uses an actual line from the novel Lolita to match with it.
Favorite things about this song: 1. The way the tone of her voice changes along with the story 2. The way she sounds confident, yet fearful at the same time 3. The way she says "Scarlet, starlet" and "Harlot, Scarlet" 4. "Says it feels like heaven to him" 5. "sorry 'bout it" 7. "You never looked as beautiful as you do now with my man" 6. the last "You are my one true love"
People have probably pointed this out before, but the noise in the background sounds like a playground/kids playing. In lolita, it ends with him hearing these kids playing and he realises he stole Dolores childhood so she never got to have that. I always thought that was a really cool reference
I love the fact that when she says "...fumes, says it feels like heaven to him," she sounds kinda like she's disgusted. It sounds like she's rolling her eyes and spitting the words back. I love the way it sounds so fucking much.
I´ve finished that movie literally 5 minutes ago and the first thing I did was listen to this fantastic song XD I was like man this line sound really familiar to me XD and it was a Lana songs XD (sorry 4 my english)
The way the song progresses from her just wanting to have a sugar daddy and the chic-ness and diva-ness to her falling in love and realising that he is all that she has left and loving him is absolutely genius(feels like heaven to me ;)
the first time i heard this song, i thought it was about a young woman infatuated of an older man, and asking him to take her out to have fun. but then i realised that in fact is about a young woman who is about to be imprisoned, and this is a desperate call for help directed to an older fellow criminal (probably a dealer) who is the one infatuated of her, and she is using her charme to convince him to help her flee town. she is trying to manipulate him, when she is talking ABOUT the man, she uses her mature voice, but when she is talking TO the man she uses her childish voice, to make him think she is a little girl in trouble, but yet she tells him what to do (do what i want/gimme the gold/pay us), and eventually they do leave town. i love her story telling.
Patrick Fazeli it kind of is, because she is using him, but he is getting something is return, which is her company. both parties are using each other, but she has to pretend not being aware of this as a part of her manipulation. she leads him to think he is in charge, when in reality she is in charge. she is facing jail time, there is nothing left to lose for her, so he is taking the entire risk.
Anyone else think this is maybe her best song lyrically? It takes the same sort of thing she went for with songs like Video Games and Blue Jeans, as in the dependent dysfunctional relationship idea, but here she just expands it until it feels like a full story. Oh and she manages to chuck in a handful of Lolita references as usual.
The shouting at the background (I could barely make out some but some sounds like "up here!") adds such an interesting layer. It confuses me if it's her desperately looking for help or giddily inviting someone. Either way it feels like there are demented undertones which fits perfectly with a demented love song and that's one of many reasons I think Lana is an incomparable brilliant artist.
Is it possible that Lana is my favourite singer, just because I can't hate or even "don't like" any of her songs? The lyrics, the rithme and her voice are always so well together! WOW ...I'm just glad I found her
Okay so I did some research she does write her own songs or co-writes, like all artists they will colab together to create something but her songs are self written or co written,
Smells_like_teen_ idles It's a good book, stunningly written. it's just been romanticised, Nobakov would probably turn over in his grave if he knew haha
Smells_like_teen_ idles at first, I was very doubtful about reading the book but then I abolutely fell in love with it and there was only like one sentence that made me feel a bit disgusted but it was totally worth reading, it's one of my most favourite books
She portrays his ex lover as an old man; that doesnt mean her ex was an old daddie, its just a metaphor. And she just keep embracing that idea (from Born to Die concept) in her latest album (Ultraviolence - Shades of Cool, for example).
this is one of the most difficult songs I ever had to sing because she goes from a deep voice at the start then to the highest pitched voice ever at the end
"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-Lee-ta: tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."
She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita. Did she have a precursor? She did, indeed she did. In point of fact, there might have been no Lolita at all had I not loved, one summer, an initial girl-child. In a princedom by the sea. Oh when? About as many years before Lolita was born as my age was that summer. You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, exhibit number one is what the seraphs, the misinformed, simple, noble-winged seraphs, envied. Look at this tangle of thorns.
It shines. The story, the persona. Pure Americana. Film noire, 50s LA. That an individual could have created this vision of a woman's life is beyond me. An x-ray of the soul in all earnestness, and yet, it's capricious, spurious, mischievous. The lost woman as hero. And a triumphant Lana as songwriter and queen. The live version is polished, brilliant and captivating. When will she star in a David Lynch film? They must both humble themselves.
Love this part! "Likes to watch me in the glass room, bathroom, Chateau Marmont Slippin' on my red dress, puttin' on my makeup Glass film, perfume, cognac, lilac Fumes, says it feels like heaven to him" Queen Lana
this song will forever bring tears to my eyes. from her amazing voice, to the sick beat, the beautiful orchestra (which is my favorite) the lyrics make me imagine an amazing rich gangster love story, i can imagine all the places she sings about I LOVE LANA
@104252952212958453931 Lolita (or Dolores Haze) it's a character from Vladimir Navokov novel "Lolita", She's a 12-year-old nymphet and basically the song it's about that.
Not a fan of Lana Del Rey, but musically, vocally, structurally and production-wise it's one of the most interesting, unique and unusual songs I've heard
I don't think this song is ONLY about Lolita, there are various things in here that Lolita actually could never do; there's references of the girl in this song using alcohol, partying, running around town, being chased by 'something', and obviously her 'old man' does/dabbles with drugs from the 'cocaine heart' thing, not to mention being a 'thief', or a bad man that she says in a way that doesn't just stop at him liking little girls. I think this is Lana's song for herself, with a Lolita fantasy to it. I'm not saying Lana was ever a 'Lolita', I don't know about that, but Lana has already told of her fixation on older men, many of her past boyfriends got in trouble with the law and did drugs, went to jail; I can't remember if she said she's ever been at odds with the law herself, but she did reference being a troubled/alcoholic teen, and that may have had her cross paths with authorities. That line with the 'cause he know I'm wasted' doesn't really fit the fictional Lolita, but it does fit Lana's teenage self; plus the 'Face'n time again on Rikers Island' indicate a past record with jail time; I don't know if Lana's been arrested before, but that's just more evidence that she's talking about (possibly a fictional version of)herself, and not Lolita. Let's not mention the many modern/Californian things in Lana's songs that the characters of Lolita wouldn't/didn't have access to. Yes, the book did influence this song and many others, it's her favorite book, I guess, but I think Lana has written her own little Lolita 'book' with these songs, and not just singing about the actual published story; I believe Lana's Lolita story is a dramatization of herself staring as Lolita and ex(es) staring as Humbert/'Old Man'.
I love the different tones of Lana's voice, the melody of the song, the changes in the rhythm, and just this song all together should be played for hours on a loop.
I know people believe this is Harley Quinn but this song as well as others are based on "Lolita". This songs chorus is (light of my life, fire of my loins) is the opening for the book. In fact the whole album is based on lolita.
One of the Greatest Songs Period. The structure, production, Story Telling…It Just transports you into it! The greatest songs of all time do just that, and I think this is one of them 😎❤️
