For fun, wit and exuberance, it would be hard to find anything in ballet literature that compares to the Gaîté Parisienne. An ironic homage to Parisian café society, which takes off in a bright and lively clip, lightly launching one dazzling musical motif after another. Using the delightful melodies of composer Jacques Offenbach and the book by Count Etienne de Beaumont as ingredients, Leonide Massine, a world-renowned dancer and choreographer, created the ballet in 1938 for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. This production, which translates all the effervescence of Offenbach's music into dance, was a spectacular success and the ballet continues to be enthusiastically received.

This production, which translates all the effervescence of Offenbach's music into dance, was a spectacular success and the ballet continues to be enthusiastically received. La Gaîté Parisienne is set in a fashionable Parisian restaurant where, as the curtain rises, the waiter is animatedly preparing for the night's activity. First to arrive is the saucy Flower Girl, followed by three cocodettes (girls of easy virtue) and their escorts who launch into a lively mazurka. But the girls are quickly abandoned when the charming glove saleswoman makes her appearance, men crowding around her as if she were a princess. Then, to enter the café, there is the comical and greedy Peruvian, who always carries his luggage, so eager is he to enjoy the legendary delights of Parisian nightlife. Although most of the girls laugh indulgently at his antics, the glove salesman (whom he loves) chooses to ignore him. But when the elegant baron arrives and rejects the flower girl, the glove salesman is delighted by his attention. The increasingly tipsy Peruvian is briefly entertained by the cocodettes, but is pushed aside by a group of arrogant soldiers, who waste no time in conversation. The next couple is La Lionne, the city's reigning beauty, and her admirer, the Duke, who jealously watches her flirt with one of the officers. Meanwhile, the glove salesman teases the Baron by feigning a sudden interest in the Peruvian. A situation must inevitably blow up, as it does. The Duke and the Officer fight over the Lioness, the Baron and the Peruvian over the Glove Salesman. The resulting melee proves too much for the Peruvian, who takes refuge under a table. When peace is finally restored, the Baron and the Glove Seller - now reconciled - dance, expressing their love. The other guests return to their romantic moods, and the café returns to its normal pace, enhanced by the extravagant dancing of the Can-Can girls. Like the Baron and the Glove Seller, the Duke and the Flower Girl, the Officer and the Lioness also happily associate. Only the Peruvian is left to his own devices and sulks.

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY🤣🤣🤣I am familiar with this set of Offenbach's pieces, his music is very happy and fun (if you look at his photo portraits, he always smiled), very cartoonier and circus, it reflects very well the happier spirit of not only Parissians but French in the era of operettas and vaudeville, I also associate it with classic movies and cartoons like Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry, to the point that I feel like I heard certain melodies in my childhood, what better way to end than with his 2 most enduring pieces, the "Infernal Galop" from Orphée aux Enfers and the Barcarolle from "Les contes d'Hoffmann" (memories from La vita è bella). What better than this excellent quality recording with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conducted by Felix Slatkin, the most suitable for this type of music. Also HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳🥳🥳
