Officer's Cabin Onboard a Cruise Ship

Why not

Throughout my four years of University and leading up to my navigational officers exam, i wondered what life would be like onboard a cruise ship. After looking on youtube i was shocked to find very little about what living conditions were like onboard . So i decided to make a video to show everyone what an officers cabin is like onboard a cruise ship. Obviously cabins will differ from company to company but it will give you a rough idea of what to expect.
Im hoping to make more videos about life onboard a cruise ship, please help me by commenting on aspects of cruise life that you would like to know more about. As soon as i have the time i will do my best to make a video that answer those questions.
If you liked the video you may be interested in my other video that shows what a cadet cabin is like onboard a container vessel: • CADET CABIN
Thanks for watching.

For us landlubbers who enjoy cruising I wish the cruise lines would offer a cabin like this for singles.

A few newer ones do, but 99% of the time you have to pay "double occupancy"
@burningblue1254

NCL has solo cabins so does HAL, and RCL. Sometimes paying the single supplement is cheaper than the solo cabins because they are in such demand.

Richard i found out yes, inside solo cabin on Ncl was more expensive for me then paying for double balcony! cabin, weird. So i choose balcony of course. Something is still wrong with the cruise lines regarding solo cruisers and balance of cabins.

hee hee! Where to begin!? I am excited with this video as I LOVE architecture and well, there is ALOT I noticed in this ship cabin I love. First, I want to preface by saying when my wife was alive back in 2009, she always went on and on about going on cruises since she went with her family in what is called a shared cruise? I never had seen a cruise ship before until recently as in recently in the last month.. on youtube. She passed away in 2009 and we never got to go on a cruise together like she wanted. I have experience with seeing the inside of NAVY ships and ferry boats and a ship used for Religious humanitarian aid called Mercy Ship Anastasia. As you can imagine, they look like well, steel and paint Ships, duh! Nothing fancy, no tiles,fancy wood work or fancy lighting. So I always thought and pictured in my mind, cruise ships all looking similar to THIS cabin and areas in the CREWs quarters! Ha! I saw videos about cruises gone terribly wrong, and THAT is when I finally see a floating hotel?? What!? So yeah, all new to me. Now about this cabin sir! The electrical sockets and switches I noticed right away since I love that stuff. They are Bticino MATIX brand and series. They sell them in Puerto Rico where Im from. Th never found the German ones, only the US sockets. The wood trim around the crown of the room or crown molding is very nice, looks like Oak! I like the details near the door ways. The ceiling looks to be like ceiling tiles which I am all about, and the floor in the bathroom looks to be fake tiles in plastic? I like the wall mount toilet with the single wall mount toilet flusher there. Looks to match the Sockets and switch plates which is nice for me. The medicine cabinet in the bathroom looks to be completely mirrored even INSIDE the cabinets! THAT is new.. Never seen that detail. Love it. But the thing I love most and I wish you could have shown better, are those 2 big SQUARE PAN LIGHT FIXTURES! I am all about those Squared Lights! My house will have them all over as I am currently remodeling. This cabin tour has now given me some nice ideas. Thankyou for the video and I look forward to more!

Quick tip for you. If you haven't done so already. Get on Amazon a buy a couple of short length extension leads that suit your electrical plugs. Then buy a couple of plugs that fit the sockets in your cabin (or go see the electrical engineers and ask if they have any). When the extension leads arrive, cut the plugs off and wire the plugs that you bought onto them. Get them tested for use and no more faffing about finding adapters. I suggest one extension with a US plug and one with a euro plug. That should do you for everything as these days all small electrical items are 100-240V and 50/60Hz.

You get your uniform once you board the ship, that is one of the first things you will do. Cruise companies also provide you with slip resistant work shoes for work, you will get white and black pair - outdoors and indoors, although I highly recommend you to get your ship mailing address and order slip resistant shoes from Amazon for around 35$ ~ 45$ a pair as soon as you board. Shoes cruise companies provide you with are terrible and you will have hard time staying comfy more than 10min in them after ~ 2months onboard.

Atma Kali for one thing they are most often out of range. And ships have 1200 plus crew. So how many trips exactly would it take to bring them all off the ship? And contrary to what people think, helicopters do not actually land on cruise ships, they hover over the helipad and winch the person up in the rescue basket. It is actually dangerous, because of the static charge.

thank you! 1. what different between third mate and junior mate? 2.if your watch is 12-16, when you should arrive at the bridge? 3.I saw on RU-vid channels that some officers are always sitting in chairs in front of the radar and plotters, others are behind some monitors. 4 officers and 1 sailor-helmsman are on watch. Do they have no right to get up and carry out not only electronic surveillance?
@fatviv2194
@fatviv2194 4 года назад
1. on my cruise ship third officers were the junior officer, any officer above a third officer is considered a senior officer. 2. if your watch is at 12-16 you should arrive on the bridge at least 15 minutes early to ensure that you familiarise yourself and to allow your eyes to adjust when taking over at night. 3. you do spend a lot of time sitting down but you stand whenever you like. before answering the rest of your question its important to undertand manning levels. the number of officers on the bridge is dependent on the level of hazards. hazards being amount of traffic, visibility and weather conditions if there are a lot of hazards red manning is set and four positions need to be filled if there is few hazards then yellow manning is set and three positions need to be filled if there are very few hazards then green manning is set and only two positions need to be filled. red, yellow and green manning still require to lookouts/sailors to be on the bridge. Green manning: with two officers officer one: the officer who is the co navigator is allowed to move freely around the bridge during navigation Officer two: the officer whois the navigator is unable to move from his position as the controls are at his station. the control position of the ship can never be unmanned. during navigation. yes; they have the right to get up and carry out other forms of surveillance

Great question's. In 1998 before 911 got married on the Grand Princess. Biggest cruise ship then. We choose Princess because the CAPTAIN married you at SEA, not along side pier like other cruise ship do. I asked the Captain could we take wedding pictures on bridge. For just me and wife and best man & Woman. He said why NOT he had never been asked that. I spent 6 years in Army in a 45 TUG ( Yes the Army is full of small support craft) mostly at that time (LCM-8s) we went up to bridge wing and got great wedding pictures on Bridge. They did have a Open house for bridge when in port ( again this was before 911) ships officer explaining everything. They had a large area on starboard side by Radio room. That was set up with a computer control vessel handling simulator. So the officers could practice DOCKING the cruise ship at the Ports we visited very real set up on computer board, with ship. Just like the maritime schools have. When we had to drop the hook at one stop. The Captain turned the ship using thrusters to keep the ship to shore life boats ( passage carrier) out of wind made it calm on side were passages boarded. There was this neat dock that folded down for boarding shore vessels. Are Captain Retired from Princess but still did engagement with them to Alaska to be narrator on History of State. He would talk on 1- MC and have group speaking tours. He sent us a very expensive Painting of the Grand Princess with his signed name on Picture. The cruise Director kept in touch with us after cruise because we got married on board. The head Purser was such a great guy. Very patient with us. The photo shop made sure all are pictures were just Right. Because we had so many in are cruise group. The Captain did a special meet and greet time with us. The ship rocked so much that in sky walker lounge on very stern, high up. The crew members had to hold wedding cake, before we both cut it for picture. The cake would have been on floor. They took that big BAR area down on NEWER Princess ships because it was a big drag, they were burning to much fuel. Newer Princess ships got a big make over on stern.

A very interesting video. I was a Radio Officer during the mid 1960's till 1970 on deepsea trawlers and the size of this cabin is as big as my Radio Room and adjacent cabin combined. My cabin consisted of a bunk bed and I also had a port hole which tended to leak in very rough weather which was the case most of the time. I shared with the Skipper the bathroom and sink, (no shower) onboard the ship and I only had one small locker for clothing which smelt heavily of diesel which travelled throughout the ship when at sea. Many happy memories though. I have done several cruises as a passenger with various cruise lines which I love. All officers on trawlers had single cabins with bunk beds. My cabin was behind the bridge as I always had to be on call any time of the day or night for emergencies and normal watch keeping. Thank you for posting this.

It depends on which shipping company you are with, which standard you have. I have been on a Scandinavian smaller tanker that we can compare with. The toilet is about the same, and it looks the same to everyone on board. The refrigerator is half-height for everyone, it sits under the desk and is 60 cm wide. The size you showed is roughly in the middle between the crew and the lower officers. No double cabins are used on board except for temporarily visiting repairmen. Senior officers such as Captain and Chief Mate have one that you showed as a sleeping cabin and then a day cabin which is 4 times larger than that. Everyone on board (including the crew) has satellite TV which has a central gyro-stabilized antenna and locks on the satellite even if it is rolling. In addition, there is a CD player with a library of several hundred DVD films. There are 6 new DVD films on board every month and these are often films that have not yet been released to the general public for sale. You had to wash your clothes yourself but the washing machine is in a space completely outside the cabin so it's only a few steps away with a dryer on top. You get your cabin cleaned every day and the bed linen changed every week. The crew gets to clean themselves but gets 2 hours of overtime each week for it. The cabin door has a hatch at the bottom of the door that can be opened from the inside and gives the opportunity to crawl out through, in the event of a fire. Everyone has a jacket and trousers that are approved by firemen to use, but it's a bit special because it's a tanker and you don't have to rush in and change in the event of a fire, but everyone who works can rush straight to their fire stations and be ready for are used as soon as they put on the air tubes. When it's hot, you wear overalls (different colors depending on the position) and the fire suits are ready to just jump in. We don't wear caps, but everyone has to wear protective helmets White for officers, blue for crew and red for visitors.

how many navigators in cruise ship:Captain,Staff Captain,...???
@fatviv2194
@fatviv2194 4 года назад
The usual staff structure onboard cruise ships is as follows: Captain x1 Staff Captain x1 Senior First officer more commonly known as safety officer x1 First Officer x1 Senior Second officer x1 Second officer x 1 Third officers x3 Extra Info: cruise ships are usually dual watch-keeping meaning that a senior and a junior officer are on watch . Example: first officer & third officer 1 - they are on the 4-8 watch Senior Second & third officer 2- they are on the 8-12 watch Second officer & third officer 3- they are on the 12-4 watch

Really great video. Could you tell me how to become deck cadet or apprentice at cruise ship? And i heard that it would be difficult for asian become cadet or apprentice or officer on cruise ship, is this true? I appreciate if you would answer it. Thanks
@fatviv2194
@fatviv2194 4 года назад
Two main options in the UK to become a cadet Go to a maritime academy/ maritime college such as ( Warsash Maritime Academy ) and get sponsored by a company who will pay for your education. Shipping companies essentially get tax breaks from the UK if they take on cadets, explaining why they convert your tuition fees for free. Go to a university such as Plymouth University and take an MCA accredited degree course, whilst attending try and get sponsored by a shipping company. it is important to note that you will NOT get your tuition paid for by the company but will instead be paid a small monthly salary around £650 pounds. i am not an expert about other nationalities getting sponsored, all i know is that it is more difficult to get sponsored. i think its because companies only get the tax exemption if they can prove that your a British resident. If you already have your OOW licence then you should be able to work on cruise ships no problem. However unfortunately its become standard practice for a lot of companies to hire mostly British and Italian officers, i really dont know the reason for this. I have worked on cruise ships for just over a year and have only met one asian officer, 1 American n 1 Swedish and 1 kiwi. however i cant keep count of the British and Italian officer ive worked with because there have been so many.

@@fatviv2194 thanks for your answer and giving me insight. I was a cadet on tanker and i am just got my coc licence. I am from indoneisa. So it is difficult for me to go through cruise company as officer, as i know, here in indonesia the agency only send the rating or hotel department and non officer. When i went to agency they offer me as a jr seaman even i got coc lisence.

Much nicer than the my stateroom in the Navy as an Ensign. I had a stateroom with 3 other officers and I had to sleep in a bunk bed. Since my room had a head and close to the Combat Information Center, the other officers felt free to walk through my room to use the head.

As an ER/ICU/Trauma Nurse that works 12 hour shifts...7pm-7am, I ended up with only sleeping 2-3 hours a day. And yes, it causes what is called "Delayed Phasic Syndrome", by sleep specialists. People don't realize how your body reacts to your body sleep clock being totally disrupted. When you are working a "graveyard shift", it is totally nighttime dark outside. So, when you see that it is night, you mind goes to the fact that you would normally be sleeping, like everyone else is. That visual perception tells your brain that you should be asleep, thus, you become extremely tired. Graveyard shift is extremely difficult on a body, and your mind. It can take 2 weeks to a month till your body and mind adjust to such working hours.

Bathroom looks bigger than the ones in standard passenger cabins. There should be a better of close and far views. I found myself getting almost claustrophobic with your camera so close to the desk without a context view from across the room.
