I think since he seen the reaction to the ending of the show he is nervous in a way to finish the story. Bc no matter what he does many people will love and hate it. The shows aren't important imo the stories are. Hoping we get atleast one more novel before he calls it quits
I think its partly because he wrote himself in a corner and need at least 4 more books to finish it. not 2. And I also think he has adhd so motivating himself to do 1 thing while he wants to do other things it hard or even impossible.

The guy writes what he likes to writes, or what can give him a paycheck. A Song of Ice and Fire already have an ending in the TV version, so I can see why he could be less interested to continue the book series. It is frustrating that he will not finish his book series, but at the same time he does not own us books.
While I’m convinced Winds will be released, I’m not so sure about A Dream of Spring. At the very least he needs to name an heir to finish his story if his watch ends soon
He is 74 years old… It is physically impossible to do all of these shows and all of these books even if he was 54. Robert Jordan protected his brand when he knew he was sick and may not ever get to finish Wheel of Time. But he was smart enough to record the story on tapes… To allow a selected author to finish the story. If GRRM actually wants to finish all of these stories… Assuming he knows how it ends… He needs to start getting an outline together and enlist other authors to help. Heck… Hire ghost writers now. Haha. His brand is massive and successful and there's no way one person can do it by themself.
He is rich and old, he wants to enjoy the rest of his life the way he like it. I think he just lost interest to the story. Perhaps reaction to the Game of thrones final season broke his heart.

Ah well, it's been over a decade since the 5th book. It was out of my mind for a while till I saw this video pop up in my recommended list. I hope he has a writer he works with that he could just tell to adapt at least a dream of spring in his vision. Granted it wouldn’t be he writing which will blow. But if he truly has a different ending (which I know for a fact he does) he could finish winds of winter and just have another writer write a dream of spring
ASOIAF could have been a cultural icon that lasted generations, but all it will be is a television show with one of the worst endings in TV history, and an unfinished book series.

GRRM has stated that he does not want any other author to finish ASOIAF after his passing. His fame and fortune is only due to the support and patronage of his fans around the world. It's a big middle finger to the fandom of the book readers.
@@jkuebler89 not the GOT fans that's for sure xD. He has no obligation whatsoever to finish anything. He was rich before the first GOT book. He created something that people liked. It's his own world and he has created more than 10 books for it. If he doesn't want to finish it its his own right and noone can say anything about that.
And while I'm sure he has an estate he cares greatly about...people forget that he doesn't have any children. Thus, less incentive to "compromise his integrity" (by having another author finish up the story). Maybe he'd have done that for his kids, for financial & legacy reasons. But, he doesn't, so he's probably not gonna bother. Although, it goes without saying, his estate will be just fine lol. It's filthy rich even if it never releases another book.
Truthfully, I never believed he would ever finish the Winds of Winter. He allowed the story to get away from him, the list of characters is so long he's had to make notes for each one. Then his age. We are living longer, but there's no guarantee his mind will remain sound.
i give him props for wanting to create a legit world. not just one family but he wanted generations of characters to be known in this world lol. he wanted elaborate characters and wars for his fantasy world. i dont blame him for wanting perfection for his fantasy world.
Yup, its gonna take a lot of work with all the characters, plots and stuff. And not sure he has the commitment. These is for what he will be remembered, so he doesnt wanna rush it like in the show plus the last 2 books werent as good as the first, so maybe he is being too perfectionist now.

He NEVER should have started another project before finishing the original one. I don't care about what else he is working on. He is a massive disappointment to all of his original fans. For him to have the audacity to criticize Rowling and Lucas is beyond out of line considering they both had the discipline to finish their original projects before selling out to new ones.
i just looked up the Rowling thing, because she won the Hugo, ages ago and he was bitter. maybe he might win a Hugo, if he ever finished his book! i think George is a world builder. he creates these fantastic worlds, but doesn't really know what to do with the world he created
@@CrypticCharm It feels like he focuses on the wrong characters. Not all of them are bad, but it does feel like a lot of the main characters we follow should be secondary characters while the secondary characters feel like they should be the primary characters.

I’m hoping that’s kind of what’s been happening with his writing. Like, as he’s writing drafts, he’s realising that it would fit better in Dreams, and so he moves it there and changes the context a little. It could mean that once Winds is out, a good chunk of Dreams has already been drafted at least.
I think grrm will be the first human to have his consciousness transferred to a computer. When that happens we will instantaneously get a dream of spring and infinite spin off novels.
Yeah at the very least I’ll bet that in the near future there‘ll actually be many Winds of Winter books and versions all written by many different chatGPT-like AI programs. So in reality we might end up with lots of Winds of Winter books and maybe they’ll be written by the transhuman super robot George or different AI’s. Won’t be the same as original GRRM but it’ll be something at least
Not finishing the Song of Ice and Fire is not a tragedy in itself. It all depends how the released story ends. Right now there are way too many open questions and plotlines we don't know how they are meant to play out (Euron's ritual, Lady Stoneheart's meeting with Jamie and Brienne, all the battles in preparation, Aria still in Bravos, Bran still with the children, etc.). In the last decade so many theories emerged already that it's insane and shows how rich this world is. But imagine that Winds of Winter is fully written, all these character storylines start coming together (most importantly Daenerys finally arrives in Westeros) and the book ends with the Other's bringing down the wall. At this point there wouldn't be too many possible outcomes, depending on how many characters survive up until that point and where those storylines are heading. So what I'm trying to say, even if GRRM dies before Dream of Spring, if Winds of Winter is written properly, everybody can choose their own ending from the possible A,B,C options, how they think the story would end. This way there wouldn't be a disappointing ending. But again, we need Winds of Winter for this, as there are too many open questions.
Exactly!!! I love this!!! Id be like ending the show on season 6, it's enough to feel like one big story. Reminds me of old 80s song that would fade out, makes the song feel endless and rich
I like to think that while he's writing Winds of Winter that he's thinking about he wants to wrap up each storyline in A Dream of Spring so that when he finishes Winds of Winter he already has the ideas for what he wants to do in the next book and hit the ground running when Winds of Winter finally releases
He's a human being, if he passes away, the last thing we should be ashamed of is the production he didn't deliver. I want to see the ending of the books, I don't want my favorite book series to be unfinished or finished by someone else, but I won't speak about the author like that, as though he was some kind of old cattle or machine. If I could choose between he reaching 100 years old but never finishing any other book, or he finishing ASOIAF and passing away before, I would want him to live more. We're not here just to produce and die! Life is not a support system for art. It's the other way around. I know talking like this is not fashionable nowadays, but this is what I want to say regarding this topic, thanks
well, if he was upfront about it and said something like this, I would respect the decision. the problem is that he continually strings fans along with "breadcrumbs" and "teasers" and then fails to deliver on any of them
The problem isn't that he's working himself to death, the problem is that his writing method is utter garbage. No plans, just winging it and "going with the flow." This method does NOT work for long-term storytelling. This is not a race against time. He has already failed. The end.
I am optimistic about A Dream of Spring and I think it will take much shorter time to finish it than TWOW. In the first five books ASOIAF world was expanding, and the number of plot lines increased massively. One of the difficulty of TWOW is that it is a critical point where things are supposed to converge. By the end of TWOW the storylines will be converged enough compared to the beginning of TWOW, and that will make ADOS relatively easier to write as there will be fewer plot lines and pov characters.
I’m on both sides but I have a little more faith that he can finish A Dream of Spring because all he has to do is get the problems out of the way with Winds of Winter and then a resolution with A Dream of Spring
For this to happen it would take an extreme shift in the pacing of the story, meaning there would have to be so much more action then what the series is used to, that the atmosphere itself would be dancing on the borders of a YA parody. I simply do not see this happening.

Knew this for years. He was insulted when fans told him to quit playing around and get to work. This is his way of saying "Fans don't tell me what to do". Someone will pick it up after he's dead and complete all of the books
Since there isn't a true deadline for them, he needs to just go on a scouting mission, find a talented young writer willing to do the "pen to paper" part based off George's notes and ideas. George can be the editor to change what he doesn't like... but otherwise I don't think either of the stories are ever going to finish...
He’s making it harder than it has to be ; once one show air , complete the writing of the other and when that show gets aired work on the other shows.. just take turns like the power series did.

i have high hopes that winds of winder is the largest and hardest book to write becouse it is book where all the characters around the world come together and i have hopes once that is done, writting the ending would be easier for him. He already knows how to end the story. so fingers crossed, he might be able to finish dream of spring in 2-3 years. FINGERS CROSSED
I agree that winds is probably the longest and most difficult to write but even IF the last book takes less time to write it's unlikely we'll see if within 2-3 years of winds simply because this man has no real self control and has so many other things pulling at this attention. By then multiple more shows will be airing and I can see him wanting to take a serious break of at least 1 maybe even 2 years before he even attempts writing a dream of spring.
I would say that winds probably is the hardest of all of them to write, and he's almost justified with the length of time it's taking. But Dream of Spring will probably be the next hardest, and with the other distractions and the fact that he'll most likely decide to split it into another book, I think it'll take at least 8 years.
@@Gadouts I don't think we'll ever see dream of spring for obvious reasons, that was just an estimate on how long I think it would take for him to write it at the rate he's going. I am confident we'll see winds in 3-4 years though, if he's still alive and writing by then
I believe the very earliest we will get The Winds of Winter is 2030. We will never ever get to read A Dream of Spring. Maybe an outline with a different author? I believe that is the absolute best case scenario we can realistically hope for.
its amazing to think that a story that has now turned into several wildly successful adaptations and prequels/sequels will never actually get an ending. I've still yet to watch HOTD, and I probably won't watch/read any GOT or ASOIF content unless the main story is concluded. Just can't get myself invested in it unless the main story that drew me into this universe is concluded. Without that, its like finding out the house you bought will never be fully built, but they are adding a nice new deck and a pool.
I feel the same. Between the situation with the books and the hot mess of GOT's final season, I can no longer find enthusiasm for any of the side projects. If you had told me five years ago that there would be a Targ TV show or a Dunk and Egg adaptation, I would have been thrilled. But now? Eh. These other things are appetizers and desserts, not the main course we're hungry for.
I think he knows what the ending but how to get there is the hard part. He pretty much needs to conclude the last surviving character's fate and someone else can even write that for him. We need him to push through the winds of winter first as I'm sure if he does he will tell someone in detail how he wants this to end. He's pinpointed back then that the ending of GoT tv show wouldn't be so much different than the book ending so he does have a clear idea
I've been saying for years that he'll never finish ASoIaF. The truth is that S7/8 of GoT show was a lot closer to his vision than anyone, especially GRRM, wants to admit. When he saw the backlash he crapped himself and has been frantically trying to salvage ASoIaF ever since, except he can't because most of the story is written and the ending, including several key details, are heavily foreshadowed and/or alluded to.
While some of the plot twists were spoiled, (all the Jon stuff mostly), I don't think the show could be accurate to the book plot. The show devolved into pandering and spectacle, with only the most popular characters being given all the screen time and the budget being spent on their inflated wages and flashy battle scenes. Regardless, how could the show accurately depict the book events? A few plot elements really stand out as being major differences. Aegon's invasion of Westeros. Whatever Euron is up to. The "Northern Conspiracy" in Winterfell. Stannis and Mance who were both killed off in the show, but not in the book. The Dornish scheming. Unless George wrote all those plot elements only for them to go nowhere, it's impossible that the books could tread the same ground as the show.
Authors sometimes don’t finish books but when it is your MAIN series you are known for, it’s not the same as other authors he is comparing himself to who didn’t finish lesser-known novels. That is not a fair comparison, George. A fairer comparison would be like if JK didn’t finish the last Harry Potter book or like if Tolkien never finishing LOTR. That’s what it’s equivalent to. What scares me is that your brain and memory changes significantly each year after age 65. So by the time he finally decides to sit down and finish, he might not even remember his own story! What I’m hoping is that his input in these shows inspires him to write this year and inspires ideas…and gets him excited about writing again.
Robert Jordan unfortunately never finished AWoT, may he rest in peace. I'd rather he pursue things that excite and motivate him and otherwise enjoy his life than try to force himself to mechanically produce something that's currently joyless for him. That's just never been how he writes, and it would be evident in every page imo
GRRM could just outline all the future key events in ASOIAF. This way he could have an apprentice or co-writer who could take over just in case he runs out of time. Storytelling is an arts and it takes time to perfect it depending on the artist.
From what I've heard from others, I think there are several factors contributing to him never finishing the books. - He's old - He lost his assistant writers (who left to write The Expanse). They may have carried the later books and helped him stay on track - He's lost interest in the story - He's so wealthy that there's no motivation to do it and without discipline from a deadline or financial strain, he can't do it - He may be lazy. He's an older man and already has success. Why bother finishing it when he's already achieved success? - The books seem too intimidating because they're so complicated I think what he needs to do is hire more assistant writers and lore masters, then work on the final outlines for a while to get everything in order and ensure he doesn't miss anything. Mull over it for a while. Then just hunker down and write the books with everyone else's help. If there are too many threads, wrap some up quickly. At this point, the fans won't mind if he narrows things down a little. This way, even if he dies or gets sick, he'll have a trusted team to carry the outline forward without worries about things getting out of hand like in the show.
the math hasn't been mathing on the dream of spring release for a long time lol. That said, I'll be devastated when Martin checks out, regardless of what has or hasn't been released, and I'll cherish everything he has actually written.
I agree, we have seen the last book from A Song of Ice and Fire, but not for any of the reasons you stated. Based on several interviews I have heard GRRM give, I believe the main reason he has never finished Winds if Winter is because he keeps running into continuity errors, that's that will he is just not being able to correct or at least be able to correct in a way that has fans will accept. That combined with the way the show ruined the ending is what he has lost his passion for Winds of Winter. At this point I would rather see hm write more Dunk and Egg stories now anyway.
I really sympathize with GRRM. Some people just really struggle to stay on path when things get a life of their own. Even without the pressure of the success (and later subsequent disappointment) of the show, the expansive world he has created really does have a life and success of its own. Also, this may be me projecting, but as someone with ADHD and ASD, the way GRRM goes about his creative process and the external pressures from HBO is giving me the notion he may be neurodivergent, which isnt entirely important, but to me gives me an even deeper understanding of why he struggles to finish the ASOIAF series and i am extremely sympathetic to it. I've struggled similarly on a much smaller scale, and as soon as there is pressure to create something vs just following a task, i find it extremely difficult to follow through with creating. I hope he has something lined up in the long run for the series to be finished in his vision with or without him for all the fans disappointed in this possibility
Thank you for pointing that put! When Martin is talking about his writing process and that he gets bored easily when he plans to many details of the narration in advance, it also reminded me of (my own) ADHD traits. Might be projection, too, but we all only can speculate.
Call me crazy...but what about this idea...STOP MAKING SHOWS ABOUT STORIES THAT ARE NOT DONE!!!! There are tons of stories that are ready to go!! Use those first.
Keep in mind, a Dunk & Egg series won't nearly be as time consuming to make. It's a smaller, more personal story, at least in the first three books. They don't need CGI dragons and huge armies. It's mostly just people in costumes, fighting in much smaller groups. There won't be as many decisions of what to cut or include as with GoT and not as much to create whole hog as with HotD. HBO will want to space out the release between seasons, but there won't need to be year or more breaks. That means Martin will probably have to write those stories faster.
The North Remembers is an excellent fanfic that provides a pretty satisfying end to the story, and I recommend it to anyone who can’t fathom the story incomplete
And let’s not forget… the man is 74 years old, and if we are totally honest with each other, doesn’t look to be in tip top health. Once I started hearing about all of this stuff that is supposedly on the docket, I gave up any hope of seeing A Dream Of Spring. And… knowing that we won’t get that… I’m not as excited about WoW. It’ll just be an unfinished story… leaving us all hanging… just like what happened with GOT. As a book dragon who has read this series several times to the point that it is… well….It saddens me greatly.
Since it’s based on the War of the Roses could the story’s end be exactly how that war ended? That would be my guess, along with probably a small tweaking of events. I would also guess perfectionism could be playing an obstacle in this since I can relate to the desire of making a massive story perfect. That would in turn cause side effects like procrastination, also the sprouting of random stories can be common in an author as we can see in the diverse works.
First the show let me down, then the books will be incomplete. It hurts to say but fans and his legacy could turn gainst him. Above all I wish this guy good health and i thank him for his works, honestly its been amazing. Im about to finish book 1. Idgaf what happens, it is what it is.
Finishing a project is not as fun as starting it. The lore and the characters are written, and each thing he writes must be consistent with what he already wrote. I guess that's why each book takes longer than the previous one and why he prefers to work on new spin-offs.
To m, he's a legend of procrastination and dissapointment. Once he was ompared to Tolkien but Tolkien finished his books with an awesome endings to match the beginning and middle sections. And he even created another language to go with his universe. He kept humble and focued and gifted us all and future generations with more than a story.
The novels are paramount to the saga. Books are what make Legends, not video. Without finishing the saga, the legacy of the SoIaF vanishes from being. Please do not forsake the legend, with it's detail and insight for the flash of on screen shallowness.
I have always loved epic fantasy, but it's getting to the point where I don't want to start a series that hasn't been completed already - I've been burnt one too many times ... George RR Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, Melissa McPhail (but she had a good reason, at least), and possibly even Brandon Sanderson (he MIGHT complete the Stormlight series, but he's certainly putting a lot of time into other projects while we wait)
I love how he loves to critique tolkien's books and writing style. Say what you want of Tolkien george, at least he finished the main books in his tale.
Unfortunately, I don't think he'll finish anything he has started, mainly due to his age and the fact that he's chasing so many things. I feel sorry for the people that desperately want to read the last two books in the Song of Ice and Fire series.

At this point, the Preston Jacobs collab fanfic will become the real ending in many fans’ eyes. Whatever GRRM musters up will be too little too late. And he’ll deserve it.
I feel like the only way he would finish a dream of spring is if he’s already started writing it side by side with Winds but I highly doubt that’s the case. Either way I’m excited for any and ALL ASOIAF work 😊
The man is unique but he has also some sort of diagnose. He hasn’t been able to finish even one story and now they are green lighting him tons of more works in 3 different book series and non is finalized and most likely never will be. Just come out and say you’ve stopped writing and will never finish en. George will be remembered as “The knight who never finished” :/
I’d like to hope we get the true ending to all these but I feel like we’ll have to Sacrifice one for the other. And the one we don’t necessarily want is the fact he’ll most likely finish the novellas before ASOIAF

Jean M. Auel who wrote the 'Earth's Children' series mostly known as Clan of the Cavebear books had over a decade between her last books. She wrote the first 4 books between *1980-1989*, then came her 5th book in *2002* and her *last book came in 2011* . Sometimes great books take a great amount of time. Now I don't know if there was any particular special reason why her last two books took so long compared to her previous publishing schedule, but it's one of the best books ever written in my opinion and well worth the wait, even if the science is a bit dated now, it was considered very very good in it's time. 1 The Clan of the Cave Bear Jun-1980 2 The Valley of Horses Apr-1982 3 The Mammoth Hunters Jan-1986 4 The Plains of Passage Dec-1989 5 The Shelters of Stone May-2002 6 The Land of Painted Caves Apr-2011
He's already rich. No idea why he is focusing on televisions at his age now. He will be known for his main series, not for the side stories he is writing now. If he is struggling to finish, he should just come out and say it.
To be honest, I’m all but completely over ASOIAF and I’ve pretty much lost interest in Winds of Winter. I would honestly rather see a Dunk and Egg show and ever more than that, I’d love to read more Dunk and Egg stories. I think that the last few seasons of Game of Thrones weren’t far off from the ending that George had in mind, and all the horrible criticism from the shows/ending has discouraged him from finishing the series. He’s literally in the process of rewriting everything he had planned because of the shows failure.
I think some of the major events will be the same, in particular the shakespearean tragedy ending of Jon killing Daenerys but the satisfying way that the characters get to their endpoints will be better told and accepted much more
Pft, even IF the next books came out tomorrow, it's been so long I'd have to re-read the first 5 books and I'm not doing that. The last series I finished was The Expanse (which was amazing) and I'm just now reading the original LotR trilogy (great thus far... a lot of singing though). I stopped giving a damn about GRRM a long time ago. I've moved on.
Read Malazan Book of the Fallen after you finish LOTR! I love it and as a massive Tolkien nerd, I'm thrilled with Malazan. The author's name is Steven Erickson.
I used to defend this guy it's his masterpiece. Let him work at his own pace, I said. Especially when the screen writers for the condensed a lot of material and threw out whole arcs and stories. But I'm done defending him he can't even finish his final book, which is the most important part. He's pissing away a lot of fan support by not finishing that book.
I think there should be more hope for dream of spring. Half the reason winds of winter is taking so long is their story lines and he will likely be thinking about their endings for the next book in this one and getting plot points slowly set up
I am so excited to see the how The Song of Ice and Fire goes! During the void of shows, I’m reading. I love the variation of the books, from the show. I gives me so much hope. I love George’s original vision, and I cheated during the run time of the show, to hear how plots were supposed to play out. I will be heart broken if George’s ideas don’t come to fruition. I have come to the compromise(in my mind), that if one of HIS collaborators were to fill in his blanks, I would be appeased. I selfishly wish George a long life. If it isn’t meant to be, I think that he has a lot of collaborators and assistants, who could perpetuate his ideas toward a coherent ending.
I wish he had the work ethic of Brandon Sanderson. The book would have been finished within one year, maybe two books. lol! Despite this, I can't help but be amazed with all the creative stories G R.R. Martin has in his head that show executives and viewers are clamoring for more of them. Such talent!
I heard a theory that I agree with about the Dunk&Egg novels. That George will write and finish off this story on the big screen or the TV show instead of taking years to write the novels. It just makes more sense with the overbearing work load that he's gotten himself into
Well it’s rumored that he has 500 pages of manuscript left. On average his books have had 1500 manuscript pages, so it took him 12 years to get 2/3 of the way. It’ll likely take him 6 more years to finish winds of winter. That would mean that he’ll be 80 years old when he finishes. He’s not exactly the healthiest looking person so logically he won’t finish this. Likely because he wrote himself into a corner he cannot get out of.
I remember being bored AF during the Blizzard of 2014 doing the same thing as now wishing the book was out, & listening to a youtube video about W.O.W being so late , but it looked optimistic... 😂😂😂 Yeah Right...
