Highlights for me, Chris Boardman, Sally Gunnell, Linford Christie and Steve Redgrave won his third consecutive gold in rowing following 1984 and 1988. My earliest memory of the Olympics was Seoul 1988. As usual, BBC broadcasted the coverage and surprisingly ITV. Oh and a Greek athlete won the 100m hurdles in Barcelona '92. One of the surprise moments of the games. Barcelona is such a big city in Spain probably due to its famous football club so it has a bit of sporting heritage. Note that the Unified Team who were in a transitional period at the time are now Russia (formerly Soviet Union). Fermin Cacho's win in the Men's 1500m is another highlight and got the Spanish crowd going. Mentioning Chris Boardman winning gold in cycling at the Velodrome, it is somewhat forgotten now compared to say Chris Hoy in the last two to three Olympic Games including London 2012.

Barcelona 1992 was very important because Estonia came there as independent state. Latvia and Lithuania did the same. Our country won two medals- gold of cycling and bronze of sailing.

I was wondering the same thing. Can't find Seoul Olympics either. I was trying to find the 1972 Munich games as well, but no go.

1984 LA, 1988 Seoul, 1992 Albertville, 1998 Nagano, 2008 Beijing are missing. And technically, this video is not the actual Bud Greenspan film for the 1992 Barcelona games.

Probably because the old videos were in even worse condition & hence had to be restored, while the new ones hasn't deteriorated much?

The older all Olympic films were shot on film and from 92 on they were shot on video. With film if you scan the original final film then you will get very good resolution. It is said that 16mm film can resolve resolution up to 4k. In the video, we are just now getting to the point of shooting at 4k resolution. Unfortunately, since they shot the entire Olympics in Video, you will only ever get the max of that format, so in the case of Barcelona 92- Athens 04 were all shot in SD So a Max of 480 lines of resolution. To add insult to injury, it was all shot interlaced too, so that is why you get those jaggies throughout the video.

Many of the official films of the Olympic Games are being restored in a long project. Unfortunately we haven't been able to put up all of them as restored as they were not ready, but some of the ones you mentioned have been fully restored and that's why they have incredible quality.

I doubt it, I suspect it was 480i which was as good as it got in 92.

Barcelona Olympics in 1992 was shot in HD at 1250/50. 480i is not even a European standard - past or present.

Thanks for that. Coming up in the U.S. System you rarely study anything European broadcast related. looks like it was also called HD-MAC. I'll read up on it HD in the 80, 90's is right up my level of fascination.

It did not go anywhere. In 1991 in the U.S. General Instrument entered the first digital HTDV system in the running, in 1994 test runs of the Grand Alliance system commenced. Same year NHK cancelled its MUSE system. Digital HDTV won. But HD-MAC had its shining moment in Albertville and Barselona in 1992, this is what I expected to see on the official Olympics channel. This video, despite offering 1080p setting, seems to be deinterlaced and upscaled from standard def footage. Such is fate of the European HD initiative: the documents, equipment and footage has not been well preserved.

Understood thanks for the history! I have a feeling that if they ever wanted to do an HD version, it would take a considerable effort because i suspect they converted them to some SD format to ease of use.

actually if you read the screen on the stadium there it says at 7:15 "el mediterraneo, mar olimpico"... the mediterrean, olympic sea... I think it's a representation of the ancient warriors arriving to Greece, to play the games...
