Closest thing to that sword would be the Italian spadone or the German zweihander, large 6-7 ft long swords that are about 6lbs. They way they are used is as crowd control where the swordsman swings the sword around them in large circular motions. A lot of idiots think “I’ll just keep my distance until the swordsman gets tired of swinging his sword around”. Well if you keep your distance the swordsman with the zweihander isn’t going to waste his energy swinging his sword around.

It works with Guts because he has been swinging oversized swords since he was a kid and he is freakishly strong. It is also important to note that, especially when it comes to the dragonslayer, he actually tries to end the fights in as few swings as possible, because the sword is still very heavy and awkward, and he does lose the ability to wield it properly if he takes too much damage. He is much more nimble with the stuff he uses until he becomes the black swordsman, and only can use the dragonslayer similarly after donning the Berserker armor.

The reason giant sworbs are impractical is not because of their combat capabilitys, its because carrying a huge chunk of metal is very hard.

Historically speaking, large swords were intended to be used on the battlefield in a similar niche to spears. They were also useful for dismounting horse-riding opponents or killing horses.

It's worth bearing in mind: in fantasy settings, weapons like this are typically used by superhumans to fight what are essentially magical megafauna. The needs of a typical human doing battle with a typical human present a very different dynamic.

The problem with giant swords is the fact that it can be made significantly less giant and cumbersome without losing any killing potential.

Those swords are impractical and ineffective in a medieval combat scenario. Swords were light so they could be swung *throughout a battle,* and possibly even more importantly, carried on your person off the battlefield for extended periods of time. No medieval hand held weapon, maybe besides a pike, was ever that heavy. Even weapons that we view as “heavy,” such as maces and war hammers, were in reality quite light, usually under 5 pounds for single handed variants. This was not only because heavy weapons are incredibly hard to wield for that long, but also because the recovery time of getting the weapon back up after you swing it is really long, and leaves you open to attack, which is exactly what the sword this guy made would do. It would be slow to recover (as you see in the video), and he would tire out quickly. I don’t care how much he benches or curls. Furthermore, the thickness of the blade means there’s very little actual cutting capacity compared to other swords. It would likely struggle against gambesons, and wouldn’t do much of anything beyond blunt force damage to plate armor. Feel free to test it tho, might be a fun video! There WERE swords that were taller than this one in real life! European greatswords and Japanese Odachi were often more than 6 feet long, and could get over 7! The difference is those swords were deceptively light, and their techniques in surviving manuscripts show a lot of conservation of energy, ie the wielder always keeping the blade in motion so they don’t have to bring the blade up slowly before swinging it when it’s time to attack. Now does this mean that sword isn’t cool? Hell no! My D&D character would happily use that! But is it effective in real life? No.

I love berserk. I love the dragonslayer. As a fencer, if a normal person tried to use something that is at minimum 40 lbs(closer to 300-400lbs, but 40 works fine for this illustration.), you just need to bait an attack and attack before they are able to gain control of their weapon again.

I love that even though we live in a world where we've had handheld one-shot kill weapons around for some time now, we still can't get enough of swords. Largely impractical in this day and age they may be, but a forgotten relic of a time long past they are not.

But the thing is that you don't need to split a skull in two to kill them. A quick stab almost anywhere is enough to make the opponent unable to fight effectively. And if they for some reason still try they'll die of blood loss.

Real life zweihanders were enormous. They weren’t thick like fantasy swords, but if you move efficiently with them, you could wreck someone. From a logistics standpoint for a hypothetical army, they’d be a nightmare and require too much training, most times.

Dear lord, it even makes the iconic "clang" sound effect that we heard a lot of in the 2016 berserk adaptation. Say what you want about it, but the voice acting, sound effects, and music were top tier. Mind you, nothing beats the classic behelit theme and absolutely nothing beats the guts theme

This weapon is to heavy to be practical. I'm not saying that it cant be used but one of the points of a weapon is ease of extended use. A weapon like this has no place on a battlefield but for a single dual absolute monster of a piece and the blacksmith who made it, absolute legend. Moving that much metal is a monster of a task.

I mean, you hit a plastic bucket. Now hit a man wielding a spear. You can't because you can't reach him and the second guy with a spear stabbed you in the ribs while you tried to, piercing your colon, and putting your dumbass into septic shock. Really cool, still wildly impractical.

The dragonslayer blade is impossible to wield though, that’s kind of the whole point. Throughout the manga it’s mentioned how people can’t believe guts can even lift that blade, let alone use it. Guts uses it in impossible ways

I don’t know if he did it on purpose or if it’s legitimately just the natural or most effective pose to hit when doing that slash downward. But bro just did the pose from the first dragon slayer kill in the first chapter of berserk against that bucket. That’s pretty awesome.

The problem with big heavy weapons is that every move you make is choreographed. I can see how you're going to swing, if you can, and make moves to get around it. It can be intimidating but even someone who can swing it well will still have to wind up for most things.

somebody could just do a faint and yould be stuck mid swing and they just stab you mid recovery and that thing will drain your stamina real quick eventually youll be too tired to swing back unless youve got guts levels of stamina but it really is very intimidating still

Ok, but here's the issue: you get one commited attack. Yeah, it's very difficult for them to block, but the massive end lag is gonna be a serious problem. You might be able to deter them entering your striking range but if you swing and miss, it's gonna be really tricky to stop them coming at you and hacking you to pieces, or just grabbing your giant sword seeing as it's now 40 lbs of steel buried in the ground with a really bad leverarm.
