It's a pity Holden didn't source a GM 4-speed automatic for the VK. That, with the EFI six, would have been a knockout combination.

Same here the 6, but i remember out in coburg the car yards had so many brocks and V8 versions of the cars it was not funny, to think now that if you had the CASH you kept them you would be rich as. :)

The VK commodore when it changed to Bosch fuel injection had issues with super petrol clogging the injectors.

Because I had an injury mine did over 300000km, before the engine showed no sign of giving up.Quality was similar to any car at the time, people just loved talking down local products. Mine was a 5 speed Berlin’sa, a ripper of a car at the time . It accelerated well responsive had good brakes and handled well.Toyota evidently had better quality. I never saw it. Just a great car for the type of driving I did.

Wow. 7l/100. Its was a robust little engine but the ancient 202 DRANK fuel like there was no tomorrow. And gutless to boot. It wouldn't get that figure going down hill with a tailwind. This is the most flagrantly stretched car advertising I've ever seen. While the "acclaimed" trimatic was tired and old and nothing to get excited about. The new AM/FM radio was crap and couldn't pick up a thing in country areas. But hey at least it finally had FM. The headlights were useless after dark. They look tired and plain and ugly now but at the time we all thought these looked amazing. And they did ride quite well although the 14" wheels and skinny tires slid out easily when pushed. Ah nostalgia. Its all gone now.

Yeah compare with the Japanese cars everyone hung shit on - the Jap cars ran rings on the falcon and commodore. Jeez falcon couldn’t even get a 4 speed auto until the second versions of the EA shitbox

My dad’s commodore had the 3 speed problematic transmission. It was in fact, that transmission that led me buy a manual as my first car (a 1978 TD Gemini Wagon in Atlantis Blue), even though I took my lessons and test in an automatic. However, I’ve never looked back. I’ve never owned an automatic car, I hope I never do.

Lol, reserve that until you've seen one of these in real life. You can walk between the panel gaps, the interior fell apart as they built them and the headlight had the power of an unlit candle. These are just embarrassing. Hence they had to get Nissan to help them actually get these slugs up the road, ended up with an excellent drivetrain and the car fell apart around it. We used to paddock bash these, they couldn't even cope with that.

@@garethcurtis7545 they actually had to turn to Nissan, as GMH couldn’t afford to design an engine that met EmIssions standards fo the next ( VL) generation, since Detroit bailed out Holden only a a couple of years earlier.
@jonathonvial9726

I had an injected vk, it was very ordinary. Crap fuel economy, crap performance. 7.3 l/p100km, well nearly double that and thats taking it easy. I traded up to a VL v8 which got better economy and by the time l tweaked it a bit and converted it to a 5 speed manual, easily got under 10 l/p 100 km. Sorry GMH the 202 was clearly disposed of for a very good reason, it never received the capital investment required to cut it with the competition and to a lesser degree l think you could apply that train of thought to the v8. Putting the RB30 in the vl was a bit better and those turbos could be rockets with a bit of a fiddle. The vn may not have been anything special but it was a vast improvement.

I heartily agree...the aged red/blue/black engine was already pensionable with HQ - nearly zero development had been done on it, wasn't even a crossflow.

Unfortunately the VK Commodore had the worst build quality. Just look at the headlight surround in the video and you will notice the front left guard panel does not line up with the headlight. And thats for starters. I bought a new one (VK Calais in 84) and there were so many issues including mechanical. It was worst than buying a secondhand one :(
@Deso958
@Deso958 6 лет назад
Dont get me wrong they were a lovely car to drive and mine was reliable, Just their build quality was bad compared to the VB SLE I had prior. Had the Calais for 24 years on the same engine (5 litre - 384,000 kms) until it was stolen. I currently have VF Calais. So I have always loved these cars :)

des o. I own a vk 308 calais and EVERYTHING still works including the ac and cruise. They were as good as anything available at the time reliable good handling and way better than the ford xd xe which were an outdated shitbox with dinosaur leaf spring rear end and door handles that snapped of every five minutes.

That engine had no business being in an executive class car in 1984 - it was underdeveloped even for 1971...so much penny pinching.

I think 12.3 litres/100 kilometres for city driving & 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres is a load of rubbish if anyone is speaking about the old 202 cubic inch Holden six, that's coming from a Holden such as myself - 202 = fuel guzzler. They got 20 kilowatts more power (86 kilowatts) out of the black 202 cubic inch Holden six over the red 202 engine (66 kilowatts) but the fuel consumption was pretty much still the same. The EFI engine had a whopping 40 kilowatt power increase (106 kilowatts) over red carby 202 engine but the fuel consumption was basically the same as in the HQ Kingswood which was fitted with the red 202 cubic inch Holden six but the power increase was a massive achievement back in 1984. They dropped both the 173 cubic inch Holden six from the lineup which was an economical engine which my dad used to get 28 miles per U.K. gallon out of when he bolted one into his old HQ Kingswood wagon. People have claimed to get 11.5 litres per 100 kilometres (about 25 miles per U.K. gallon) out of the black Carby 202 engine in the VK Commodore which must've been Holdens reasoning for dropping the 173 cubic inch engine, the power output out of the black Carby motor was about the same as the single exhaust 253 cubic inch Holden V8 engine in the Previous model VH Commodore. The black EFI Holden six put out more power than the 100 kilowatt twin (French) exhaust 253 cubic inch V8 engine did in the VH Commodore SL/E & SL/X models. From what I gather,the 202 cubic inch Holden six in any form is a fuel guzzler,try about an average of 18 miles per U.K. gallon or on a good day 20 miles per U.K. gallon,the very best my father got was 21 Miles per U.K. gallon when driving on the highway for 600 kilometres. I knew someone who used to thrash his red 202 cubic inch Holden six powered HZ Holden Kingswood (1978-1979 model) sedan which was out of tune & it had exhaust leaks,he got down to 12 miles per U.K. gallon out of the 66 kilowatt engine - that's terrible. You may as well have bought the 308/304 cubic inch Holden V8 back then if you had the money as their fuel economy was about the same as what the 202 cubic inch Holden sixes was !

A pity there was no turbo injected model, I did one years ago as a custom deal and it spanked a 5.0L, trimatic upgraded to V8 internals and shift kitted with an early Wolf computer it got 30+ mpg drove unbelievably well, was a Berlina would not have taken Holden much of production change but I guess someone thought a Nissan motor was the way to go,and held out until VL model face lift, i think a 2850 turbo (173) model would have been the go next to 2850 na model and let the 3.3 fade away

The start of Holden's down fall...while other Manufacturers were going Twin Cam, Fuel injection and Turbo charging...Holdens best effort was a dirty old "Black Motor" Holden thought people would just keep buying their ONE model car...they couldn't have got it any more wrong...Holdens biggest market ended up being Westie Bogans buying years old "Second Hand" Commodores....Not good when your business is selling NEW CARS
