Official Live Performance Little John - Junior Cat - Josey Wales Live & Direct at Brixton
Junior Cat
Born Ricardo Maragh in Kingston, Jamaica, JUNIOR CAT started making his way through the rugged ranks of dancehall leagues in his early teens while hanging out in the local clubs, shops and street corners of the Cockburn Pen community. "The Pen," at the time, was the hub for the reggae industry's finest architects. Junior Cat's popularity grew when he entertained the masses with his quick witted freestyling while effortlessly "riding a riddim," without so much as skipping a beat. His climb to fame was, however, more painstaking as he was often compared to his older brother, Super Cat who was already making his way to mainstream fame. That, however, did not impede JUNIOR CAT's ambition.
After winning a local talent contest, Junior Cat extended his prowess to Sound Systems -where greats like Early B; Puddy Roots; Little Twitch and Ninja Man gathered at dances to compete with one another in support of their "Sound." Sound clash competitions began to spread throughout the island taking the artists to higher levels of fame around the world. Fans then and now pay big money to be in the presence of a Sound Clash especially when there is an artist performing live alongside the selectors. The bigger the Sound, the more exhilarating the experience. Junior Cat, a bad boy per se, quickly built a reputation for holding no prisoners on the mic with the toughest lines that made grown men run in shame and was a regular feature on what would later become the World Famous Killamanjaro Sound.
Little John
John McMorris first recorded with Captain Sinbad for the Youth In Progress label at the tender age of nine, where his piping interjections contrasted neatly with Sinbad’s gruff style, and throughout the 80s he was seldom out of the reggae charts. Claimed by many to be the first dancehall singer, his ability to fit lyrics over any rhythm or backing track became something of a legend in a business that has scant regard for second takes and ‘dropping in’. Little John did it every time - and he rode on the crest of the 80s’ dancehall music explosion, becoming a superstar by the age of 17. He began his career on Romantic Hi Fi, moving up through Killimanjaro, Gemini and Volcano Hi Power, where he honed and perfected his craft with a lengthy string of live appearances. Simultaneously, he was recording for virtually every producer in Jamaica, notably Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes, Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim, George Phang, Jah Thomas and Jammys, and he has released countless records on a bewildering string of labels. He no longer records as extensively as he once did, and limits his live appearances to a minimum. Hits for Exterminator proved that he was not relying on his past glories, and his talent, warm personality and skill as a raconteur remained.
Josey Wales was one of dancehall's founding fathers, building on the innovative DJ chatting of his mentor U-Roy and creating a highly influential style of his own. Along with Brigadier Jerry and his sound-system partner Charlie Chaplin, Wales was widely regarded as one of the best DJs in Jamaica when dancehall took over the reggae scene in the early '80s. His gruff, gravelly voice and half-spoken, half-sung delivery were instantly recognizable, and were copied by many an up-and-coming DJ. Unlike his contemporary Yellowman -- perhaps the only DJ of the era who was more popular -- Wales pointedly refused to resort to slackness, keeping his lyrics purely conscious and Rastafarian. That meant he grew increasingly unfashionable over the course of the '80s, but he nonetheless continued to perform regularly, and remained a highly respected pioneer.
Josey Wales was born Joseph Winston Sterling in West Kingston, Jamaica, and took his stage name from the Clint Eastwood Western The Outlaw Josey Wales; naturally, "The Outlaw" became a standard nickname for him, along with "The Colonel." Wales first performed professionally as a DJ with the Roots Unlimited Sound System in 1977, and made his name as part of U-Roy's King SturGav Hi-Fi Sound System, where he spent three and a half years in the early '80s. There he teamed with DJ sparring partner Charlie Chaplin in one of the most potent one-two punches of the era, which in turn made King SturGav arguably the biggest sound system around. Wales' first recordings were live performances issued on producer Bunny Roots' label, but he didn't enter the studio until he hooked up with the foremost producer in early dancehall, Henry "Junjo" Lawes. Wales began moonlighting for Lawes' Volcano sound system, and in 1983, he issued his first-ever single on the Volcano label, "Baby Come Home.
