The official unveiling of
the internationally recognized heritage symbol, the Blue Heritage Plaque, by the City of
Johannesburg in partnership with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, in recognition of the
historical significance of the late Reverend Frederick Samuel Modise’s house at No.1 Reverend
Frederick Samuel Modise Road, Meadowlands, Soweto, as a heritage site.
The occasion also culminated with the launch of the T.S. Modise Foundation. The
foundation is part of the overall objectives of His Grace, Ntate T.S. Modise, to work in
partnership with other stakeholders to alleviate poverty and build social cohesion among
communities.
"The house was formerly used by the Native Resettlement Board as an administrative reception office for residents arriving from the Western Areas during the forced Removals that commenced in 1955. Most residents remember this house as the place where on arrival in Meadowlands, they were given a pint of milk and two loaves of bread, before being allocated to their new homes. The house now belongs to the Rev Frederick Modise of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church."
