All of these rich people “Just get a job making $300K a year and then you can get a yacht like mine and afford to live here legally!” Right. Stop trying to regular everything. This is sick. Let them live in their boats, rich creep
This guy states that “the boats aren’t what the bay is for” WTF? I thought the bay was nature that isn’t owned by people. He just doesn’t want the eyesore.
Unsurprisingly a property investor wants to increase their property value. People flipping houses and treating homes like they treat the stock market is sickening to me. I'm strongly against government oversight but this needs to be addressed like a crisis. Sadly most of the people capable of mandating controls are also real estate speculators. I hope there is a severe housing crash and they lose everything so living indoors is less of a rarity.
Who is he to say what the bay is for being that it's a completely arbitrary human conception? Beyond the basic philosophical problems, this is actually a really ugly kind of class warfare. To live on a boat at all one has to be relatively "with it" or you'll drown within a day. These people are the last of a very self reliant and independent culture that has thrived in the bay for over a century. And the rich toffs on the hill want to make them extinct. Not a good look. And to what end ultimately? To be as boring as dishwater and devoid of personality? Great.
They think they will live for ever after they are gone, people will take there place. Some of those boats been there since the 1950s. The San Pablo bay was once had many Chinese dingies fisheries then they got chase out. You see how the media don't want to bring up that part of history. So yeah people have been living on the bay since the 1800s on boats.
It sickens me that some people get a hard on destroying someone's home and putting them in a tents. Its sad the world has come to the point that a small group of people control the lives of others. And destroy them at will with no recourse or remorse.
Living on a boat is a dream for many (even for some of us homeowners), and to call them "homeless" is actually offensive. Maybe their boat is not well maintained or as shiny and big as yours, and for that you like to make them feel like less. Some people who live in cabins prefer that to a big mountain chalet.
Federal laws control tidal waters not cities. People have always lived on the bay in boats. Remember the boat people battles in the early 70s? The waters fall under federal law not city or county.
I love Sausalito. When I was visiting last year it made me so happy to see all those boats especially around sunset. I even thought that there should be more boats. 🙂
You can imagine how many of those boat people will jump at the chance to pay rent to moor their houseboat in an approved slip. In the end you can expect that they will be forced off the Bay.
Probably none of them that’s why they’re there. To put a boat in a marina as a live aboard the boat must be at least 40’ long. Have a nice appearance. Be insured for $300,000-$500,000 and rent is $400 a month. Anchoring doesn’t require any of that
Exactly! And I may be wrong about this, but something makes me think that there are certain legalities that prevent businesses from having floating stores. If not, I know what I'm bout to do. Lol
She said they remove abandoned boats! BS!!! They wait until the people leave their boat to go get supplies on land and then the "harbor master" sneaks and tows their boats to shore and crushes them!!! It's a crime against humanity!!!
God why cant you just leave these people alone .thats all yu got theirs nothing more important ! It seems things really are not that bad if you have to go after this...or is it distraction?
Larry is full of shit. Those boats have a federally protected right to anchor on federal waterways and the federal court ruling allowing homeless to encamp or anchor anywhere when a city does not provide adequate shelter. The Bay Area's prosperity has caused epic homelessness and affordability for basic shelter has not been met and perhaps never will be. The BOATS STAY.
Jeb Bush passed a law in FL protecting anchored boats’ rights. The “Seven Seas” organization compiled of West Marine, TowBoatUS, and many others lobbied for protection of anchoring rights which were being violated by municipalities across Florida. So, research what they did and remember that municipalities can lose.
My husband and I live in New Mexico and we’ve been actively looking to buy a sailboat and moving out to California. Moving to California and living on a boat is a dream of ours...kinda sucks that they’re so stingy..maybe we’ll take our money to Florida instead ☹️
TRY THE GULF COAST! MS AL LOUISIANA, MUCH MORE TOLERABLE TO LOWER INVOME PEOPLE AND HOW THEY NEED TO SURVIVE. GREAT BUNCH OF PEOPLE. CAREING AND NOT SO UP IN YOUR FACE " IM RICHER THAN YOU SO IM IN CHARGE"! FLORIDA ISCWORSE THAN CA. THE SNOW BIRDS AND RIVH INDUSTRALISTS OWN FL NOW. ABOUT AS BAD AS CA.
Every year there are more laws and fees attacking Livaboards in California. Even the beautiful boats and financialy sound people are hated here by the landLORDS
This is sad. What if they want to live and not be apart of a big society? A few people are moving off grid to avoid cramped cities. Then dealing with government officials who only priority seems to be to collect taxpayers dollars and do as little as possible to help clean up the communities
So California is attacking the homeless, the RV living people and now the boaters? Those people out in the water aren’t bothering people or in anyone’s way. I like the boat dock people trying to work out a deal with the boaters though.
As someone that wants to live aboard my boat I have to say TAKE CARE OF YOUR DAMN BOAT! These peoples lack of concern for their own homes and for themselves for that matter is not only causing problems for themselves by make land owners want them gone, but also causing problems for others. This crap right here is why no one can get insurance for a liveaboard vessel. Insurance companies hear you want to live aboard your boat and this is what they picture in their minds. If they can't maintain their boats in safe operating condition good riddance. Your making the rest of us look bad. Get your sh;t together.
Even an immigrant with language barrier can make a living and has a place to stay. Most homeless people are born here in the United States and have a strong body. They need to take a look at themselves what they did wrong. If it's choice then don't complain.
"if we get them onto a slip, then they can get jobs and take care of themselves"..... that lady just completely assumed that she knows the type of lifestyle that each and every one of those people needs to live. There is no personal choice. Get them in the slip so that they have to start paying the rental fee and then they will have to get a job, which will give the city more money. Thats all it is about.
So, instead of having less homeless people on the streets of CA, you will have more. Let them live on their boats. CA seems to have an unofficial "riff raff" policy against some people.
It makes sense that those who are ok with drinking poison, are also ok with injecting poison. It also makes sense that those who think pointing out a logical consistency, would make anyone look ignorant but themselves. *Yes, those who grasp the fact that poison is bad, also grasp the fact that poison is bad. LOL
It is clear; few people like the poor and homeless living in our neighborhoods, yet they do the least to support funding to end poverty... no, I am not talking about socialist handouts, but bootstrap workshops and sweat equity programs to empower those who are willing to try to improve their lifestyle.
dont get this poor folk need somwhere to live if they got a boat it needs morings but when price is to high they find a free place untill the rich folk start complaining i bet if they were out in middle of the ocean they would find out some rich folk complained the police asked them to moved on
sad that the city is spending money dealing with essentially a non issue this is your tax heavy goverment at work taxation = fascism de-fund the government
Jeb Bush passed a law in FL protecting anchoring rights for boaters. Boating Corporations like West Marine, BoatUS etc. formed an organization called Seven Seas something and lobbied FL politicians to protect their customers whom spend lots of money and wanted anchoring rights protected. It worked. Miami Beach still violates the law however.
Most marinas require at least $1million in insurance to stay. You have to cover the risk of damage to other boats and the marina itself. Some areas require enough insurance to cover environmental damages and recovery/ disposal of your boat if it sinks. Anchoring out has always been the favourite way to save money. As long as you are not in the shipping channel, it is legal (except Bora Bora where you need permission and they will charge you to anchor!) The empty/ derelict boat owners should be contacted. Each boat has a registry number/ licence on the side. Easy enough to find the owner. If they can't be contacted, registry is invalid, remove it for "environmental reasons". If occupied, require insurance. It would probably be required to be put into law on the state level, though.
Floating homes shouldn’t be illegal just because you find it to be an eye sore if they ain’t harming anyone then they should be left alone otherwise they be outside your business making your business lose business hopefully the rich would move so they can take your homes
People still commenting from this 2 year old news.. ( it's been about 2 years now since half moon bay..pillar point harbor confiscated my 50 ' motor sailor..and many others who were anchor outs.. destroying them with a bulldozer..
They should get rid of the unsightly garbage shows and tell the rest yo clean their boats up so they are not an eyesore, hard to tell ppl they can't live on the ocean
It's easy to feel bad for the boaters, but what's actually missing from all these emotional hit pieces, is what impact the boaters ACTUALLY have on the water. Primarily, are they dumping human waste into the bay, along with other waste?
