We just run the line out and when we get to the end we just cut it, tie a loop knot on the end and attach the Blue Ocean Gear GPS bouy's to it. When we reconnect we tie a blood knot to reconnect the mainline. Our mainline is 3.5mm mono

There are various causes for it, a main one being current. If you set your gear directly into a current the gear can collapse upon itself and the current can drag it down into the depths, once a section starts to get dragged down it creates more drag and will pull the whole line down, never to be seen again. Another cause I have had in the past is a couple of large swordfish close together will drag the gear down and again, once the current gets a hold of it the drag will pull it down. In the Southern Bluefin fishery in Southern New South Wales the shear volume of fish will drag the gear down so we tend to shoot very small lines and haul the gear again soon after setting before it all gets dragged down.
