About the Koshu Festival
The history of the Echigo Festival dates back to the Edo period. Originally, the festival was held as the Gion Festival of Yasaka Shrine and was known as Tennosama. Later, the Echigo Shrine was built as a result of a merger of shrines, and the festival gradually developed.
In 1989, the name of the festival was changed to "Echigo Festival" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the town's incorporation and to make it a town-wide festival.
On the day of the festival, portable shrines are paraded through the town during the daytime, and various events such as yosakoi are held, followed by the pulling of floats in the evening.
On top of the floats, which are brought out from each of the six districts of the town, the Koshu-bayashi, a musical performance that is a descendant of the Edo Kanda-bayashi (Edo Kanda music), is performed. The floats are accompanied by dancing figures such as Amakusa, Sotomichi, and Hyottoko to the lively rhythm of the music.
