(Excerpt from the Black Institute email on June 19, 2021)
Juneteenth recognizes June 19, 1865, when Black enslaved people in Texas were finally given their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
On Thursday, June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became the newest federal holiday and the first commemoration of our independence from slavery. We celebrate Black freedom, Black liberation, Black excellence, and the determination of our Black ancestors who fought for freedom and justice.
