The familiar melody was from variation 18, you’ve reacted to it but a long while ago. Rach made it by inverting the original paganini theme which you hear throughout the rest of the piece (sort of playing it upside down) among other changes. it’s really genius

16:32 . . . Gidi asks if we know this melody . . . yep, theme used in multiple movies, "Somewhere in Time" and "Groundhog Day"

BRO i don't know how to tell you this enough. but you are NOT done with rachmaninoff till you hear his symphonic dances. I'm not on patreon but bro even if you don't do it on cam you owe it to yourself to have a listen, trust.

I second this. I was introduced to the Symphonic Dances at a concert a few years ago and it blew me away. The finale had me on the edge of my seat! The conductor allowed the tam-tam to continue to ring after the very last note, and afterwards I had to seek out a recording that did the same. Leonard Slatkin's account with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on Naxos is a barn-burner of a performance, and one of my personal favorite CDs!

I would say this and isle of the dead is also a really great orchestral piece by rach

Hahah I love how passionate this guy is for Symphonic Dances, yes they are amazing, but all other orchestral works as well. All 3 symphonies, and The Bells! Isle of the Dead is the gloomiest piece ever written.

Yes! The tam tam needs to ring like a final bell! I have no idea how most of conductors haven't figured this out, such a pity.

the ad in the middle of the final is criminal.

This piece is based on a theme from Paganini's Caprice No. 24, originally for the violin. This theme itself is very famous, and many composers wrote pieces based on this particular theme. For example, Liszt wrote an insanely difficult etude based on the theme. (S. 141/6) Maybe you should listen to that too. I recommend Lubyantsev's performance on RU-vid.

One of the true genius compositions of all time! The eighteenth variation is just the beginning of its wonders. Terrific performance by the way.

You should probably listen to recordings of Rachmaninov playing Chopin or even his own works!(many grand musicians considered him as the best pianist of all times)

Piece is known for variation 18, but so many great variations. Such a creative, explosive reworking of the original theme in var 8 (5:12). Can't believe var 9 (7:10) is same theme. Then comes var 10 (8:29), so pretty. The lead up of var 17 (13:50) is so mysterious, but once var 18 (15:39) kicks in, it's so satisfying.

That melody from the 18th variation may also sound familiar because it's been used in other media, probably most notably in "Groundhog Day" where it's the piece that Bill Murray learns at one point ^^

Hi Gidi! Lots of love from Finland. I suggest you listen and react to Four Spirits, a beyond-cello concerto by Abel Selaocoe, if you manage to find it anywhere. Even better, go hear it in person, if possible! If you can't listen to the concerto online, maybe start with his other pieces.

23:33 Gidi loves him some Dies Irae theme. (May I recommend Symphonic Dances and Symphony No. 3? Those are great too, also a similar style. All late works.)

From 6'19" to 6'28" you hear the Dies Irae theme from Gregorian chant. It dates from 13th century. Berlioz used it too in his Symphonie Fantastique.

It's also been popular in pop culture. From the main theme of The Shining and Dead By Daylight, to some little nods to it on soundtracks like on Frozen 2, Demon Slayer, The Lion King, and Attack On Titan. It has always depicted one thing: Impending doom.

Gidi you need to react to the Devils trill sonata (Tarini’s sonata). It is one of my favorite pieces of all time. Tartini made a deal with the devil in his dream, and in turn the devil played the violin, who stunned tartini with how beautiful he played. When he woke up, he hurried to write it down, but struggled to remember everything. Tartini said that even though this was his best work, it paled in comparison to what he heard in the dream.
