The reason why Knuckles looks like that is because in the animation this mod is based off of, Tails planted a bomb in Knuckles’s phone and blew him up.

Basically Tails became a cult follower believing he was supposed to be Sonic's best friend. He ends up killing Knuckles and Shadow and tries to kill Amy. Also in this Boyfriend's mic is rigged with explosives.

Just to expand a bit on the mod, it's based off of the animated series that the youtube channel mashed has created. It reveals these so called "secret histories" of famous games (which would explain the name of the mod) and explains some sort of secret lore. I would recommend giving it a watch to fully understand it but the gist of the sonic story is basically sega gave sonic a best friend in hopes of making more money. Tails has a crazy obssession with sonic and anyone he deems to be getting in the way of their relationship he removes from the picture which is why you see knuckles in such a state. Just some info if u wanted to know.

The red flashing means your mic is about to explode, you throw it away when you press spacebar, tails rigged every mic you have to explode, because he has gone that far off the rails

I have a really bad cold and it's been going off and on all week.. Currently also going through insomnia as well.. Can't get no sleep like I used to.. The red flashing around the screen was actually a 💣 in BF's mic and you could see a red light in it. The animation when you press space shows BF throwing away the mic and pull a new one out of thin air.
