WWI 1914: Europe's Civil War If only it had ended that Christmas...before it de-evolved into a senseless war of attrition and an actual world war.

Do you know when the war will end? "After our spring offensive I should think" Even though they didn't shoot at each other, that German officer went home feeling pretty burned.

@TalonMercenary From what I've read, the men were rotated regularly anyway. So, the guys who took part in the truce were moved to the rear or one of the secondary trenches and new troops - with no happy memories of the enemy - were brought in. Thus, the fighting continued. They also issued warning and ordered artillery bombardments before Christmas 1915 to make sure it did not happen again.

The motorbike and girlfriend story the German related is actually true. An English officer serving in the Scots Guards was the one he told it to (just as here, an Englishman amongst scots)

How cud they celebrate and sing together, then fight and blow each other to bits the next day. It is so tragic. Total obedience to authority.

Those were some really interesting and intellectual comments and then how the helmets compare and i agree with the arguments quoting Christianity as improving equality but it was still pretty slow progress and i like the Germans helmets too they are cool

The Christmas truce was between the regular armies of 1914 who, in the words of Robert Graves, regarded the matter as an exchange of courtesies between professional soldiers. The no holds barred battles of 1916 - 1918 were fought largely by volunteers.

The spikes on the helmets were actually for channeling away slashes of cutting weapons...

The song the Germans don’t like. My Grandfather served in France from 1915. He would sit me on his knee and sing one of the popular songs. Told me that every time they sang it, the Germans would send a shell over. I keep listening to the songs on these clips, trying to remember which one, driving me mad!

I always felt like good guy and bad guy wasn't super clear in WW1.

Millions of Europeans have killed each other on countless battlefields for years upon years, for people to realize that it's better to cooperate and face the world and the future, as one Europe united in diversity and peace! Better late than never...

@JordoF6 Most of the British soldiers in this scene are Scottish with about three Englishmen. The historical reason for this is that until after the Second World War, regiments were divided according to where you came from, so the Welsh, English and Irish would be in other parts of the trenches, but most officers were English (Partly due to the large population compared to the rest of the UK, and partly due to more people able to afford higher education in southern England at the time).

There is a wonderrfull song about this by Mike Harding, called christmas eve 1914, listen then let me know, made me a grown man weep. Also a wonderfull ww2 story called 'the shepherd' its a book of short stories...regards and PEACE to all everywhere-p.s tks for the comments sent my way

@kopynd The British and German people are rather civilised and honest. I have lived in Germany and England and I am amazed at the similarities between the races . Sadly they both have extremists who know little or nothing about history, yet they rant and rave about things they neither know or understand. It will never change!

apart from the idiotic comment....this scene is truly a profound moment....Christian men, from both sides, and without official orders, calling a truce on Christmas day....appriensive at first...only to find, that they are just the same people..just different uniforms...again. very profound scene, in a great all round film...

This is why war is pointless, we are all human it dosen’t matter if you are german, british, canadian, austrian, american, turkish or australian this proves that they are all just humans no different from each other. It is insane that none of the leaders tried to make peace out of this.

Curiosity and respect, civilised behaviour and good manners bring people together. Then the political realities drive them apart. No fratanising with the enemy. I wonder if this happens during the War on Terror? Christmas is probably not the time. What about UN world peace day?

The French didn't participate. If the Germans wanted a Christmas Party the French felt they should have it in Berlin, not occupied France. ;-)
