The Ohio Lunatic Asylum was destroyed in 1991 but the final resting place of its patients still remain. Join me and my friend Kim as we pay our respects to some of history’s most mistreated & misunderstood people at these long forgotten cemeteries in Columbus, Ohio.

My sister was there because she tried to commit suicide. They electrified her. My mom went and got her and now she is really mental! She died at the age of 44. R.I..P. Carol. I love and miss you every day!

Very Interesting! My Dad’s family is from Ohio and I currently live about 33 miles from Columbus. He had a grandfather who passed away at the Athens Insane Asylum from syphilis of the brain. Later in my life, my ex-mother in law spent a great deal of time in and out of psychiatric hospitals in the early 70’s. She underwent many courses of electro shock therapy. Poor souls…

The second cemetery you visited was also used by the Ohio Penitentiary to bury those who had been executed or died in prison so a lot of the graves (the ones from the 20th century in particular) are penal burials

Right directly behind Twin Valley Hospital is the graveyard you were looking for. The public cannot access this cemetery due to the Maximus Security Mental Hospital is right beside it. I worked at Twin Valley and I was given access to go back there in 2003. The graves are only marked with patient numbers and the Specimen marker is there. I took pictures of it. The original mental hospital was located on Broad Street right where the freeway is now. it burned in 1876. The second cemetery you were in is the graveyard of the first mental health hospital. You'd think that since these people were in State Cemeteries, the State would take care of them instead of forgetting they even existed. Shame on the State of Ohio. You should be ashamed.

I really wanted to find the ‘specimen’ marker. I’m glad to know you were able to see it. I agree that the responsible party should be ashamed at the neglect of this important place in the city’s history. Thanks for watching and thanks for the information!

Kim, that was so kind to stop & give each person attention. I learned my Great-Grandmother on my Mother's side spent some time here at the Asylum. My Mom always wanted to know why but we could never find the records for her admittance. She's buried in Reynoldsburg at Silent Home Cemetery, Also, for a few years I worked at Loewendick Demolition. They razed (demolished) the former Asylum. Other things of note, we the locals always called this the "Hilltop". Also, my Mom told me that one of her high school field trips was to the Asylum. That's so strange! Why in the world would a school take a field trip to the "Hilltop"? Remember, her saying how much it had an impact on her. Don't think she knew at that time that her Grandmother had spent time there. Also, didn't know this cemetery existed & the cousin (Dad's side) I mentioned being buried at Greenlawn Cemetery was a RN at the newest mental health hospital located here. Small world that keeps on revolving.

I found your channel from the Thurmond, WV video and I am definitely adding it to my travel list. I live in Ohio and we recently visited Hanoverton, OH (if you haven't been there you need to go, lookup Spread Eagle Tavern) and they have a really great cemetery with a lot of history. It was very sad to see the graves so overgrown in this video and although most weren't overgrown in Hanoverton, they were broken. My Wife and I spent a few hours this past October picking up the pieces and standing them back up. It was really rewarding. Keep doing what you're doing! I subbed on both of my accounts to make sure I don't miss the next video.

Keep in mind that "insane asylums" were also dumping grounds not only for mentally ill, but also homeless, poor, indigent, unwanted kids, etc etc. They were often overcrowded and abuse was too damn common. It's entirely possible that many patients had no official records or recorded names.

A lot of "treatments" caused death. In some asylums patients were intentionally infected with diseases in the hope the fever would be curative, lobotomies could easily go wrong, patients were experimented on and neglected. In the time of eugenics, which began in the 1930s many states allowed patients to be sterilized whether the patient wanted to be or not. diseases like tb were very common and sanitary conditions could be questionable.

Very interesting place .. also the architecture for the first one you guys went to when it was rebuilt I believe was a Kirkbride floor plan… Which was usually Gothic style Victorian architecture… The Athens insane asylum is still standing and has the very similar look also a kirkbride

"It's cool being dead"???? Anyway, that was fun! It's been several years since I visited that second (older?) cemetery and am very surprised it's no longer being taken care of. Back then, it was still being mowed and you could drive back to it. Interesting note: the father of an old friend was the director of the hospital back in the 50's and 60's. I'll have to ask her if she remembers anything about the cemeteries.

Okay, I was watching this and have been to this cemetery several times. Actually the entire field with the fences is the cemetery. Not just the headstones. If you walk out through the field every few feet is a brick the just had the patients number on it. Easily 200+ graves within the cemetery.
