You’re keeping the rotary community together and moving it forward. Thanks for the tutorial. No matter how many times the bush gets beat it’s always nice to see others point of view to build these great engine we call rotary.
Put another sacrificial oil control ring on top of the ring you’re installing and use a piece of 2x4 on top of that to apply even pressure and press in smoothly, and lots of silicone grease made it easy for me
Worked in a machine shop assembling bearings and this is what we would usually do. Put old seal over new seal, put a flat metal plate on stop, and tap in a circle with a rubber mallet.
You asked for newbie comments. Yes, your videos are helping me learn and feel more confident for whenever the day comes I build one. I got into the rotary world buying a super low mile RX-8 so I hope I don't have to build that anytime soon but last July I spent money I probably shouldn't have buying those 4 derelict FBs hoping I can save at least one. I have dismantled, cut up and sold most of one of those. I just recently tore down its engine with the idea of selling parts in mind to replace lost money from my truck's transmission disaster. Unfortunately I found the housings are trash. But then Kurt Robertson spent an hour on the phone with me convincing me to hang onto it with an eye towards eventually having enough parts to do a build so I can learn and perhaps someday become the "WalMart of engine builders" as a little side hustle to support my hobby :)
got my spare 6 port in the garage taken apart. Very convenient you're uploading these right now. Downside of the spare is it's a 230k mile 13b with front iron coolant jacket failure, definitely need a new front iron and rotor, no clue how long it was running on 1 rotor but it was a running rx7 when it hit the junkyard. Figure it was never rebuilt based on the 3peice apex seals and the sand and gravel in the coolant passages. Rotor looks like it was recovered from the titanic
I think I have seen 100 videos about building/rebuilding rotary engines (some from the “big names”) and I do not remember seeing one with this amount of detail. To be honest I never even knew there was an o-ring inside a metal piece for the oil control rings. I have a 13B-MSP that I tore down out of a friend’s RX-8 which I hope to rebuild soon. This video (and your other videos) gave me the info I need to go through with it without so much worry. You da man! I don’t know how you don’t have more viewers, but I’m glad you are keeping the rotaries alive through your own work and by showing us how to do it.
I’ve been watching for almost a year now and in the first 3-4 months of having my fc (saved it from being LS swapped😎) I’ve learned so much from this channel. Helps clear the doubts and potential ways certain things can fail or ways I can mess up my stuff. The engine is apart now and my plates and housings were refurbished and retreated with nitrite, Rx7 Specialites did the work, they got a RU-vid channel too if you guys want a professional shop pov, but I prefer the small shop with accessible tools along with cool little tricks on how to make the process go that much easier
Props to you, I have a K20a2 Longblock and a series 2 fb and as much as I get bugged about it by friends, I'd never swap it into my fb, I'd rather watch Eric succeed, fail and succeed again for us with the rotories, I love the honesty that he puts into all his content and is also why we are here
To your other question about piston builds. Back in the 80s I built a couple of air cooled VWs. One of those taught me a hard lesson about reusing cylinder heads by swallowing an exhaust valve. Then in 2018 I started with a reconditioned block, crank, rods and heads from a machine shop and built a 4.7 for my 2003 Ram 1500. The same one I keep mentioning on here that grenaded its transmission (a planet gear exploded I wish I could post pics here). That engine has gone 15K miles since the build.
I've rebuilt a couple piston engines but I've never opened up a rotary engine. I owned an fc which had engine issues and I took the easy way out and swapped in 2 different engines actually, one was a 1.8t Miata engine and the other was an iron block 5.3. missed the rotary even though they are a pain compared to many other engines so now I've got an rx8. It runs great at the moment but I'm trying to prepare myself for the day I do need to rebuild the renesis. So maybe rebuild your low comp rx8 engine after you swap in the new one! 😁
As always, dat video is good as a piece of cake! Never rebuild a Rotary motor, I'll normally get my Lil Stu (same color as your eheh) in a few weeks! So it's in my plans! And yup, seem to be easy peasy! Can't wait! Continu like that!
Been watching your videos as I get all my parts cleaned up and ready to rebuild my engine, I took it apart myself and it’s my first rebuild so I’m definitely nervous but hopefully it’ll go good
My first 1974 RX4 engine rebuild I cut my thumb on the oil control ring. I have a street port and ran it lean continuously due to garbage in the fuel tank on a road trip. It smokes badly now. Just redid the brakes and ready for another rebuild. I love your videos and subscribed.
Once again, great video, looking to get a second motor to build for race car as a spare. 12a would be nice but would do a 13b, just need to find the motor. Currently running a 12a.
9:46 I know this video is a little old but I saw on a rotary revs video they used an old ring that sits on top of the new one, then placed a flat piece of wood on top of that and pressed evenly into the rotor with their body weight.
Very informative i do have had build piston eng and am geting the confidence to build my first rotary i got a few on my shop that i will like to mess whit .
Picked up my first rotary last month (500$ rx8) smokes more than me but still starts right up. Looking at the price of a jdm motor compared to rebuilding your videos have been giving me confidence in my ability to rebuild what I have on a budget. Hoping I crack the motor open and don’t find busted up housings.
Awesome work love your clips.... Can I ask how long you can leave oil control rings installed in the Rotor before assembling the Engine ? Can the Orings swell ?
Hey thank you bro for the awesome videos !!!!!!!! I bought a 2004 rx8 automatic so I bought the car with the front rotor low compression I’m a backyard mechanic very handy but I didn’t have the time to put another motor in or rebuild the original so I hired a mechanic to replace the motor the car runs great till I’m on the highway for 30-40 minutes then the temp doesn’t change but dog ads power it just lags I then changed the coil paks and plugs it keeps coming up cyclimfer 1 misfire on my tester supposedly he put new plugs on any ideas on why it looses power. It runs great cold and up ti temp for 20 min then dogs out
How do i get the oil rings out??? At this point, I'm about to leave them in and hope they are not that dirty and the ultra sonic cleaner will do the job with them in. 😢
Again freely admitting I've never built a rotary it seems to me the trick for that outer oil seal would be a properly sized short piece of plastic pipe to apply pressure evenly all round and do it in a shop press.
I just picked up an rx8 in limp mode. I read to clean the omp connector and grease it. Did that and still nothing (the connector and sensor were green). It starts right up but the traction control and steering lights stay on and it revs up super slow. It feels like it'll be solid if I can just figure this out. Any ideas?
It does have p0661 and p2259. ( Not sure if the p0661 will cause it to be in limp mode, do t think the other code would) And the guy I bought it from showed me that it had a p1687 ( which will definitely cause limp mode from what I've read) but I haven't seen that one on my cheap scanner yet. Should I take a risk on a new to me omp?
I also had the idea that they might all be connected by a ground which may be bad but it's difficult to find a wiring diagram/ repair manual for this car. I'll pay I just need to know it's legit.
i have a dorito, im contemplating ripping it to bits, reason...im suspicious of meddling by bogan fingers, 0 experence, all youtube - also for you oil ring stick in bit...go see a machineist to make a ring that diameter/ or buy a 150+mm socket
