Yep, I've had to run two oil coolers on a couple of bikes....really surprised me the first time...that was on the 2005 Road King. No matter what I tried I could not get my temps down until adding the second oil cooler (this was at the advice of Jamie, a performance engine builder). I also had to run a second oil cooler on the 2011 Tri Glide to get the temps down to 220-230.

I love the rooster! Great series Kevin, I look forward to each episode. Question how are you measuring the oil temp?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 года назад
😂 Yeah, he goes off all day long. Glad you're enjoying the series. We use the HD analog gauge, the HD Digital gauge and a Jess dial gauge. All temps are taken at the tank. This is NOT the location where the oil is the hottest. But it is where it is easiest to get a reliable read on it. That is why we have a max target of 230 degrees...that gives some cushion before the 260-270 mark, which is when the additive package (viscosity modifiers) start deteriorating.

Spend 30k on a Harley and it’s up to me to add oil coolers , oil filter relocation kit, fans ? Just so the engine doesn’t grenade? 120 years selling motorcycles and this is the best they can do? One guy designing parts when the company has hundreds deigning and testing? Have you ever considered contacting Harley and letting them know their bikes run hot? Thirty grand and I can’t ride it during riding season.

First, thank you for taking the time to do these videos and answer qustions. I have a 2019 Road King standard. I added the Jims force flow fan and a couple of months ago I was riding back from Arizona in about mid 95 degrees. After pulling a long up hill run, The hottest i saw oil temp at the oil tank dip stick was 243 degrees. I measured the head temps at the spark plugs at 298 front and 332 rear with a heat scan gun after about 1.5 hours. The rest of the run home oil temp was 234 degrees & 285 FC & 318RC at spark plugs. This particular ride i was by myself with about 20 lbs of luggage. My wife does go with me at times and we will also pack up about 60lbs of cloths and other items for Sturgis or other longer runs. Would a jagg 6 row oil cooler be a good addition? Also installing the automatic bypass or manual bypass valve. Thank you I advance & and appreciate your suggestions and or advice.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Год назад
Thank you for the comment and for the kind words. 👍 Yes, a Jagg 6 row will add to the cooling capacity, and a 6 row with an oil filter relo will give you even better cooling. Links to both below. The heat scan gun is not an accurate way to get engine temp. (see video below on that subject) There is a heat sensor in the front of the rear cylinder that is used by the ECM, that is the only accurate way to get an engine temp reading. The Power Vision will display that for you as a gauge labeled "ET". 2021 FLHTK twin cooled, watching your videos great info. Choosing between 3 options which is the best bet mighty mites, jims fan, oil cooler and filter relo. kit? Honestly I don't like the look of the relocated filter and I drag my boards. What is the best option? Thanks
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 года назад
It depends on what kind of riding you do, in what ambient temps, and what your current engine temp is and oil temp. If you're oil temp is getting well past 230F, like up into the 250's or higher, then an oil cooler is definitely important. Don't worry about dragging the floorboards and getting anywhere close to the relocated oil filter. It will drag the boards, the board brackets and the slip-ons and still not touch the relocated oil filter. It is tucked up and in quite a bit. Unless pointed out, very few people will even see it. If your engine temp is getting up to over 300F, that definitely should come down. At 270F of engine temp HD ECM is pulling timing in an attempt to cool it down and prevent accelerated wear. I would like to run the oil filter relocation that mounts up front on the down tube, can I do that with the auxiliary oil cooler or do I need to relocate the filter back farther under the floor board? Thanks for putting out this great information, it has been very helpful to me.

You have a few choices. use the oil filter relo that goes under the rear passenger peg/floorboard. OR You can put both the cooler and the oil filter relo on the left downtube. It is very tight, but we have seen some Customers do that. OR You can do what I did on my Softail...I put the oil filter relo on the left downtube and the oil cooler on the right downtube. What is the impact on 114ci OEM oil pump's oil pressure when adding additional fluid demand for hoses, oil cooler and oil filter relocation kit?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 года назад
There is no measurable difference when using a gauge that measures in 1 lb. increments. I say that because we have tested and several of our Customers have tested, and seen no variation in pressure. If there is a difference, it is less than 1 lb. The two biggest "logjams" in the OEM Harley set up are some of the smaller oil passages in the engine and the paper oil filter. All the channels in the oil cooler, oil filter relo, and hoses are much larger than some of the smaller OEM points.

Hi @Isovidiu, Glad to hear you are liking the videos. We have never seen the water pump relocated, there may be a way for it to be made to fit, but it will take quite a bit of plumbing work, and also some wiring work. It is better, in our opinion, to leave it where it is and to put an oil cooler behind the left side lower fairing vent. It you ever don't want air flowing across your oil cooler, simply close the vent. That is what we do on all of our Twin Cooled bikes. Here is a link to the oil cooler kit that bolts right on to your bike. www.dkcustomproducts.com/oil-filter-relocation-oil-cooler-combo-pkg-harley-touring-dk-ofr-dcoc-2wh.htm Here is a video showing the installation process. It’s the approximately the same measured with two dipsticks and my wifes meat thermometer even in 80+ degree temperatures, running 75 on the interstate or cruising below 45 on twisty hilly backroads. Oil is circulating, it’s not running lean and shows no Sign of the timing being off. Can you offer any insight as to what my be causing this
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 года назад
That's a great problem to have...when compared with all the TC's and M8's running so hot. Ideally you want to see oil temps in the 190-200f range. Measuring the oil temp at the tank, especially if you have an oil cooler, means that the oil is probably up closer to 200F in the engine. If you have an oil cooler, try making a "jacket" for it, to stop air flowing thru it. If the temps get up to 180-190 at the tank, then remove the cover from the oil cooler.

Can adding a second oil cooler and fan in line and conjunction with the factory oil cooler and fan be a good way to decrease heat?

Yes, running an auxiliary oil cooler is what Many folks do to keep the heat down. I ran my first one that way back in 2005, and did what you mentioned...one of them with a fan. Something wide enough to have two heavy duty fans behind it that are removable as a separate unit.. if the fans get old and wobbly you just pull out four bolts or screws and remove it without disturbing the heat exchanger and the oil lines. Somebody give Elon Musk a call... I'm going to check out Trask and see if they got something going on to that end.. there's got to be something out there that holds about 2 quarts of oil that can shed heat outside the motor to give that oil some relief... something race Duty.. @@d.sandell2555 A few thoughts- 1. Oil heat is the symptom of other heat. Oil is not the source of the heat. 2. The metal is where the heat comes from. 3. Better to cool the metal than the oil...then the oil does not get as hot. 4. Cooling the oil will help overall engine heat, but not enough to get it in the safe range. 5. So cooling the oil is one part of an overall strategy to get engine heat down. We have. I purchased one for my own bike a while back. Went to install it and did not like that I had to modify the frame to get it installed. I ground down part of the frame & installed it anyway. The cooling of the oil was much less than an oil cooler out in the wind, even though it had a much larger surface area. We thought this was unique to the bagger I was testing. So we purchased another Oil Bud for a different bike. We installed it per the instructions, did our heat tests. Same thing. Only cooled about 60% as well as the Jagg oil cooler that is right out in the wind. Standing still in stop n go traffic, we did not see a difference in oil temps due to the larger surface area.

Will it fit on Sportsters?

Yes. All the oil coolers at the following link are designed to work on a Sportster. www.dkcustomproducts.com/sportster-c155.htm This oil filter relocation at the following link is not needed for the oil cooler on a Sporty, but if you want one, it will fit on a Sportster. www.dkcustomproducts.com/cnc-oil-filter-relocation-kit-sportster-dyna-softail-touring-dk-cnc-ofr-uni.htm

@@DKCustomProducts And that answers my question. I will have to work up a build one piece at a time starting with the Outlaw Filter. Cooler means longer life and better performance. More oil capacity in the oil cooler means cooler. You have too much as far as accessories. My wallet is going to hurt.

@@exexpat11 Step at a time is how we do it also. That way you know which mod is providing what benefit, vs. doing a bunch at one time. Appreciate your business, I believe you will like the benefits of the mods. 👍

I like video.. but have a question.. Is Harley Davidson, Ignorant, negligent or what? They have been producing V-Twins from the beginning of time. One would think, they could cool their machines right out of the box.

Or what is the answer. They are trying to keep the nostalgic look and sound, while meeting stricter and stricter guidelines from, not just the EPA, but also regulatory agencies in other countries. Here is a video that explains a little bit about their predicament. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rWOdQOtDv6A.html And here is a video where they have produced a bike that does not run hot...we will see if it sells or now- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mzzc-ydotOQ.html

Not sure what you are referring to. I've never heard of an evo going 1 million miles without a rebuild, regardless of what oil was used.
