Great video, thanks for the info... I have a tip regarding E10 bolts... If an E10 socket is not available or if space is tight and it is difficult to get a ratchet onto any E10 bolt, you can use an 8mm (or 5/16") wrench to get it out. You have to be extremely careful to keep the wrench pushed onto the bolt itself as you loosen it so as not to strip the teeth, so use one hand to push onto the bolt and one hand to loosen it. Not the most ideal method but for those instances when it seems the manufacturer designed a part in a way that makes it mpossible to remove, we have to get creative.

I did it! This was one of my toughest auto repair jobs ever. Why would they design it this way? Anyone thinking of trying this, make sure you don’t have large hands and have the proper tools! A magnet is a definite must because you will need to use that to position the e10 socket and reach in with the other hand to guide it onto the screw. Then reach in and connect a small ratchet to the socket with barely enough room to break loose the bolts. Then you remove the ratchet and use the socket to finish unscrewing. The same when you put the screw back on. A small 8mm wrench is handy as well for the 3rd bolt which is closest to the driver side. You’ll be doing a lot of this by feel. Putting the vacuum back on requires a lot patience and wiggling to get it in right. Overall I’m happy because I was able to get the part from a very low mileage car and replaced on my leaky 160k mileage car. Total cost $65 for the part and scratches/bruises on my hands and arms, 2.5-3 hours of my time. Total savings, over $500 if I brought it into the dealer.

Informative video. I have a 2010 C300 4matic Sport with M272. Just reached 150,000 so going through everything and noticed oily residue at these areas in the video. I planned on replacing the drip pan under the breather cover also while im at it. I checked and all the bolts require an E10 socket. I wasnt even aware that was a vacuum pump on the drivers side, didnt know what it was. I dont have an actual E10 torx wrench, just sockets. Hoping either an 8mm or 5/15 closed end wrench I have will work at cracking the bolts loose. This car is failry easy to work on but I find myself always having to buy new tools to get the job done.

Thanks! I will have my dealer check this out. The smell of burning oil is making me apprehensive to drive over long distances. I heard that this gasket and then an expansion plug, and cam-bore expansion plugs ( fairly economical) 🔌 could be the reason that I smelling burn oil. Thank you kindly, Dr G!

What saved me time is removing rubber hose behind MAF give me more space on left side what helped me remove bottom screw with both hands using 5/16 long socket!! After that was easy! Return is simple! Worst part is squize pump back align is easy just use mirror to see where that notch goes!

hi vacuum line connector (at 4:56) does have any rubber rings inside? my ML350-2014 vacuum line connector is wobbly and loose, moves about 1/4" back and forth and when pulled slightly you can hear vacuum leak. under vacuum it gets sucked to nozzle and do not notice any leak, but I think something is not right in this connection. May be previous mechanic forget to put the oring back after vacuum pump replacement?

This is not an easy DIY for the occasional DIY'er. May I suggest you remove the mass air flow meter for access to one bolt. Then remove the O2 sensor and get the bottom bolt from below. Almost impossible to get out (let alone back in) from above. Don't attempt it without having a 1/4" flex head ratchet and the correct 1/4" E10 socket. Harder than replacing the power steering pump on a M119....and that is saying something.

8mm (millimeter) ratcheting wrench works just fine ,but you’ll notice there are a lot of breaks in the video for off camera finagling of the bolts. One way I got the top right bolt in was to use a 8mm 1/4” drive socket and a ratcheting thumb wheel ratchet that has a knurled perimeter for gripping. Also the lower bolt is a real mofo and actually can be accessed from underneath to spin with a socket by reaching up past the exhaust. I used a 8mm socket on the top bolts with a flex head 1/4” ratchet to tighten. Some cars have a little different design such as the 204 I worked on and the booster tube would not swivel out of the way and the cowl drain needed to be moved to the side as well as unplugging the mass airflow sensor connector to gain better access. I was tempted to remove the mass airflow sensor entirely to gain better access which I will do in the next one I run into. Note: the new part will not snap into place if your keyway on the pump is not aligned with the slot on the camshaft. If it snaps into place you’re in good shape.

I have seen two videos on doing this job and with the edits it looks pretty simple, it’s not! To break the right bolt I used the socket held with vice grips, worked great. The bottom bolt is a real pain to get back in. Removing the throttle body is a good idea.

@@HowtoAutomotive This car has 106,000 miles on it. Car is running fine, so I'm thinking seal replacement will take care of the leak there. I have an 08 c300 and my vacuume pump failed. I purchased an aftermarket one,looked the same accept the aftermarket had to small metal ears that stick out that line up with the back of the cam. Worked great for about 20 minutes then once again my brakes get super hard. Took it off and to my horror the little metal ears sheared off. Don't buy aftermarket crap buy mercedes original parts,it may save your life.

No wonder these things are unreliable, no hose clamps on hoses?
@omars.3021
@omars.3021 6 лет назад
Hose clamps aren't needed and in this case, lack thereof was not the problem. The oil leak on the oil separator happens because the gasket/o-ring fails due to heat. The hose, on the other hand, and even without a clamp, is pretty tight around the flared pipe it goes on. (In fact, Brian, and after reinstalling the oil separator, should have pushed the hose it in further over the pipe to the point where it goes over the notch that is n the pie itself!
