Follow along as I do an oil painting of a cowboy and his horse looking out into the Grand Canyon for the 2018 Mountain Oyster Art Show quick finish event in Tucson Arizona. Along the way I share my thoughts and techniques for painting this challenging subject and show you some scenes at the quick finish event. In a quick finish, you have a limited amount of time (2 hours in this challenge) to complete your painting and then have it offered for sale to the audience.

Humbled by His presence is a wonderful title for this picture. When I first walked up to the edge of the Grand Canyon, it took my breath away. I felt the presence of God there.

This video was just what I needed today! I have painted in acrylics for about 5 years, but I live in Montrose, CO where the air is very dry. I finally became so tired of fighting the drying time issue that I made the leap to oils recently. I have a lot of head knowledge, but just can’t seem to translate it into brush knowledge! Grrr... Your incredibly well done videos that not only explain your process, but remind me to keep painting, not get discouraged, and have faith that it will come, bring me back to center - thank you! I hope to meet you someday to thank you in person! I understand that making content like this takes a lot of time and effort and I truly appreciate your giving and kind spirit!

SUCH a great video. Wonderful advice.Great color and temperature vibrations. I wondered how people paint the Grand Canyon - just like everything else!! I’ve learned to not judge my paintings in the earlier stages. It just takes time and looking and looking and looking to choose the corrections I want to make. I used to get frustrated that things initially looked like failure, only to learn that if I’m patient, it can still be great. I put stuff up where I can see it for a couple of days and glance at it from time to time. I also photograph the picture and any reference I have at the end of each session, so I can see the progress.

...and this is why I subscribe to you. A pro at work with an exciting medium, subject and result. Awesome as usual Steve (love the painting title too!) The comments about light, value and process are invaluable. I can tell you, because I've been at this RU-vid thing for a bit, viewers don't realize what they are getting from you in terms of artistic wisdom and experience is rare. There is a lot of "pretend" junk on this social platform just to be frank. All that said, the clown with the hat, messing with your painting near the end?... hmm...you might consider letting him go. Who is that flunky anyway? 😉😉😂

Hi Steve! Thank you so much for your kind words about what I'm doing here on RU-vid... the feeling is very mutual. In fact, I had the courage to try watercolor because of watching your channel "The Mind of Watercolor", and Brian Ashmore's too! So, when I watch your videos, not only are you making me laugh (with you not at you, lol), but I'm really learning something. That's what I hoped I'd be able to do as well. Oh, about the clown in the hat at the end... it's my stunt double. I know, I know... he looks nothing like me, but the really talented doubles cost a fortune and he's all I could afford!

Are you painting the canvas yellow before you draw? or are you drawing after it dries?
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt 3 года назад
I tone my canvas with a yellow ochre wash and then when that's dry, I put the drawing on the canvas and seal it with a thin coat of Liquin so I don't lose the drawing as I paint. Hope that helps! Happy painting.

Love your channel. It’s such a great reference to tackling and simplifying complex subjects. So inspiring! Question: do you use an expensive DSLR camera to take photo reference of your subjects? I’ve been using my cell phone camera while painting plein air and notice a lot of the color and lighting is lost, especially in the shadows. Thanks!
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt 3 года назад
Both! I try to use the best camera i can, which usually means my Canon M50 shooting in raw. But I do use my cell phone if I'm out painting on location and don't have my dslr. You can improve your photos by lightening the shadows or dropping down the highlights in Lightroom or in Photoshop's camera raw filter (if you don't want the extra expense of paying for Lightroom). Or you can lighten how dark the shadows are in a simple levels adjustment in Photoshop, but the Camera Raw filter will give you a better result, IMHO.

I love the way you handle the landscape itself, especially the rocks in the foreground. The only thing I dislike is the idea that to make an effective painting of the Grand Canyon, you have to include a horse and a cowboy. A beautiful landscape in nature doesn't require a human presence, so why should it be required in a painting? Just because many of the potential clients are wearing cowboy hats?
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt 9 месяцев назад
Sorry you don't care for the figure. I paint what I love, not to please others. I always figure my audience will find me. After all, a quality product creates its own demand. I've painted the GC both ways and find both exhilarating, especially when standing there with it spread out before me. Paint on and thanks for watching!!

I am sure if I had the years left to me would by practising more be able to answer this question of mine. As a young man I was a Civil/Architectural Draughtsman so I can produce quite a decent outline, not on par with yours but not far off BUT you (as do so many artists) on your first light blocking you covered up many of your guidelines either totally or hard to see. I am not wanting to do paint by numbers when you keep exactly to the lines but I really can't see why you go to the trouble of doing so many outlines and shaded areas for your values and shadow areas to give your compostion the accuracy of the actual object and not use them.
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt 3 года назад
Hi, that is a great question. As far as my drawing on canvas goes, I seal the drawing with a thin coat of Liquin and so, if needed, I can wipe away some of the coverage of oil paint and always find my way back to the drawing. I don't need it on everything, since things like rocks or trees can vary widely and still look good, but it's important for me to be able to always have that drawing available if I need it. Like you said though, you have to paint in such a way as to not be a slave to that drawing or you'll end up with something that looks like a paint by numbers and there is nothing artistic about that. Edges are incredibly important. Hope that helps! Happy painting!!
@wakeupuk3860
@wakeupuk3860 3 года назад
Thank you a very fast reply. I am too lazy for the faff of using Liquin and don't want the smell in the house - thus use Watermixable Oils. I have to say the idea of wiping back to see the lines, I can't see you really doing that. If I may, can I give this as the reason, the lines area crutch that you still feel you need (ie important for me to be able to always have that drawing available if I need it) and having reached 'master' level that even when you cover up even though a novice like me can't see them, in your minds eye you can. When you paint you no longer see as a novice like me does and your confidence knows where to put that brush. I taught for 35 years on a wide range of topics to children, teenagers, students, teachers and adults at work as well as observe many people in their own field having reached a high level of mastery primarily due to many years doing so. I my self even though reaching modest levels of skills would never claim being a master of any of them except for teaching. Along that path I personally managed to retain something that so many teachers or highly skill people for some reason lose and that is how bloody hard and difficult it was when learning something, I think I can thank my father for endlessly getting angry with me and saying "It's obvious". But at the same time, I truly believe that to get that good at something especially requiring hand coordination skills, a master has to discard those feelings and those memories as the brain now considers them redundant and in turn creates deep instinctive hidden skills which to them are obvious and every one has. It is a bit like the chicken and egg situation because for me to comprehend, see what you see as you paint, how your brush lays the blocking area in the right place I have to be as good as you and to be as good as you I have to do the time and effort to do so.

How did you transfer the drawing onto the canvas? How/where did you draw it out - onto what- so that you could transfer? Secondly: how did you know how to lay in those deep purple shadows?! That seemed so wrong? But so good!!!!!! But I am annoyed: “it’s really not this difficult to do this” …. No- it is I appreciate the video so much!, I watch the entire video, seven times, three times in slow motion. When you make these videos, pretend like you’re talking to a six year old, who only has experience with Crayola Kranz. That would be wildly helpful.

Already in the early stages of the painting of the rock formations to the left, I felt in love with this picture. All those lovely blues in contrast to those warm, deep rusty-orange hues along side the lighter rockformations in all kinds of yellows... Oh, man...❤️ You are indeed a wizard. Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge - I really enjoy watching you work a lot!

Hi Steve, got my copy of Carlson Guide To Landscape Painting and I'm looking forward to the read. I felt it Steve Atkinson recommended it and called it his go to book then it has to be good. Thanks again, for the recommendation.

That's great Kathleen! Like I say, the language is kinda flowery, it's how they wrote early in the 20th century, but if you stick with it, it's full of pearls of painting wisdom and you'll be miles ahead. Good on you!!!

Would this painting ever get varnished? If so, how would that work with the buyers wanting to take it home, etc.? Great painting. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Brian, I sprayed it with a Kamar Varnish coat before giving it to the buyers, along with an offer to apply another coat of varnish when I was at the show the following year. I always offer to varnish any sold painting at any time for collectors in the future. Excellent question!

Cute to keep us all happy..so ill sign your name..lol I love your paintings.. I ve been holding off doing one similar but now I feel so much more confident to do it. I use to paint in oils all the time. Now that I know I can manipulate acrylics in much the same manner ..it sure saves in clean up and fumes when a small space to work in...thanks again truly inspired.

Oh that I was as good as you Steve. Fabulous and inspiring. I'd give my right arm and a few other vital organs. What do you use to do your under drawing on canvas? I'm curious.
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt 3 года назад
Hi Renny1953, first, thank you for your kind words. I have no doubt that if you keep at it, you'll get there!!! I get my preliminary drawing put down in one of two ways. The first way is to grid and draw it using a Prisma pencil. Here's a video on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ev5nUMbLPSI.html The second way is to have a copy of my drawing made to size and then chalk the back of the copy and draw over it using an ink pen. Here's that video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NemjLGSNhUU.html both ways I seal the drawing using a very thin coat of Liquin thinned with odorless mineral spirits, or Gamsol. Hope that helps!
