Oil painting can be a frustrating endeavour, add to that slow drying times and you could be tempted to switch to acrylics!
In this video, I discuss how alkyd mediums can significantly speed up the drying time when oil painting and compare the Winsor and Newton Liquin Original with M.Graham's Walnut Alkyd Medium.
***M.Graham did reply to my email a few days after I did this video. They said when the oil dries around the neck of the bottle, it will oxidise causing the slightly rancid smell. They suggested cleaning around the neck of the bottle to prevent this.
*** STORAGE: M.Graham have said to store this product in a dark closet or somewhere similar where it is not exposed to excessive temperatures or direct sunlight. DO NOT store this medium in the fridge as it will make the product separate.

Thank you for reviewing this Holly. I just picked up a starter set of M.Graham that includes this medium. I'm pretty intrigued by it as an alternative to the linseed based stand oil that I've always used.

@stevechmilar1215 I think you'll like it. Slightly thicker than regular linseed oil but not as thick as stand oil. Gives a nice gloss finish like stand oil 🤗

I don't know about the alkid version but I do know that the regular walnut oil from m Graham, is recommended to keep it in the refrigerator and that it can go rancid. Supposedly it's still good when rancid it just smells but I don't know if that's true

M. Graham did reach out to me and said not to put it in the fridge as it will separate, but to keep it in a dark cupboard. They also said the rancid smell may be just at the neck of the bottle where it's oxidised, and to just wipe around the neck to prevent the smell from occurring.

Thanks for the fridge (and not) tip. I was wondering if I needed to do anything to keep the oil smelling nice. Mine smells like mild salad dressing which makes painting a hungry endeavour. Especially when painting vegetable still life.

How many continuous wet paint workable hours does one get when using walnut alkyd medium
@hollyhartwell77
@hollyhartwell77 Месяц назад
Anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, depending on your climate. As soon as it starts to get tacky, I know I need to stop playing with it and let it dry completely. You can also extend this time slightly by oiling out with regular linseed oil, then using the alkyd in your paint mixes.

@@hollyhartwell77 - After some thought that's a fantastic help! The best I've had so far! At last I know how long I can depend on working in one area with wet paint to get that particular area right. Your information will also cause me to mentally focus better during that open wet paint time I can depend on. Here's a zillion "than you's!"
