I would add that a less experienced painter would tend to paint 'tighter' due to less confident strokes and over-blending. A looser style may come with experience , as you become more confident with your placement of the paint you tend to leave it alone. I am messy in some ways and precise and neat in others. I'm aiming towards a more painterly style, as that's my preference in a painting. Thank you for the video :)

Yes, I agree completely. I think 'less confident brush strokes' may also be simply more brush strokes for a single stroke result, instead of taking the time to think about brush strokes more consciously. The Sargent style may look 'fast and energetic', but I wouldn't be surprised if he actually painted fairly slowly, taking some time for each brushstroke.

I think that may be true of beginners but as a Leonardo student most of my life... tight and glazing are necessary disciplines of patience. I do love Sergeant's work, and others of course, but usually I'm wanting smooth and well done for layering to go well.

Impressionist detail, loose with a few tight spots or maybe tight at the centre of interest.

I think I am in between tight and loose. I saw this video 2 years ago but did not appreciate it. Now I totally understood what you are talking about. You consider both styles in your practice and pass no judgment. I recently registered in a course where the teacher has very loose style, like totally out of focus and disoriented types of brush strokes. When i painted my way which is neither loose nor tight, she was not happy. Well, I really appreciate and agree about what you said that its all in the head and the personality. She should watch this video so she does not pass judgment. Thank you and I am so happy to have come across this video once again and now I am subscribed❣

I love loose painting, you see just big blocks of colour when you get close, but when looking from far, the blocks give the ideas of the whole picture formed by your brain instead of your eyes. Kinda like life, if you looks at just one low point that you're facing currently, you'd be upset because that's all you see, but you'd never know the whole story of your life until you're able to stand back at the age of 70 and look back all the ups and downs you've been through in life. That's an accumulation of achievements, just like every brave brush stroke in a loose painting.

Definitely tight. Other artists have commented so often about it that I needed to better understand the difference between loose and tight. Van Eyck is an example of what I would aspire to although I would like to be versatile.

I'm a new painter and didn't understand tight vs loose. Thank you for clearing it up. I paint tight, but I want to paint looser. What you said about loose painters painting with energy, that's what I really love about some of my favorite landscape painters.

While naturally a tight painter (from photo references), I get much looser when I paint from life. My ultimate artistic goal is to find that "sweet spot" where the image is highly realistic from afar, but as you draw closer it appears to become almost abstract. I think we're all secretly aspire to be like Sargent! (Or Rembrandt!)

Thank you. I like very clear shapes. Not everywhere. But when I see a shape I like I will exaggerate the smoothness. Then I will make up for that somewhere else to have impasto or messy area. Like messy leaves crisp trunk or messy clouds crisp hair. I like to have both. I want to have it all and see it all. Then I do a version less ugly later. First I purposefully paint ugly. If it's up to me I like the ugly ones. But I always do another version reducing to more clean, simple shapes. I feel like the chaos is natural and part of my job is to make a little order and simplify for the viewer. But not for me. I'm ok with some chaos. I tried your Patreon but couldn't get to my account. I'm a tighty. I sort of feel bad about that though because there are so many beautiful loose(impressionism style) works that I admire. I feel I'm too much of a perfectionist... :S Great video. I always listening to your posts. Thanks.

I'm a graphite artist who deals mainly around the hyper-realism spectrum but now I'm heading into oils I feel I'm looking forward to being a very loose painter. I have major OCD with drawing, hence the realism, but with painting the whole fluidity of it is so appealing and hoping the loose in me can shine through. I need to loose the stick up my butt I have with graphite and the oils will teach me to find the loose. I'm hoping anyway.

I did both... But the best, for me is somewhere in between. Meaning, that even John Singer Sargent was quite meticulously "tight" when defining the details on the face, especially the eyes and lips. Sometimes he wasn't... Yet I think, his most notable works are when he combined loose with tight. At some point Velázquez was tight too at the beginning of his career, but when he reached perfection was somewhere towards the loose, but always, I am most sure, achieving perfect likeness and character of every of his sitter or model with every stroke of his brush!

This is a good video, great information! I find with landscapes and such I'm much more loose compared to when I'm painting portraits. I just started seriously with portraits this year and I'm finding it challenging to stay loose and not overblend, etc.. I think I'll loosen up with more practice and confidence painting them. Same happened when I first started landscapes - took a while for me to loosen up. So I'm not sure what I am lol :)

Something that has helped me make more confident portraits is to do a study in the same scale before hand. It allows me to work out both the colors and overall difficult areas of a particular face. I also can see which areas can be reduced to a single brush stroke. Another good thing is that I don't have to worry about it being perfect so it takes off a lot of stress. Also, love your videos. Keep up the good work.

I guess that's one reason why doing a smaller quick 'sketch' can sometimes to be helpful too - work out the overall values and colors before jumping straight into the final painting. Thanks for your thoughts and insights. I had kind of forgotten about doing things like that!

I paint tight, highly detailed. I started trying watercolors in an effort to loosen up, but I just wound up doing tight watercolors.

Then don't try to find it. You can work on being less tight but in the end, it's your artistic vision. It's not mandatory to be loose. Be yourself 😊✨

Very tight is tedious but I do it, have done it so I know I am able plus I know it’s a valuable experience to develop my own style. I would like to be pretty tight but know which shadows are extraneous so there is more contrast going on rather than finding all the in between shadows and all. So long as it looks like the person without including all the details ......I think that’s what I would like to be able to do.

Yes, there's a fine line between too tight and too lose, it's mostly a matter of personality in my opinion. It must feel right with you I guess !

@@FlorentFargesarts that’s for sure! Like when you know you’re done kind of thing. I do know I never liked my art classroom stuff as much as I like doing this like my way instead. Mostly my ideas with your help. I’ll be damned surprised if you ever suggest I paint somebody else ( regarding my muse Rory Gallagher) unless I’m complaining of boredom and feeling stale first.....and I’ll probably do it myself then rather than waiting for someone to suggest it. This is nearly perfect way to learn.

I don't think there are 'loose' and 'tight' artists. Just like there are no introverts and extroverts, we're all a bit of both too varying degrees. It all depends on the situation. If you have only 2 to 4 hours to complete a portrait or figure from life, you're probably going to choose the alla prima technique which means loose brushwork because you haven't got much time to make your statement. On the other hand, if you're developping works with a story you might prefer a tigther style to say what you have to say. The most fun for me is to mix both styles, like in the Sargeant painting you showed, the face is definitely tighter than the dress.

Tight vs loose is an approach. It is difficult for a tight oriented painter to loosen up but a loose painter can’t tighten up by not finishing at the point they consider the painting completed. In my view being overly tight is less desirable than being overly loose

It's not if it's your way... But it can be a pain in the rear.... takes a lot of patience and focus, time and steadfastness. So it's only pleasant for those who want it.
