One minute video of a toilet roll value exercise :)
This exercise uses the Munsell value scale to decide on the light and shadow values for the three local values that the stripes on the toilet roll are painted in.
(It doesn't actually have to be a toilet roll, any cylinder you can paint on will do.)
I primed the toilet roll first with gesso primer, mixed the local values to exact Munsell values 7, 5 and 3 and then painted on the stripes. Light and shadow values for each of those were chosen and then the study was painted.
What this teaches you is how the light and shadow values differ for different local values. Plus, it's a great way to use up old toilet rolls!

Oh you did that so well. I always ha e a problem figuring out that top part, the very top, where its concave or hollow. For instance drawing an apple, then shading the dip that goes into where the stem is. Great video though 👌 ❤

When there are different colours, i.e., sky, ground, other objects. Harmonising is tricky.

Absolutely, suitable for edge handling in any painting subject.

Is there really a way to not blend but have the paints naturally blend with each other? Did the great masters blend really as separate step?

7,6,5 5,4,3 3,2,1 Is this how you painted the roll?

No, with a lighter local value, the number of steps between the light and the shadow values is greater. With a low value local, they are closer together. So in the top stripe of hiigher value, there is a greater number of steps between the light and shadow values.
