Mungyo make water soluble oil pastels which might be better than buying their soft oil pastels and using mineral spirits. I blend the oil pastels (not water soluble) with a paper stump. I use Lyra Aquarelle if I want to liquify them.
Satin Glazing Liquid by Golden would have less grit and give the page slight texture, but with a good coloring book like Johanna Basford or Hanna Karlzon or Kerby Rosanes not sure it is really needed. I will have to test it out.
I enjoyed this and wow these pastels pop! My concern is if once blended, will they bleed to the back side of the page? Can you use them on 2 sided coloring book pages? Is mineral spirts the only way to blend it other than friction? Thanks for help!
Thank You!! You can't see them on the back side of the page and yes Mineral spirits or friction. Prima makes a water soluble pastel but i have never liked them as much.
Excellent information on this product. I'm going to try my first background with this same brand and your video was a huge help on what these can do/how they perform. Do you spray your background with a fixative before moving to the subject or does the Gamsol keep the oil pastels from smearing?
I know this is an older video so it might not get seen but I wondered if you can use baby oil instead of gamsol/odorless mineral spirits. And what fixative did you use? Thanks!
Baby oil is composed of Mineral oil which is a colorless, odorless petrochemical derived from crude oil (the same crude oil used to produce gasoline). I personally do not use mineral oil. I do use Gamsol to remove the oils in the oil pastels, which leaves just the pigment. I then spray with a fixative so they won't smear.
I have used oil pastels but not with mineral spirits. I don't like how they still feel greasy on the page after. Does the mineral spirits help with that? Did you spray any fixative on the page after. I like them but have been afraid to use them in my coloring books. Your pages really do look stunning. As for using clear gesso, maybe you watched a video on water soluble oil pastels, they work much better with the gesso.
I do think the mineral spirits help and i do use a final fixative on them after im done with the oil pastels and before i color the rest of the page then they don't transfer or smudge. hope that helps.
