I agree you can't trust Ford or Land Rover recommendations. Thanks for the video. I would like to see an expert independent test. The fact that Ford recommend 5w50 in the supercharged version is the key data point to support your recommendation.

If Ford really cared.... Nailed it. The oil consumption issue should be a recall, not a TSB. Now I have to pay them $190/hr to fix their fuck up. Ford definitely doesn't care. They want more of our money.

6:34 swap that ultra low viscosity fluid every 50,000 miles. DO NOT wait until 150,000 like ford says you can.

My guess is that there are a ton of vehicles that might be better off with a higher viscosity oil. The auto manufactures are up against government regulations for fuel economy and oil waste. That's why the oils are thinner and the oil change intervals are longer. By the way. There isn't a business on the planet that cares about you. It's only about money, and that's the way it's always been.

Maybe I missed it in the video but did the 5w-50 help with the oil consumption?

All 5 of my Ford's call for 5w20 oil and I've always used 5w30 year round without any issues. I personally wouldn't use a 5w50 oil unless the engine was a very high mileage tired unit. This is only my opinion. I do know that many guys are running 5w40 diesel oil in several engines from several manufacturers with good results. I wouldn't run such a thick oil in your cold winter climate. Even though it specifies 5 winter in the oil that doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to flow like a 5w20. In the end it's exactly as you stated, do your own research and see what would work best for you.

5w50 will flow EXACTLY like 5w30 that’s what the w designation is for is for the winter climate flow characteristics

@@jtmartin8445 Not according to all of the cold temperature testing that I've seen. It's always going to flow slower when below freezing temps.

I have a 2013 Lincoln Navigator with the 5.4 3v and they recommend the same crap they did your truck. I upgraded to 5w-30 and seems to be better. Maybe I should upgrade to 5w-40

e85 is not worth the 10 cent savings for 4 mpg less...

I would have gone from 5w20 to 5w30 but to 5w50 seems too high.

0w-40 would have been a good choice. These categories are very lax. At the low end a 0w-40 is thicker than a 5w-30 despite the lower rating. These ratings are not in abslolute terms! A 5w-50 is significantly thicker at the low end than a 5w-30. Good video and a smooth running engine nonetheless.

If that truck has a VVT engine good luck when the cam phasers fail.
@flexairz

Why? 5W has a higher viscosity than the 50. Cold oil is always thicker than warm oil.

Thats funny because they dont fail from the essentially 90 weight oil in -40F temp cold starts like I run mine in. 5w-20 in -40 is molasses.

You guys do know that the first number is the cold temperature and the second number is the operating temperature number?? Not like the old days....

I have the whole stalling at stop lights issue but it has never thrown a code. I was thinking vct solenoids or phasers. Someone recommended me to use 5w50. They said their truck was doing the same thing and they were thinking vct solenoids or phasers but they sitched the oil first. Fixed the stalling issue. They said the oil pressure drops so low that the truck cuts off. Anyone else experienced this being a fix.

I just unplugged the VCT solenoids and it ran quite well for about a month. I had a mechanic put new Motorcraft VCT solenoids and it runs fine

@jeromestephens8385 I switched to 5w40 , because I couldn't get 5w50 locally the day I was doing the oil change. It hasn't stalled on me once . However the idle still jumps around a little bit after driving for a while. But hasn't stalled once in the last 2 weeks.

How often u change ur transmission fluid

I heard from our heavy duty mechanic whom also had to service our service trucks. There are two trains of thought on it. Change it often or run it till she blows since you don’t get the nasty ignition burn in the oil. I ran my 05 truck 165k no problem. Just sold my 6.7 with 175k no problems. With that said I hear with the new 10 speeds you can’t do it. I had a Dodge with 135k on it and took it to my shop class and replaced the filter and changed the fluid and she went out within 25k

You need protection but thickness is decreasing mpg. 5w30 unless you burning oil. Increase percentage of lucas oil stabalizer until blowby stops.. My truck right now 1998 chevrolet c1500 running 5w30 with 310,000 km burns no oil. Tiny percentage of stabalizer.. Drain and fill from the tranny dipstick amsoil ss a couple of times..

And wait til your engine starts knocking and ticking. Those VCTs have small passages that need a thin weight oil to get lubricated. Use the weight the manufacturer recommends
@ClutchMonsta
@ClutchMonsta 3 месяца назад
Ford requires 5w-50 on performance applications of the 5.0 (supercharged). Nothing on the motor is changed other than the supercharger kit. The oil pressure, passages, ports, etc is the same. So the oil obviously flows through the passages fine.

Tell us why the F150 in Europe takes 5W40 and in the US it take 5w20? 5W50 isn't that big of a deal in big hot engines

Ford worries about Ford period! They couldnt build a V-8 that doesn't consume oil. I have a 2018 that still uses oil after the latest TSB as well. The longer dipstick fix is why have purchased my last Ford truck after owning 7 over the last 40 years. They want big money for poor build quality.

I had a 2010 F150 with a 4.6l 3v in an F150 that never used oil, never added an ounce..... Until I had 240k miles on it. Then if suddenly began drinking it, along with the dreaded cam phaser problems.
