Oildale 1-Day Horsemanship Clinic - Morning Session 

It's tricky when you are leaning something new and you're on the spot with an instructor and your horse is trying to learn something new. These riders seem very green.

@@lisaburroughs7847 well guess what? I don't own a horse, but I work with my neighbor's horses on a daily basis. I was able to teach their green horses to do these with ease... so there And update: I have my own horse now, and she didn't know anything about sidepassing, being soft, etc. She had a very rushy trot and would push into the bridle. 3 months later, I can get her to sidepass over logs, and even sidepass in a circle while her front hooves are in a tire. Trot is very smooth and slow, and I can get her to slow down with my seat and voice. I can also maneuver her around objects while going backwards. She can be ridden easily in just a halter as well just hilarious you have the nerve to assume that I wouldn't perform any better if I were at the clinic too. You don't know me, my ability to take instructions, and my ability to train.

it def. is too loose, normally you want it snug enough to have one finger or two between the back and the belly..

That particular horse is a quarter horse/draft cross. We like horses that are built on the hindquarter instead of like many modern quarter horses that are built downhill.

We always ride with spurs for safety sake. If we need to get moving to avoid a wreck, they are our insurance. In horsemanship, they are always there to back up what we ask with our seat and calf. The horse learns not to ignore the rider’s seat and leg because the spur will engage if he does. If you have short legs, you should ride a dropped spur. If you have long legs, you should ride a straight or upturned spur. Use them as a tool, not a weapon.

@@PatnDebPuckett I understand that because I grew up having that drilled in my head( seat of my pants) when I was a little kid. I use a small blunt clover spur when breaking 3 year olds so if things go flying apart no real harm can be done to the horse or me when I come down. I was looking for his likes and kind he uses. I live in Crewe Virginia and his teachings is like my fathers. But as you know I am a long way from your range

Brian Midkiff Pat likes a heavy spur that sits flat on the spur counter of his boot. He has a set of spurs that have fewer points for dull sided horses and another set of spurs that have a lot of points for his bridle horses. Aside from that he likes a spur strap that doesn’t have buckles made out of a light piece of leather that will break if it gets hung up on something. Selecting a set of spurs is something that has to be done with the size of the horse (depth of girth) and the length of the rider’s legs in mind. Right now, Pat uses plain Jeremiah Watt spurs but he had to grind off some of the ornate parts so they would rest flat on his spur counter. I, on the other hand, found a really cool old set of spurs at a gear show in Santa Ynez that are a vulgar display of wealth! But they fit my leg and suit my style. So there you go. We do have horses we can provide students who travel here without their own horses.

A correction bit.

If we want the horse to move his hindquarters, we want to displace our weight so that it’s easier for the horse. Displacing your weight to the fore and hind tells the horse which part of his body you want him to move and allows you to let your leg hang in a more neutral position. Once the horse understands, you can be more subtle with your movements.

@@PatnDebPuckett 👍 I see! Hey, changing the subject, but thanks to you, after watching these parts one and two, I got the tiniest, barest glimpse of having a real horse. Hearing Pat's voice in my head, telling me to "move her hindquarters to the left one step!" We did it!!! This skeleton business works!!!

That was a 13 year old horse that had spent his life in a pasture until recently. The young lady had 3 rides on him. She’s a very talented up and coming horse woman.

@@kidstuff44555 I have a 12 yr old mare that does that also. She is the best trail horse you have ever seen. You could put a 10 year old on her in the mountains and she will never make a mistake.

Pat and Deb, you always do s fantastic job presenting a positive video. Thank you. I just have to say that if I watched that horse, the back cinch, the behavior of a race horse and now to be told it has been out to pasture for 13 years I would not waste another bale of hay on it. Sorry but there always is a new crop of colts coming on.

John Head I guess that’s not your decision to make. This is a young lady trying to learn as much as she can as a horseman. She will no doubt do her practice her trade on a variety of horses. Some will fail and some will be a success. How do you think Pat got all of the experience he has?

I disagree. You don’t know the whole story on the young lady or the horse. The fact that she got in the clinic shows her willingness to learn. I think that we do a lot of judging and we really shouldn’t. We used to be taught that if we didn’t have anything nice to say, we shouldn’t say anything at all. Remember how you were as a teenager and rejoice that this young lady is riding a horse, she is polite, and she isn’t on drugs.
