The Johnson/OMC 5 1/2hp outboards from the 1950s are in the running for the greatest outboards ever made. Smooth, quiet, reliable and fuel efficient, they were and are the "gold standard" for small outboard motors, not just in the 1950s but even today. This series motor started life in 1954 and was constantly upgraded through the final version in 1979. (It is said that OMC literally wore out the tooling!)
This is a 1958 Johnson CD-15 5 1/2 hp that I picked up at a yard sale about 10 years ago for $50. It needed the usual coils, carb kit, fuel lines and impeller but runs just perfectally as you can see in the video.

You say it best, these engines were the "gold standard" of the day. I dare anyone to compare one of these to today's four strokes, every bit as quiet and smooth, doesn't even smoke much using the required 16:1 fuel/oil mix. Miss you Art....

Thanks for the video and the history lesson. I just bought a Johnson 1957 7.5 hp and enjoyed learning some new things about that year. Mike

You really gave a ton of useful, accurate information in that video. I’m working on one of these now and your video was a treat to watch. Thanks

I have a 1961 that lays under a boat in the middle of the bush for most of the year. Its been like that for almost 50 years and it still starts first pull every time.

Wow very nice. My Dad had one on the boat that we grew up with his was a 35 horse.

It is amazing that these engines don't really smoke at all when properly tuned, even at 16:1 mix, she steps out pretty smartly also compared to other similar engines...

Well, you're right - these small motors with the oilite bushings were designed to run SIXTEEN to one, which is why they had a FOUR gallon tank instead of the six that came with the higher-HP models, so you could run a quart to four gallons. BUT, with today's much improved outboard lubricants, you can run 24:1 without much worry. TC-W3 wasn't even a possibility then - we were dumping a quart of 30wt ML spec crankcase oil in the tanks then! A local boat livery outfit burned USED crankcase oil from a nearby service station in their rental motors!
@fleetwin1
@fleetwin1 2 года назад
@@russg1801 I wouldn't run them at 24:1, regardless of oil improvements..

I had a 5.5 in the late 50’s. In 63 in gave up on Johnson for the Tower of Power. 🤠

Who doesn't love 1958 ? I would say that was a terrific year... As far as the motor, it's great to see an oldie like that sounding smooth and doing exactly what it was made to do ....

That's a great running motor. Even at full throttle it's quiet. Oh, wait, my sound was turned off...there, now I can hear it. Still quiet though! ;-)

SWEET RUNNER These motors are over 60 years old but are still far superior in quality compared to anything made in china

Only problem with the 1950's OMC motors is they use a lot of oil so your conscience may bother you. Nineteen sixty-two and up they had full needle bearings and run 50:1. The later powerhead can probably be concealed under the classic clamshell cover, and you'd have the advantage of the single-line hose. Since they run rich on oil, they won't necessarily "idle smooth" if you let it load up. If you have a bigger boat, go with this motor's Big Brother - the 18. I have that same year's 18 and it will run 50:1 today since the bigger motors had needle bearings not bronze bushings.

Did you ever do videos on a 15 horse seahorse that was driven and the Clipper style boats.... it wasn't done by the hand like where you sit in the back of the boat steering wheel and pulleys and the gear shifters to the right

I consider it a MUST to use a 16:1 ratio on the 5 1/2 and 7 1/2 OMC motors from this era. (8oz oil per gallon of gas) These motors have bushings throughout so oil not only lubricates but acts as a seal. I only use TCW-3 from my Evinrude/Johnson dealer, Mercury or Yamaha is fine too - I avoid oils from discount stores. For my complete thoughts on 2-cycle oil and outboard motors visit my oddjobmotors website and see Tech Tip #5 2-Cycle Oil And You! It's under the outboard pull-down menu.

outboardsrus I have been into 1950s stuff sincerely I was a kid and along with fishing, I have finally acquired a Swan 12' aluminum boat that I have no idea what year it is but I am guessing by the style of it, it is late 1950s it also came with a 8" spindle mount wheel boat trailer, I have no problem restoring any of this stuff but my question is what size and brand engine would you recommend, I was figuring a Johnson from the mid 1950s (because they seem to be relatively cheaply priced and abundant on Craigslist here in California) but my questions are where do I get normal repair parts and I noticed you mentioned coils as I hers have where do I get those, points and carb rebuild kits. I am a weirdo and I plan to tow this behind my 1960 Dodge pickup and use it in both saltwater and freshwater. I am realizing here is a slight learning curve here but My experience in cars I am pretty sure I can manage all of it I just could use a little guidance.

i have the exact same engine here in the Netherlands. I can't get it to start or run with the choke closed. I can only use the motor with the choke pulled open. do you have any idea how to fix this?

alexsarkol86 simple carb clean it sounds like.
@russg1801
@russg1801 6 лет назад
Well, your carburetor is running way too lean at the low speed end. Choke OUT is closed; choke rod IN is OPEN. You need to clean your carb or open the needle but in the last three years I'm sure you figured that out!

@Russ G & @North Houston. I haven't used it in 3 years 😀. Just started thinking about it since my vacation is comming up. I'm definitely going to do what you 2 said once I have figured out what it means :) But hey RU-vid is the best teaching tool for me so I'll start on it this weekend. Thanks for the replies!
